As the console wars heated up, Nintendo needed something big that wouldn't necessarily involve investing in new hardware that could potentially wreck the company. And that "something" arrived in the form of Donkey Kong Country, a fairly simple platformer by the technical wizards at Rare that nonetheless impressed millions with its newfangled pre-rendered graphics. This week on Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Stuart Gipp, Diamond Feit, and Henry Gilbert as the crew works up a mighty hunger for bananas and discusses the finer points of those damn, dirty apes.

I was crazy for those pre-rendered graphics in the latter half of the SNES lifespan. Super Mario RPG, Killer instinct. And yeah, definitely intended for best looks on a CRT!

Before I even listen to this thing I have to STAN for DKC - The game is unrivalled. The pacing of the platforming, the one-and-done level mechanics, the moody visuals and sound. A lot of people seem to prefer DKC2 but to me it's more cartoony in visuals and sound, whereas DKC is a mysterious island world that is perfect. (Natural bias, it helps that I only had access to the two OBJECTIVELY BEST SNES games as a kid - DKC and Yoshis Island) Now to listen to the episode and work out what stronger opinions I need to shout at whomever....

I honestly thought Stuart looked like Steven Merchant.

Loved the episode. I never thought much of it, but now I see the original DKC is the inferior game to the sequel. David Wise is one of my all time favorite composers.

I never played DKC much now or then, but the way you're describing the momentum and hit detection is giving me some real Bubsy (yuck) vibes.

Huh, I never knew DKC was considered a difficult game! I'm biased, given it was That Game from my childhood that I played to death and could complete in my sleep. For that same reason I love the physics and controls in the game and see no flaws, except perhaps the frog and ostrich collision detection. DKC Returns is spoiled for me because the movement and physics all just feel slightly off to me which is a bloody shame because I know how lauded the games are!

Maybe the rumor was around before, but this is where I first remember first hearing about Miyamoto hating DKC. Author Steven L. Kent literally claiming in this episode of G4 Icons that he was interviewing Tim Stamper and Miyamoto together and Miyamoto was bashing the game during the interview. Smells like total BS to me by a guy trying to sell some books: Go to 13:56: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGAbAxNcSoM

Man, I remember getting the VHS preview/making of video in the mail for this because I had a Nintendo Power subscription. Watched it God knows how many times. My neighbor had a paper route at the time, and we went down to the Kmart near us to grab Donkey Kong Country. Blew us away actually playing it.

You'll never be more wrong about anything than preferring SNES Aladdin. The Genesis game is a 1993 perfect presentation of the movie as a video game. The SNES game could be about anything. You all really need more people who grew up with Sega in your network. It continues to be a blindspot.

I had to go and check and it IS possible to 100% this game under an hour. The record is 44m 48s according to speedrun.com. Also the Genesis Aladdin is clearly better. Happy holidays!

DKC had several high quality sequels, while the Yoshi series fell off hard after the first game. I’d say Donkey Kong ended up winning that non-existent battle.

I never knew they got David Wise to do the DKC3 soundtrack on GBA. One more reason Nintendo needs to bring that to NSO. I tried to replay DKC recently and just found it kind of boring. Rolling and jumping everywhere gets old after awhile. Didn't Stu say something about hitting 105% on the save file? I can't find anything about that, just that you can hit 101% if you find all the bonus stages.

146:30 whoope would have made it work.

I’m with Stu here. Granted I grew up with this game but honestly this isn’t a challenging platformer. I still think it’s a bit of a masterpiece and holds up in gameplay better than the sequels. DKC1 for the atmosphere, gameplay, and overall world consistency, DKC2 for the music and visuals.
