Oh holy lord. You know, I (Stuart Gipp, hullo) knew that my hobby horse obsessions would eventually become part of Retronauts, but who knew that I’d get around to retro compilations this soon? Indeed, I sat down (virtually) with my good pal Lewis Clark of SegaDriven.com to sort the Taito Legends from the Capcom Generations from the Namco Museums, with a good bit of Sonic along the way.

It makes sense to me that an episode about compilations should itself be sort of a compilation, so the other half of this episode is an interview with Digital Eclipse’s Mike Mika and Chris Kohler about their work on all manner of fantastic comps, but with a particular focus on the monumentally brilliant Atari 50. Forgive the fact that I get a little fanboyish on this one, but Atari 50 and DE’s work really is that exciting!

There remain many more fascinating compilations to cover, so this subject is likely to make a return visit at some point. Why not sound off in the comments about which retro compilations you’ve enjoyed the most over the years? I promise to read at least one of them.

Love me some Retrogipps.

A fantastic followup to the original Retro Compilations episode (#15 from wayyy back in the 2014 Kickstarter-funded Vol. III run, if you're curious), and another excellent Stuart-produced Retronauts! Looking forward to another great year of retro gaming discussion from my favorite 'casters of pods.

I joined my local pinball league last season. I’ve been playing for 5 years or so, and it’s the first time I’ve ever really competed. I’m beyond hooked. Love the pinball talk every time y’all bring it up

Great stuff. There's something about playing old arcade games on the PS2 through a projector onto a brick wall that just feels right.

I'm a big fan of Major Havoc also, and I've always wondered: Is it the first game where you can play a mini-game while the game loads? Does it even qualify as loading? How was Namco's patent never challenged?

I still have the Midway Arcade Treasures collection for GameCube and I remember it had some cool interviews and stuff on it. It walked so Atari 50 could run!

Fun episode. I too find myself drawn to Retro compilations. Interesting to think that many retro compilations are retro themselves.

Great job on the interview with the creators of Atari 50!!!

Great episode here, I was on the fence but have now been thoroughly flung on the side of “I need to buy Atari 50 immediately.” Thank you!
