I have more art to show, but first, I have a question about this specific piece, so I'll leave the rest for another post in the future. Forgive the low quality of some parts (especially the tattoos) due to how GIMP optimizes stuff for gifs.

Now, this tries to show most/all the customization available for Celeste from this angle (I might add a couple of variations for the piercings, or swap one tattoo for a different one, but this gives a pretty good idea of the scope).

I think her session in the VR room looks pretty nice, but this makes one commission take the time and money of two. That would be a drastic reduction for the number of sex scenes with Celeste (non-sexy commissions and scenes without Celeste wouldn't take more time, of course).

The largest time sink are the 3 different breast sizes, and without these I might get away with paying a little extra and keep all the other customization (tattoos, hair colors, piercings), but I want to know how much people like this stuff.

Of course, we can always "cheat" a little, and make certain customization part of certain paths (so we only get them temporarily or for extended bad ends, circumventing the need to have the extra work for all the scenes), but ideally I'd like to have the feature included in all the scenes. At the same time, it's a significant restriction, so I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts and ideas about customization for Celeste, In light of what I just shared.

The gif almost makes it look like a BE scene (and an erotic at that..). Bigger is better, my friend!

So another game that I patron supports multiple varying breast sizes that can be changed throughout the game. The entire process took a lot of time to implement and no matter what was decided on there was always a portion of the patrons that were not satisfied. Although I think it is a pretty cool idea to have them, I think spending the funds on other customization would both be faster and provide a deeper level of customization than a few different sizes of breasts. Tying them to different "paths" as you mentioned would be a happy medium if people really want them.

mdqp

Yeah, it's demanding for the art production, especially if it's a 2D game like mine. In theory, we can also cheat in a different way, like I did in Caliross (we get the different sizes, but we don't feature them in the scenes, for the most part), or I can also try to investigate other possibilities (reduce the breast sizes to just "normal" and "large", drop a few tattoos variations), and see how much I can ease the workload for my artist. Hopefully we get a nice discussion going in the comments, it's important to decide early on this, so I can design the game accordingly. :)

mdqp

You have no idea how much I agree with "bigger is better"! XD XD XD

I think the best way to cut down on the required variation is to poll people to come up with packages of changes that go together (probably with a google forms or something so you can correlate people's answers). If there's 85% overlap between people who'd want to give Celeste a nose piercing and those who'd want a navel piercing, for example, make those a package deal that always go together.

EngelsPringles

I think no matter what is decided on, it is important to stick to it. That other project decided to make big changes related to art after 2 years into development and it resulted in an entire year overhaul that not everyone is even sold on. It resulted in a small exodus of supporters that were eventually replaced by supporters that wanted completely different things from the original scope of the game. Things are finally settling down but it was a nightmare for awhile.

Onedrift

I think having multiple breast sizes planned from the outset is the best way to go about this kind of customization. I like seeing the character be changed through choices, etc. But the bigger point, which Engels kinda raised, is that once you commit to a development path, stick with it.

Pharum

While I of course want as much customization as possible to show in the scenes I don't think it would be worth it if there is a drastic reduction of art for said scenes. For me, having the accurate hair color and tattoos/piercings show up would be more important than breast size. I'm not sure how much taking the breast options down from 3 to 2 would help but that could be a good compromise. The idea to have them be in specific paths may also work as a way to do it but I feel if you were going to go that route you may as well try to do it for the whole/majority of the game. Just my two cents, I do think you should run a poll afterwards as well. Big fan of TOTDC and can't wait for more.

Pharum

P.S. Love the way this scene came out!

My take is that I don't care about all the variation in the slightest and wouldn't mind at all if there was just a single variant. I also don't care for massive boobs or BE, and prefer the smallest version seen in the gif. If the choice is between illustrating twice as many scenes or adding minor variations I am 100% on the side of twice the illustrations. This might be because I consider the writing/setup to be the main event, with the illustrations being spice, and you don't need to spice your spices.

Ken

Personally I like the visual changes to the main character are relected in scenes. I don't perticularly care whetther I have chosen the specifics so for things like tattoes and piercings you could perhapst just have none -> some -> lots without giving the option to choose which tattoos or piercings.

mdqp

Glad you like the scene and thanks for letting me know your thoughts. I might run a poll if I narrow it down to a few specific choices, but for now I am hoping to hear how people like the art, what they think overall and if they have any ideas.

mdqp

Yeah, I want to pick an option now and then run with it. I am hoping to get a better idea on how much people want detailed customization overall, if they share my same doubts on restricting the number of scenes per month if we kept the full list of customization, any ideas they might have to sidestep the dilemma and so on.

mdqp

We might get a poll in the future (if I narrow things down to a few solid choices), but for now I hope to get feedback on the look, if I shouldn't even think about reducing this much the number of commissions per month, and what are possible thoughts and ideas on the situation. I will also talk more with my artist to figure out if we can trim the choices down without butchering the options.

mdqp

I see. I don't think we'd ever have to give up all customization, but it's important to know that some place little to no priority to the feature.

mdqp

Yeah, I figure the visual changes are something lot of people like to see (as I do), which is why I wanted to try this out as soon as I had a good grasp on the number of customizations I wanted for this "test run". Reducing the number of tattoos variations is definitely an option, maybe that and using only one breast size might be enough to containt the amount of work required, but I'll have to ask about it to my artist, or maybe run another test.

Dyamonde

i like the variation in bodily features like Haircolor and Breastsize, but can definitely do without Tattoos or Piercings.

Madking2

All the customizations are really cool, but when it comes down to it, isn't totdc more about how Celeste tries to resist getting her mind bent to others will, not her already super hot body? More variation in the story lines, and more story lines that happen because she gets sucked down the path to depravity, that's what I'm here for. That being said, that gif of all the options is super hot, and I love the biggest breast size a lot, so I would be quite happy with slower development that had all the features available.

Scars Unseen

My opinion is that the best part of TotDC is the battle (or lack thereof depending on your play style) for her mind, so I could do without the physical changes altogether except possibly for bad ends. Minor stuff that doesn't put you back too much financially like tats, piercings and hair colors? Sure. Actual physical alteration? Not worth it if it means less content overall. And if we're talking preferences, the smallest size breasts in this pic is plenty large already. EDIT: Though one idea I got from the art presented here. It might be interesting to restrict major physical changes to her avatar IN virtual reality. It would go along with the core theme of changing her mental outlook while restricting the areas you would need art variations of that nature.

mdqp

I see. Hair color is one of the easiest ones to keep, so it shouldn't go anywhere no matter what. Breastsizes are the one which take the most time, currently, so I wonder if I could simplify it to just 2 sizes instead of 3 (something I am going to ask to my artist soon). I figure tattoos could be reduced in number as well, in theory.

mdqp

Thanks for letting me know. It's true that the main hook are the mental changes and whatnot, but I wanted to have some customization, now that I am not working with real pictures (plus, I confess that I find the idea of Celeste getting mind controlled or nudged into a bigger size to be really hot XD).

mdqp

The core idea is the same in TOTDC 2 (so the mental struggle is king), and most of the changes would be at player's discretion, but I must admit I like physical changes based on suggestions or mind control, plus customization has its own appeal, which is why I wanted to try, now that I have the opportunity. I'll see if a compromise like reducing the number of breast sizes from 3 to 2 and some other cuts could keep the workload under control. There are some plans for VR shenanigans as well as temporary body swaps (the way it was briefly touched on in TOTDC 1), and perhaps temporary gene mods and holograms, so we should have as many temporary changes as we want. The main issues usually come with permanent, broad mixes of possibilities that must all be accounted for (like in the example scene), but everything temporary with a fixed set of changes is fair game, and should be cool to mess around with.

Maeve

I love it! I want that VR Room. I think the going to just two sizes on bust would make good sense. I suspect the tattoos/hair colors/piercings all aren't really big time sinks in terms of making the art... but that's a lot of options and while getting to pick some things is nice it isn't like I'd go back through to see the game again with different ink unless it's a really game-changing thing.

mdqp

Yeah, I wonder how many people would find it a big deal to go from 4 types of tattoos per area vs 2. The big time sinks are the bust changes, so I hope I'll get a positive reply from my artist about cutting down to 2 sizes and maybe reduce the number of tattoos to avoid having to reduce the output of new scenes.

Dissonant Soundtrack

A generally prefer more images to more variations of the same image, personally. One possibility is to limit the places where a tattoo can be, maybe just left shoulder and mons pubis as an example, so in certain poses you would not have to consider it at all.

Maeve

I doubt many people would care about how many... just care about *which* tattoos made the cut.

mdqp

Well, that's one of those things which we can decide by using polls (like, which of the two breast sizes to keep, which tattoos are the best and so on), although I hope to get suggestions from players about the tattoos, if they have any in mind. :)

mdqp

Yeah, that seems the most common sentiment (understandably so). Limiting the tattoo zones could also help with the workload, for sure, although I can always pick ones that don't "overlap" (for example, tramp stamp and pelvic tattoos are pretty good candidates to keep). I asked my artist today, and he said that by cutting one of the breast sizes, we can probably get there (roughly, of course each commission has its own challenges), so I might have you guys to vote which of the two sizes (large or "maxi") we keep for customization, and then we vote on which tattoos to use. :) That's the hope, at least. Having time to prepare things is a boon in this case, and I can test things with calm, and talk with you guys.

Alako

In TOTDC 1, graphic doesn't play too much of a roll, we mostly reply on your text descriptions. So personally, I don't really mind to have less graphic enchantment but having more development time focus on content. Or we can choice a middle of the road option to just have a character screen that shows all the customization of your Celeste, but with static CG through out the game. It also can be something to add in the future when you are polishing the game.

mdqp

I mean, the idea is still that I'll try to focus on content first, of course, but given that I am using Ren'py and custom art, we might as well try to get as much as we can out of it, or at least, that's the thought process. I want to make something that looks great, but I am not out to kill my own game. XD Figuring out the scope early on is better, to avoid wasting time afterward, but yes, we could always downsize the plans, if it seems like things are too much (but all the more reason to think about it now, since the game is still in its early stages). Yes, an approach similar to Caliross is always possible, of course.

Alako

I actually never check out Caliross till about 10 mins ago, so I just found out that your game has a character screen. XD Between work and family (and recently school again =_="), I don't have much free time on hand. That said, I do have to check out something I supported for.........more than 4 years......Time really flies.

mdqp

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. XD XD XD Here is hoping you like it, though, now I am worried! XD

John Hall

I'd like the breast size variations, but I can live without a range of different tattoos or hair colours.

mdqp

Gotcha! I mentioned this in some of the other comments, but I think for the next scene I'll try to reduce the breast sizes from 3 to 2 (since they are the biggest time sink), and cut out some of the tattoos. I might prepare a poll on which of the two larger sizes to use, so I know which one people would prefer.

Greggo

You could efficiently minimize the load by having one tattoo per location with different styles across them. Sometimes not taking an option is a choice of its own.

mdqp

I think for next time I'll try 2 for area (so 2 for the right arm, and two for the pelvis), and see how it goes, but yeah, spreading the variations around is also an option. I think we should be fine without having to cut too much, but we'll see.
