Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is finally here, meaning we now have the chance to officially play over a dozen TMNT games from the eight and 16-bit era—most of which never saw a re-release! But how did this compilation come together, and what are the specific quirks of the many, many turtle-based games it contains? On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Henry Gilbert, and Digital Eclipse's Chris Kohler for an inside look at how the ooze is made.

This episode is sponsored by Konami, who provided us with pre-release copies of TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection.

Just discovered the podcast in 2025. Such a wonderful time.

Even though it's a sponsored episode, everyone's enthusiasm is obviously genuine. Cheers! Now if Konami would only release a Parodius compilation...

I told myself I needed to choose between this one and Shredder's Revenge. Well that was just ridiculous. Obviously I need both! I need to experience all of these amazing special features that were so carefully thought through and executed!

I was late to the SNES party, so I was one of those kids who got TMNT: The Manhattan Project. It was awesome and I still have fond memories of it. The game just felt cinematic in ways that most NES games didn't. Even TMNT 2 couldn't compare.

Lovely podcast guys, and I am so glad that Manhattan Project is getting the love it deserves. When it came out way back when I was very young and it left a big impression on me when I played it. I remember really defending it back in the day when Turtles in Time came out and it had those shiny graphics. I just thought it was more fun to play, and it really was depressing when my friends and critic really tore into it. I mean it's an amazing game, that yeah, sadly did not quite get it's day because of the time of it's release.

TeamVenom

Incredible how much work they put into putting this collection together.

Jamie McAfee

The collection sounds like the new gold standard for reissuing old games. I am excited to check it out.

Jefklak

You guys are convincing me, I'm getting it! BTW I miss the sound track insert enumeration...

Mike Mariano

I can’t believe this worked on me and I bought a copy this evening. I miss those turtles! Though my dedication is not as great as Henry's and I only saw the third movie once in the theatre.

I definitely recall that same "Childhood is ending" feeling by the time Tournament Fighters came out. I was 7 when TMNT first came out, and 13 when that game released, so I was already mostly done with the franchise aside from the games which were still fun. I think we rented the 3rd movie as a curiosity and I was just like "Yeah... this sucks" Anyway, Raphael 4 Life

Love these collections, most of all for the archive material included. The SNK 40th and the Street Fighter 30th are worth getting just for the bonus stuff alone. Since I was a bit older when TMNT came out, I started with the Kevin Eastman version and my early teenage self was initially appalled when it became 'less edgy' for kids. Eventually I got over it and went and saw the first film with a bunch of dummies from my school.

Such a great episode and I’m happy you guys get to experience Manhattan Project! I’m a little younger than you guys and admittedly I never owned it but I rented it all the time from the video store back in the day and your description of it as kind of a hidden gem is very accurate. Also shout out Key West! 😁

Matt Hayden

Great episode! I’m gonna be *that* guy and say that it was Groundchuck, not Dirtbag, who tears the pipe off the wall when fighting you 😅

BlueWeaselBreath

Agreed, this compilation is a true labor of love, really remarkable. I wonder if at any point they considered putting the PC game Manhattan Missions on there. It’s the only thing missing, and it’s so weird, I understand why it didn’t make the cut.

I have a 6 hour flight next week and because of this episode I decided to get the game on Switch so I can play it with my girlfriend on the plane ride, so your advertising definitely works on me.
