Here's a shocking fact for you: Since we started this crazy ride back in 2013, we've released 500 full-length podcasts. (And a whole bunch of other stuff on top of that.) It's been quite a wild ride since we started our independent run, and we've had our share of ups, downs, and global pandemics over the last near decade. So instead of turning the spotlight on a video game topic, on this very special episode, it's time to learn a little something about... ourselves. Now take a seat with Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Stuart Gipp, Diamond Feit, and Nadia Oxford as we discuss the past, present, and future of the little retro gaming podcast that simply can't be stopped.

Very shocking, in the best possible way. Congratulations to all of you Retronauts!

Diamond Feit

"500 to go"?? Nah, I've got more to say than that.

Terry Roc

Great memories of my favorite video game podcast! In the very well done illustration of this episode, which character is the arm bladed one?

Joseph Tavano

Wow congrats Retronauts! It makes me very happy that the first podcast I ever listened to in 2007 is still going. Never stop!

Kormakur Gardarsson

Been a listener since the first episode back on 1UP and to this very day. It was written in the stars, The Kickstarter even launched on my 30th birthday! Here’s to another 500! The best podcast around.

Jason Williams

Congratulations on 500 episodes of the independent run. I still have fond memories of the original Retronauts video roundtable special from 1Up and the weekly show became my first regular podcast listen because it was the first to feature in-depth discussion of retro gaming. Glad you’re still going strong and here’s to the next 500 episodes.

Julian

What a fantastic episode and what a great group of hosts — long live Retronauts!

Clayton McEvoy

Retronauts has so many truly great hosts that I can't pick a favorite anymore. Every time I would hear a new one, I would groan and wish it was Bob or Jeremy... Now I love Diamond, Nadia, and yes... Even Stu. Stu for Christ sake! Stu is now my mom's favorite as well. She loves when he talks about how weak he is and about how children can beat him up. Props and congrats to Retronauts crew.

The Pokemon Holiday Christmas Bash is legendary. It's still the one episode of Retronauts my daughter and I have listened to together and we still quote it to this day.

Congrats all. I agree with Bob, I would like to see more deep-dives into individual games. I like the Kirby series that's still going on because you all are taking a long time with each game.

Keith Huston

So many great memories, thanks for everything ❤️

Jared Blankenship

Congratulations everyone! Keep on trucking and best of wishes and luck!

Hope Bob drops that Majora's Mask ep!

Speaking of Stephen King, there's a reference to that Pokemon reference to Stand By Me in the game Omori where at the very beginning there's a tv that you can interact with and when you do it says "There's a movie on TV. Four boys are walking on railroad tracks." So a reference to a reference to a reference all relating back to Stephen King.

I was a Sierra kid as much as I was a Nintendo kid so I would love a Quest series at some point.

Guybrush

I have no personal nostalgia with Sierra, but I've played through KQVI in recent years, and they 80% hold up surprisingly well, and the other 20% can be mostly smoothed over with save states and walkthroughs at hand. But I can't blame anyone who gets frustrated by the dead ends and navigational annoyances.

Totally off the wall question unrelated to retro games, but Nadia's question about Stephen King in Japan reminded me of a long standing question I've had, which may be addressed by various Japanophiles affiliated with Retronauts. Is Yukio Mishima (calling him a controversial post-WWII Japanese writer would be a slight understatement) popular or well known in Japan? Do people in Japan actually read his books? How is he generally perceived by contemporary Japanese? I have no expectation of an answer, but I would be ecstatic if someone had some on the ground insight to share.

GREAT EPISODE - question, could anyone here ID the interstitial music? They were some great remixes, would love to know the artist.

Jefklak

Can't believe you're doing better than 1UP. W00t.

Shadowmask

I'd love to see an episode on fan translations, especially the ones you all have played

This house is a Stuart Gipp house. Here’s to 500 more!
