Stuart:Look, we’re three parts deep into what has ended up being five. You cannot claim that we did not go deep and hard on Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sorry for saying “deep and hard”, it implies that we experienced the game sexually, which I am sure is not true of my esteemed guests. I myself refuse to confirm or deny that such an event took place. What am I even typing at this point? To quote the icon of cinema known as The Mask, somebody stop me. Smoking!

Seriously – we love this game and I expect that’s quite clear from the effusive treatment we have given it. And yet, you must understand that we are approaching the game from a critical perspective as well as a gushing one; where we feel it makes any kind of misstep, we’ve tried to highlight it. But the goal of this series was always the kind of forensic examination of a single game that I’ve always, always wanted to do. It has been personally very fulfilling to produce this kind of analysis and I truly hope that our surely irrepressible chemistry makes it an entertaining journey.

There will be two more parts, hopefully in short order! But in the meantime, enjoy this middle chunk. Am I planning another deep dive once it’s over? Naturally. I have some other Sonic episodes already recorded, but they’re breezier single-show jobs. Look forward to those! And let me know what you thought of this episode in the comments section. Which is located…

I always thought I hated Sonic, but I just had never played Sonic 3. I didn't care for the first two games as a kid and never got much further into the series, but I've gotten into it with these podcasts and I'm blown away by the design of 3. They not only fix most of the issues I had with the first two games, in some respects, they figured out how to turn some of those weaknesses into strengths. Sonic's speed is no longer a hindrance to exploration because some of the game's zones are so massive that they are intimidating even by 2024 standards. They make clever use of this space by providing alternative paths of exploration that often reveal themselves only once you feel like you've failed and are presumably falling to your doom. This makes memorization of what is to come both more and less important than previous games, depending on your own personal goals. It may be one of the earliest examples of a game dynamically allowing a player to choose their own difficulty in real time without necessarily realizing that is what's happening. It's a brilliant game, and once again, I must thank team Retronauts Europe for curing my American ignorance.

Without looking it up, I believe the current reigning king of the ring is baron corbin. I hope someone proves me wrong.

As a big s3&k fan, I absolutely love these episodes. No idea if they work for anyone else, but I'm thrilled there here for me.

I'll up my subscription tier to get a Fat Worm Blows a Sparky podcast.

Launch Base is nuts. The color palette is insane. The glass shattering in the song. One of the best stages ever. Mushroom Hill is just there for me to farm emeralds. No real love for it. Please do this same treatment for Sonic 1 & 2.
