While we wait for me to prepare the usual monthly poll, there is something I wanted to ask everyone. Actually I have several questions, but they probably wouldn't fit a single post. XD Anyway, these are more generic questions, targeted to everyone who support me, and aren't meant to necessarily affect short-term development. Still, I'd like to know what people think about those, either to maybe fix what I have already done, or at least take care of it in future projects.

I figured I'd start with something simple, that is under everyone's eyes most of the time: maps! Some of the stuff I have been doing recently made me consider a few things, and I wanted to know what people thought about them, and if they are happy with how the maps look and feel (in general). Anyway, I might have more questions about the state of the Patreon and if you are happy/unhappy with how things are going, but I decided to start with something not as (potentially) boring.

Anyway, the choices below should be easy to understand, and ask about your preferences for the maps, to get an idea on where we stand on that part of the game, and if I should try to improve them and in what ways.

As I said before, these aren't necessarily meant to be instantly acted upon, it's more for me to get an idea of how well this area of the game is doing.

Every map you've done so far is nice. Interiors are interesting and unique (One of the worst annoyances for me is to load into the game I haven't played a couple days and not being able to tell where I am and what I was about to do, which isn't the case here and I am grateful) and exteriors are.. just right, I guess. I like to explore areas made for exploration but other than that, for "standard RPGing, I prefer small maps, because I don't consider running around for hours to be particularly fun. Again, Caliross is fine. Even the "back and forth" quests usually don't take more than a couple screens. So I voted "It's fine" while also voting for the areas to explore.

I'm pleased with the maps, its organized but with an open concept that makes in easy to remember and less cramped.

Maps are fine, and cities should only be added if there's a clear concept for them. I would say that expanding the existing ones and adding NPCs where warranted would be a better option because IMO depth beats width every time. A dense city with multiple potentially interacting storylines sounds a lot more fun than a series of shallow city shaped themeparks. Save that for one-off locations like temples and other wilderness "dungeons."

In general, I like how you put your maps together. Every screen has some sort of distinguishing feature. I like the way you've got your cities set up. They feel lively, for the most part, and feel distinct, however, I feel aspects could use some fleshing out. For example, the slums could use some expaning or more, and darker content befitting of a part of the city fraught with thugs, prostitution and dark cults. In regards to NPCs, I'm of the school where everything you put in your game should serve some purpose. When it comes to NPCs, if they aren't quest givers, they should either expand on the lore, or provide life to the world, in that hierarchy of importance (again, in my humble opinion). NPCs with nothing important to say should be a rarity. Finally, in regards to exploration, while I do like to explore, I like the exploration to be meaningful. There are too many games that call running through huge expanses of nothing (open fields with nothing of value, no encounters, nothing worth seeing) and call that exploration, when in reality it's just a waste of time worse than watching rerun tv. This is not something I've noticed in your game, for which I am immensely impressed and duely content to continue contributing money to

I did try my best to make navigation easy. Splitting the maps into small screens was my attempt at having the maps work more like a series of rooms, making it easier to learn which area connects to the next (almost as if it's a straight line), although I do wonder if I shouldn't reduce the number of "open" borders each screen has, or improve the amount of details, or even "fuse" some of the current maps, to slightly reduce the number of transitions. The smaller a screen is, the harder it is to have details added to it. I think we should get some mountain ranges and other open, explorable areas, possibly with some secrets in them (the second temple's mountain will feature some more places, in the future, and I'd like to either expand the current forest, or add another one).

I am glad things have worked more or less how I wanted them to. Since I make the game start in the largest city in the game, I felt like it needed to be easy to navigate around, and having it delivered in small bites probably helped a lot.

If we add cities/villages, we will eventually do it to have at least some quests/content in there, I wouldn't like completely empty fields either. The only "real" problem is that having some diversified locations can be useful for certain stories (for example, a village which is getting attacked by orcs should be in a new location, away from any main city and defensive force, in order for their request of help to make sense), so there is always a need for some areas which are off the beaten path, even if they don't contribute much to the overall situation.

Tarkas isn't finished yet, and there are plans to eventually expand the slums (and add the noble district as well), it's just been a little hard to find the time, and I felt like the game needed some more far away locations as well. I do try to make the non-important NPCs give some info about the world, or be humorous (some of them comment on politics or guild relationships), but I probably have too many stand-ins in pubs and inns, I should make them have more to say. I think we can avoid having maps being large for the sake of it. I hate really large maps where you need to waste a minute just to get to the neighbour next door, or completely empty caves. I think caves are perfect to have secret passages, shortcuts and secrets, but I don't like empty labyrinths. I mean, I already feel like the "slime forest" should have a few more things to it. There is something planned already, but I am trying to consider what could make exploring it during the day a more fun experience. I was even considering adding a fishing minigame (a simple one), so I could have all outdoors area have something that ties them together and encourages esploration, or something useful to gather and collect (similar to the health amulets) that could make sense in a natural environment (beyond mana crystals). I think once I add some "monster camps" in the world, this will all come together (as it will be easier to have challenges in remote areas), and I will probably use more puzzles around the world to uncover new secrets, it should all be fun, hopefully. :)
