Notes

• Some pretty bloody niche content!

• Recorded everything with a Rode NT1 on the sound hole and NT55 pointed at the 12th fret.

• Used this as an exercise to shift backdrops and experiment with a brighter / natural background. Struggled and learned things.

• Arranged most songs both on baritone and standards - chose bari version just for just a few.

• Between this and ‘In Rainbows’ has to be their best complete albums. If you haven’t already, checkout Ok Computer!

how and why do you use two mics? isnt 1 enough?

Ro's Guitar Vault

G’day mate 👋 How: • Two mics, two separate channels, recorded at the same time • Pan one ~60% left and the other ~60% right (depending on level/tone) Why: • Common studio approach for acoustic guitar • Each mic captures different information (e.g. one more body/low-mids, one more detail/attack) • Gives a fuller stereo image rather than a single point source • More control in the mix (EQ/compression each mic differently) • Better consistency if dynamics change while playing It was recommended to me for the acoustic album, I tried it, liked the result, and it wasn’t hard to implement. Turned into a habit. Isn’t one mic enough? • Yep 👍 • One mic = simpler, faster, and can still sound great • Two mics = more depth, width, and post-production flexibility (& as it’s recorded on a separate track you can just get rid of the second mic if you don’t like it). For comparison - yesterday’s ‘Paranoid Android’ post was recorded just with the single NT1 pointed at the body. Hope that helps!

I see, thanks for your reply. I'll ask something unrelated to the topic. I want to buy my first microphone for acoustic recording. I'm torn between the Shure SM57, Rode NT1, and AT2020. I thought a condenser microphone would capture a more natural sound for acoustic guitar. What do you think? <3

Ro's Guitar Vault

Cool. Off the bat: NT1. • Don’t have experience with the AT2020. If you’re running a tight budget, could be a solid starting place for a condenser. • Shure SM57 was recommended to me but as a second mic - in place of the pencil mic. • NT1 or NT1a are both good condensers.
