Content

Thanks, first of all, for all the feedback on my last post where I asked what kind of content you’d like to see. One of the main points, of course, was longer courses—for example, on The Grid, Bitwig, or how to make music in general. That’s something I’ve been planning for a long time but haven’t gotten around to because I’m constantly making tutorials or YouTube videos every few days.

However, creating full courses—from A to Z, Zero to Hero—is definitely something I want to do.

But here’s where I have a question for you, and it’s not just about these courses but my content in general. I personally believe that knowledge should be free. All my knowledge comes from free sources. I’m also not a fan of logins, cookies, paywalls, or anything like that. My natural inclination is to make as much as possible freely accessible for people who might not have the money but still need access to knowledge.

Now, here’s my dilemma. I have a Patreon where people can support me, and I also have tiers with content locked behind a paywall. Not everyone has access to those things. So, I wanted to ask for your thoughts.

What do you think?

Do you think it’s fair if you pay for my Patreon but I still make some content publicly accessible? Or would you prefer that, since you’re already supporting me here, the content is exclusively for you?

I really don’t want to upset anyone or make you feel like you’re wasting your money or anything like that. I’m just not sure how to handle this. On one hand, I absolutely want to reward my Patreons for their amazing support each month. On the other hand, I also want to make certain content freely accessible.

So, I’m a bit torn. Let me know what you think—I’d love your input!

On one hand, I might lose out on a lot of potential income by making everything free, but on the other, money isn’t my main priority. What’s most important to me is keeping knowledge as free as possible.

So, I’m stuck on what to put behind a paywall versus what to leave open. This is honestly one of my biggest challenges.

I’d love to know your thoughts—should I keep doing things as they are, make everything free, or only offer “lite” versions of courses for free with full versions behind the paywall? What’s your take on this? Let me know—it’d mean a lot! Thank you! 🙏

I don’t support you for exclusivity. I appreciate that your stuff is free to all! I love your ethos on this. I’m happy to support you bc of your knowledge and what you do resonates with what I do/want to do. I also support so I can ask you more questions and not feel like I’m bugging you too much!! :) If you wanted to put things behind a paywall that’s fine, but if you gave everything away for free I’d still be happy to support all the same! Thanks for what you do!!

Whether your stuff is free or not, I will continue supporting you on Patreon. You provide more value to me than what I pay, I almost feel bad.😉🤘 Really appreciate your content.

I don't generally look at Patreon as a way to get stuff, I look at it as a way to support creators who make stuff I like. It's effectively a recurring tip jar for me.| If you want to make a bunch of stuff free, go hard. I'll still maintain support because I like what you do.

First off al I think you might need some sleep. Its 4.30 am :) Second I dont think there is anything wrong with how you are handling things atm. Compared to what others are offering you might even undercharge. Your thoughts of willing to share everything for free are very noble but unfortunatelly that is not how the world works. You do need a roof above your head and you need to eat and unless you are loaded due to some inheritance or lottery win or whatever you need an income.. Besides that the hours made and equipment used for your videos like cameras, pc, microphones, audio equipment and software costs quite a lot of money aswell. I do think Patreon subscription model is quite unfair and can be easily taken advantage of. I mean if I would subscripe for premium tier today it will give me acces to all the content you previously published for the price of a single month. Talking about the course. I would be interested in something like an "open course" where for example once every month or two weeks you would have the option together with a small group of people to ask specific questions and get a deeper explanation..

A lot of considerations. I’ll just say my support is not at all contingent on benefits. I see it as a way to help support a creator I enjoy, who has helped me learn and love the grid. I will not feel ripped off if you don’t paywall a grid course. There are loads of considerations on your end, but I guess I can just speak for myself as a supporter.

**Exclusivity of the knowledge you provide is not important to me. I think things are fine.** If you have folks who are clamoring for that, you could always "release it exclusively to Patreon" for two weeks then to everyone else. Loopop has his ever growing PDF available for patreons. The PDF consolidates different things presented in his videos plus a few additional insights in one reference doc. That way, the information is shared broadly, but Patreons get an added convenience. Nick Batt over at SonicState gives samples and Decent sampler instruments produced over the course of his reviews. In both cases, these are things that are almost a by-product of their activities anyway and are not a whole new "thing" taken on to provide perceived added value. There's a bunch of different things like that you could do should you feel the need.

The vast majority of the Patreons I'm supporting release everything for free to the public. In some cases the public (free) releases are a bit later than the releases to Patreons (eg, early viewing of a video), but in many cases the free release to the public is (almost) immediate (within hours or maybe a few days). I do appreciate the posts on Patreon ("here's a new thing") anyway as it's easier to keep track of what I should look at than missing a YouTube suggestion because I was busy. In all those cases -- and for you too -- I'm basically following the same approach I would for, eg, someone busking: the money is "hey, thanks for that thing you did, I hope this will help you do more things like that". Rather than a payment to receive some new thing. So if you want to make more things free, I'd say go for it. As others have said, give how many things you put out it's been extremely good value for money from my point of view. That said, I suspect if you want to attract *more* paying Patreons you probably want to have some obvious "pay on Patreon and you get..." things. Which maybe could be, eg, some posts are Patreon-paying-member-exclusive for a period (a week? a month?). Or maybe there's *one* thing a month which you make Patreon exclusive to encourage people to become paying Patreons.

Yes, it's fine that you give away the same content as you offer to Patrons. But you need to eat and upgrade. Maybe keep the tutorials free and offer presets or other downloads to patrons? People can learn for free. And you retain an incentive to convert followers into patrons. I like learning about Bitwig almost as much as I like presets I didn't have to build myself :-) I hope you can find the balance between free and paid content that allows you to keep producing - your videos are super helpful!

Mike McClure

I know I support you on Patreon because I get a lot of value out of your work and I have learned so much. As it seems with others - so I wouldn't feel "stiffed" if you put everything free. If you did want to give out some exclusives to us, perhaps some behind the scenes or process work as a bonus for us? I know I'd be interested in seeing how things happen behind the scenes!

As others have said, I really like your ethos of knowledge sharing for free. The reason I pay the monthly patreon fee is because I feel that your content has real value and I want you to know that I appreciate you sharing it with me (us). The platform you've created works as is and I think should continue as such. However, if you did want to start monetizing content in some way, ie. by making some courses, long form, short form, whatever, I think it would be better to do this separately somehow. Maybe on a different platform? But you shouldn't feel in any way beholden to to your patreon members. I think we all agree that we support you on there because you're a bitwig god and we love what you do. And the fact that you give so much value to everyone, not just your supporters is amazing. Maybe it comes down to how you feel about your next moves, and finding a way for you to feel philosophically comfortable with the decision to actually try to make some proper money from your knowledge. I can see how you would find it a tough one. Probably not helpful, sorry...🙂

Ted

happy to to pay in order to free the knowledge

crouchie [doteditdot.com]

Your tutorials are amazing and have helped massively. I moved to BW from Logic, and before that knew practically nothing. Logic has TheMusicTechHelpGuy whose entire brain is apparently blocked into a series of YT tutorials that are available for free. They literally changed my life! ;-). You are definitely in that league of inspiration and so if you felt you could keep as much of your stuff free as you can I know you would attract many into using BW and making music. But, I mean, you have to cover your costs! So I don’t reckon you should go unrewarded. But whatever u can put out for free would have the greatest potential reach and encourage many others. And sorry, I’m waffling…. :-(

Dan Robertson

I would echo the others above. I pay to support you to share all of your great bitwig ideas, as a way of thanking you for doing what you do. I think it's a small price to pay and I would hate to see you start making things unfree.

Stephane Pigeon

I think a good compromise is to share the knowledge for free but reserve the assets (project files) for your patrons. If you want to earn a little money, I've learned from my own project (myNoise) that you need to offer something special for those who support you. That's human nature, most people expect to receive something when they contribute, like you expect a little "thank you" when you give something to someone. Without perks, not many people would donate to myNoise. (At the beginning, myNoise operated without perks... and it is the community of users who insisted for me to bring some. And indeed, it worked so). In your case, if the world were ideal, you wouldn't need to ask the question: Bitwig would pay you to create all these valuable tutorials to be distributed for free ;-)

Secret Cinema

For the amount of content you provide it's fair to get some revenue in return, for people to decide if they want that or not. Long courses take up a lot of creation time and therefore you can unlock them as a customer if you need it. Be sure to give an excellent description of what people can learn, as you usually do anyway. Thanks for all your content btw, it's amazing. Been using Bitwig since 0.8 beta and seeing you work ik makes me feel it's an endless learning and creative DAW. Cheers!

from here beyond

I think is absolutely awesome to share everything for free for everyone. Because in a for me perfect world this would be how it is with everything! But of course people might get confused or even upset when those you pay don't get anything more than those you don't pay. Because, I guess, they are used to get more for paying something. But for me that would be no reason to not give everything for free. Because I believe you would make our world a tiny bit "better" when giving all for free. And maybe even have an impact on how people are thinking about these things.

Fredy Engel [MiDi BiTCH]

I am also happy to pay for other users who may not have the money to spare. I believe that it is better to give than to receive and I am happy to share with those who do not have the resources to do so. I pay because I want to support you in your work, regardless of whether I receive exclusive added value in return that sets me apart from those who are not or not yet willing or able to pay.

Gabriel Pepici

You should be rewarded a lot more for your amazing work but you have chosen to share your knowledge and talent beyond remuneration. Reading all this comments I realized we are here a nice community with people that value principles other than just pecuniary compensation. Is this utopia? I will try to do my part to keep it a reality. Thank you so much Robert and respect!

polarity_music

Cool! Thanks so for all the thoughts so far, looks like we’re kinda all in the same page :)

Petr Čertík

I support you here because of what you do and want you to be able to keep doing it. If your content wasn't free in the first place, I probably wouldn't be here. On the other hand, courses probably take a LOT of work and I won't blame you if you decide to monetize them some other way.

See if you can offer an intro discount for your long running patreons .

FWIW my personal motivation is to chip in so that you can continue publishing stuff for free.

Colognialist

Dear Robert, I can understand your dilemma very well. I think that your approach so far is very well balanced. As a paying Patreon member, I have no problem with your content being freely available. My motivation for supporting you has nothing to do with a comparison that others could also get the content for free. My motivation is that you impart real knowledge to me. That you don't impart this knowledge with "fancy" plugins, but rather with fundamental knowledge and your experience. And everything with Bitwig stock, which is very important to me personally (different topic). I would like a Grid course and a Melodic House or Ambient course (even though you have already provided a lot of content on this). Perhaps you can also organize something with Bitwig to hold a "Bitwig Studio Official Level 1 Certificate of Achievement Workshop", for example. I know that this is a lot of work and I think that it should be rewarded. So I would have no problem if such courses were subject to a fee and would gladly pay for them out of conviction. Your content is absolutely top class - thank you very much for that. Best wishes from Cologne. Dirk
