In this video, I demonstrate how to use expansion techniques to match the dynamics of over-compressed drum samples with the rest of your track. Additionally, I show how to measure and compare the crest value of tracks to manage dynamic range across an album or a mix. I also introduce a free tool called DP Meter 5 to measure loudness and dynamic range in both RMS and crest modes.

Key Points:

Problem with Sample Compression:

Many sample libraries have overly compressed samples, which can create problems when mixing them with other tracks.

The dynamic range of these samples is usually squashed, which makes it hard for them to blend naturally with other elements in the mix.

Using Expansion to Match Dynamics:

Expansion helps stretch the dynamic range by making quieter sounds louder and louder sounds quieter, improving the overall balance.

You can use transfer curves or tools like Bitwig's compressor and Compressor+ to achieve this.

Expansion works well when trying to match the dynamics of over-compressed samples with your overall mix.

Using DP Meter 5 for Measuring Dynamic Range:

DP Meter 5 is a free tool to measure the crest value and loudness range of your tracks.

The crest value gives insight into how dynamic a sound is by measuring the distance between RMS (average loudness) and peak levels.

The higher the crest value, the more compressed the signal, and the lower the value, the more dynamic the signal.

Practical Application with Bitwig:

In Bitwig, I’ve created a preset that allows you to easily measure the crest value of individual tracks.

This preset compares the crest value of different parts of the mix (like a drum loop and a kick/snare bus) and helps adjust dynamics to match them.

Using this tool, you can quickly visualize and match the dynamic range between various parts of your track.

Matching Dynamics in a Mix:

This method helps bring tracks together by comparing their dynamic ranges and adjusting accordingly.

By using the preset in Bitwig, you can ensure that overly compressed sounds (like a drum loop) blend smoothly with other tracks, like your kick and snare bus.

Conclusion:

Matching dynamics using expansion and measuring crest values makes mixing and mastering easier.

By applying this method, you can avoid tracks sticking out due to being overly compressed compared to the rest of your mix.

Takeaway:

This method simplifies the process of mixing over-compressed sounds by expanding their dynamic range and measuring their crest value. With tools like DP Meter 5 and the preset in Bitwig, you can easily match dynamics and ensure your tracks sound cohesive without any overly compressed elements standing out.

can you measure COMPRESSION?

To follow up on my last video you can actually measure how compressed a signal is. In the RMS world, this is called Crest Factor. It helps you get a sense of whether you’ve gone too far with compression or saturation. I’m also sharing a handy tool for Bitwig that lets you measure it directly. But even if you’re using Ableton Live, Cubase, or Logic, you can use a plugin like dpMeter to check the compression levels in your tracks. I look forward to trying this out But all my music time lately is occupied by your melody/chord maker scripts. Great stuff. Thank you for it all

every time I see the thumbnail for this as a thumbnail, small and clipped, it looks like you are leaning forward smoking a cigarette lol, idk why, the white highlight in the beaker and I think you are in a gambling den lol -- also you should make a video just so you can make that as an image. lol maybe something with random and chance. <3
