Hey folks!

Sorry that this reaction got a little bit delayed, but it's time to dive into this cinematic drama! Definitely a beautifully shot film with some great landscapes. Feels a little fitting after I just got back from Wyoming (where a couple landscape shots were filmed)!

As always, thank you so much for your support here on Patreon. Until the next one, stay golden! ✨

Original Movie: Dances with Wolves

The fact that Kevin Costner won Best Director Oscar for this is incredible, and that too on his directing debut! He beat out some insane competition that year, including Martin Scorsese (GOODFELLAS), Francis Ford Coppola (GODFATHER PART 3), Stephen Frears (THE GRIFTERS) and Barbet Schroeder (REVERSAL OF FORTUNE). I maintain that the late John Barry's "John Dunbar Theme" (the 2-minute version especially) is one of the best musical compositions ever for a film and thoroughly deserved the Best Original Score Oscar he won for this. FUN FACT: John Barry was also responsible for arranging the iconic James Bond theme music.

I was super excited for Saturday Nat at the Movies, and was really looking forward to watching this movie with you but NOOOOOOOOO!! Dances With Wolves isn't currently available on any streaming service in the UK!! Damn those fools! I've ordered the blu ray and will watch it when it arrives hopefully tomorrow 😭😭😭

Darryl Low

Someone will no doubt prove me wrong, but in 6 years of movie reactions, I think this may be the first John Barry scored movie that Nat has reacted to 🤔😊

K.N.

A lot of people think James Cameron borrowed the plot of Avatar from this movie. Curious if Nat noticed that at all after watching this.

mitchhamilton64

i hate this take because the idea of a character integrating with a more down to earth way of life and its people and turning on "their own people" is not a new or hard to come up with idea.

mitchhamilton64

NAT! PLEASE! i dont know if you know this yet but you missed an end credits scene on the last attack on episode you watched! people been wanting you to see it before you get into the second part of season 3!

Getting this in just under the wire, I see. Apparently this leaves Prime in a couple of days. Which feels like how long it’s going to take to watch it.

mitchhamilton64

theres been a large amount of people who would like to see her reaction to it. just look at the comments for it. admittedly the weight of it is lost since the idea is the show sets up the scouts riding a great high and then the scene sets up some kind of hell for the second part.

Great movie! Dances with wolves is my friend!

Did you know 28 years later is it's own set of trilogies kind of like Star wars? You might want to plan for doing the sequel afterwards because it ends on a cliff hanger and if you enjoy the movie then you'll probably want to jump right into the next one. The second film jumps right into it from the cliffhanger and if you put it off it'll be a little jarring perhaps

DWW isn't my fav Costner film. I grew up in Montana where a lot of this was filmed, so the setting really is lost on me. That's just... backyard. Or traveling across the state. Prairie. Looking forward to a different genre next week.

Keith Jacobsen

Oh HELL yeah Dances With Wolves! Saturday just got MUCH better Nat! 😊

Stands With a Fist would later go on to portray Anakin Skywalker’s mom in Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. And if you want another Western with a great cast, Kicking Bird is in Maverick as well.

George Roybal

I see your points. Having said that. Best Picture. Best Director. Best Adapted Screenplay. Best Editing. Speak for themselves.

I have bits and pieces of the movie but I don't know if I've ever seen the whole movie beginning to end. I will check it out. You should check out the tv show Yellowstone. Kevin Costner and Graham Greene are in the Yellowstone universe. I recommend watching 1883 first. It's only on season and then check out season one of Yellowstone.

nat.... dances with wolves left because he wanted to try and talk to anyone who would listen. him being white and a soldier he would be the best chance of anyone listening. he literally says why he left

mitchhamilton64

OOOOOH! of course! the plot beats are the same! i mustve missed that. i mustve missed the part where dances with wolves had a twin brother in the military and hes disabled and thats used as leverage for him to integrate with the people so he could walk again. i missed the part where he was forced to integrate with the people and the people later turn on him for it while the people lost their sacred ancient tree. i missed all the bits in DWW where there is literally an afterlife that the people go to when they die. i missed the part where nyteri was a human and her family was killed by navi beings and she turned navi. i mustve missed the part where the tribe used their own resources to overcome the invaders and eventually push them off their land! i missed the part where there were several people on the invaders side who were on the natives side, 2 going so far as to sacrifice themselves for them. yes, its beat for beat the exact same story. silly me.

Don't forget Best Original Score for the late John Barry. He was only nominated 7 times in total (across both Score and Song combined) and this was his 5th and final win. "The John Dunbar Theme" composed for this film is IMO one of the greatest film music compositions ever.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I saw it in theaters, when it first came out. I made the mistake of going to it hungry, thinking I could grab a bite after the movie. It's a lengthy movie. When they offered him the raw heart of a bison, make that tatanka, i thought to myself: yeah, that looks great to me! Don't bogart the buffalo heart! 🦬 ❤️ One tiny thing kind of bugs me, the title, and his name, really should be "Dances With Wolf". Singular. We're the tribe counting the wolves they used in filming? The tribe had some doggos, but there was really only one wolf in the whole film. Watching this again reminded me how in love i was and still am with [Stands With Seven Fists]. I shall remain here 7 days, Enjoy the waitstaff and tip the salmon!

It is really good to see someone agrees with me. I don't think anyone here was making the claim that Avatar ripped this movie off, but they did refer to that rather persistent bisonshit* argument. Well countered. (Although the unobtainium rations at the fort were kind of obvious. Just sayin.) (C; *Correction: tatonkashit.

James McKey

Yeah, Nat missed that for sure.

James McKey

I love Nat and usually get her review scores but she lost me on this one. There’s a reason it won all the Oscars it did and while no story is perfect, giving this one a 7 is a travesty. Perhaps she just needs to watch it again to get the right mood of it. The fact that she was watching it for “reaction” and got interrupted by a power outage means she was likely pulled out of the experience. This movie is such a mood. The early scenes set that mood and the insanity of the west and how IF you were assigned out there you were likely either going insane, might go insane, or were incompetent. Most people didn’t set out to go there. Not until the gold rush and railroads at least.
