Did you know there's a new Final Fantasy game out? (No, not Final Fantasy VII Rebirth—but good guess!) This past summer, the latest mainline Final Fantasy released to near-universal critical acclaim, but seemingly not a whole lot of enthusiasm from fans. So is this stunning spectacle in an Ivailce-style world worth the 60 hour (and 70-dollar) investment? On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Will Hughes, and Corey Plante as the crew discusses how this latest entry looks to the future while still being slightly stuck in the past.

Maybe it is a great episode, but I'm not interested in listening. I come to Retronauts to avoid current game discourse. I’ll look forward to the next one.

I for one like it when Retronauts tackles new games as they tend to do it from a different perspective than most gaming outlets

Are there spoilers? I have this on my "to do" list but haven't gotten to it yet

I also completely forgot this game even came out. But maybe it was hard to find guests for this episode because this isn't a game for Final Fantasy fans, is not a Final Fantasy game, its a game for people who, for whatever reason, like the kind of stuff that Team Ninja and PlatinumGames makes and for many of us, those types of games hold absolutely no appeal whatsoever, I'm not even sure I'd bother to pick this game up for $10 or $20, the gameplay and demo was really that terrible and off putting. I'm not an MMO fan, but I dabbled in FFXI and XIV and can appreciate them for what they are, but FFXVI is the first one I don't see myself ever playing due entirely to the terrible gameplay.

I really liked FF16, probably a lot more then this crew does, but I really enjoyed the thoughtful critique on this episode compared to what I hear about the game elsewhere which largely sums up to "they changed it, now it sucks". It's also forced me to put words to a feeling I've had since finishing the game, a feeling that might get me beat up on the internet's playground, and a comparison I must make considering both games end in a place called "Origin" where Harry Lloyd waxes philosophically about the meaning of life before kicking my butt. Most things FF16 tries to do gameplay-wise, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 does better. Most things XC3 tries to do narrative-wise, FF16 does better. I hope none of you know where I live.

I wanted to like FF16 but by trying to mix the RPG and character action genres it became unsatisfying iteration of each. At no point did I feel I needed to do anything beyond equip the latest armor and pours AP into whatever moves I had equipped. Boss fights consisted of dodging the boss' telegraphed moves then counterattacking. The game never truly tested my skill or forced me to change tactics. Graphically it looked nice but the drab world had me yearning for some color.

This is the first final fantasy my wife played since X she loves it, wants the soundtrack and the art book. Watching the game was quite a spectacle.. and for some reason she just never got that chocobo haha. I'll be excited to play through it right after Y's, octopath and Nier Automata...one of these years

I think the main problem with the game is that its length adds to its depressing nature. In most games, the stuff you do makes the world a better place. In FFXVI, almost everything you do either makes things worse or just temporarily stops it from getting worse. Which I think is fine for a 20 hour game or if it was a weekly show I could take a mental break from. But as a human with feelings and empathy, I just was dreading playing the game at some point, because it was just too much emotionally. And I do think that speaks to the strengths of the story in that I wanted these characters to succeed in their mission, but I also maybe need a minigame or two to get my mind off of the enormity of the situation for a bit. Which, as alluded to on the podcast, is why FFVII Rebirth has been so fun to play!

Thanks y'all, enjoyed an episode on a new entry for an old series you've been covering for years. I am on the "it was good" side of FFXVI.

I really like (most of) FFXVI, but I can't fault this superb, thoughtful analysis. I'm not really good at action games so I may be more forgiving of the limitations of the battle system than some but I found myself nodding with agreement at every comment. As Bob implied, this is almost a reverse FF15- that was a chaotic pile of jank that somehow won me over; this was ultra-polished with the most (comparatively!) coherent FF plot in yonks but sometimes threatened to push me away.
