After the initial trilogy, Ace Attorney took some find to find itself once the book was seemingly closed on Phoenix Wright. From spinoffs to crossovers to soft reboots featuring new characters, Capcom's beloved adventure game series went through some ups and downs before returning to the steady level of quality we've come to expect. On this weeks episode, join Bob Mackey, Nina Matsumoto, and Maddie Copp as the crew explores just where Ace Attorney has been in the 15 years since its first finale.

What I remember about AA5 is that Athena just shows up at the beginning as a Poochie as someone you've never heard of but everyone's in love with. Then you only get her backstory in like, the last case. That's a common problem with Japanese mysteries, where they can't show any of the good stuff until after you've seen the twist; Danganronpa 2 ended up with the whole plot stuffed into the epilogue because of it. I don't even know what was going on with the game main villain though. It was like they wanted to build up a multi-game plot then just gave up. …I stopped playing AA6 in the first case because the names were sorta kinda racist and everyone was constantly threatening to execute me.

What timing, I just listened to the Retronauts Micro on Ace Attorney yesterday.

One thing that has bothered me in all the 3D entries (and it's especially bad in AA5) is that the character animations are too slow, which adds an extra second or two between every dialog box. It makes them feel a lot more sluggish.

Was Nina involved in that keychain set? That's an absolutely beautiful item.

Great timing! Your podcast on the original trilogy inspired me to play ace attorney and yesterday I completed the final game I had yet to play. What an amazing series!

Can't escape Father Brown. My parents are obsessed with the long running recent BBC series and the current series is on now...

Every time y’all said “the Apollo Justice Trilogy” my poor, tinnitus-ridden ears interpreted it as “the Apologist’s Trilogy”

I am going to defend the Perceive system by reminding everyone that Apollo's bracelet is not magic, it's just a tight fitting bracelet! It feels tighter because Apollo subconsciously tenses up when he notices someone's body language change and the bracelet helps him notice when he's doing so. I think the writing behind the ability pairs well with two of the running narratives in the game, stage magic (seems like it's a mystical thing but it's really not) and poker/card games (where reading body language of your opponent is important).

This ep has inspired me to finally finish the Great duology. I also really want to know how many meetings it took for the English loc team to walk away from naming him Suzaku Raito.
