In this video, I dive into a popular hardware device called HiChord, which lets you play chord progressions easily with just a few buttons.

While some people are amazed by its simplicity and others criticize the price, I show you how to replicate its functionality inside Bitwig using a custom preset, so you don’t need the actual hardware. You’ll see how to play diatonic chords, switch chord types, add some spice with modifiers, and even record your chord ideas directly into Bitwig.

If you want to try it out, you can download my preset for free from GitHub and let me know if you’d like to see more features or a version for Bitwig 5.

Introduction after a break from making videos, explaining the interest in the HiChord hardware device.

Overview of the HiChord device, its popularity and controversy due to its price and utility.

Explanation of what the device does: lets you play diatonic chord progressions using buttons and a joystick for changing chord types.

Demonstration of replicating the HiChord functionality inside Bitwig using a preset and a standard keyboard.

Clear description of controls: playing chords mapped to keys, modifier keys switch chord types, and joystick emulation for inversions and variations.

Discussion of chord types available: major, minor, seventh, major seventh, minor ninth, suspended, diminished, augmented.

Explanation of how to keep chords in scale or add "spicier" out-of-scale notes using modifiers.

Instruction on recording output from this setup into a MIDI or note track in Bitwig.

Commentary on the basic nature of the device from a music theory perspective and thoughts about its price.

Accessibility: free Bitwig preset provided on GitHub, open to user feedback for improvements or version 5 adaptation.

Encouragement to try out the preset, leave feedback, and support the channel.

I Wanted a HiChord, But My Wallet Said "We Have HiChord At Home."

HiChord is a pocket-sized chord synth, looper, and drum machine that lets anyone create and play full songs - no music theory, no laptop, no steep learning curve. I recreated the whole thing in Bitwig, so you don’t necessarily need the hardware. By the by, it’s probably useful to remind people that '7' is the notation for the “dominant seventh”, found in both minor and major scales. In natural minor, it’s found on the seventh degree (in C natural minor, the B♭7 chord). In harmonic or melodic minor, it’s an actual dominant seventh (G7 is the same chord in C major, C melodic minor, and C harmonic minor). Does sound like you're making good use of BWS6, with this patch. (Haven't renewed my update plan so I'm stuck in 5-land for now.) Were Bitwig to add a chord track, the integration could be even more interesting. There are many plugins which implement similar approaches to chord playing. (Instachord comes to mind.) Not sure those get that much love. Replacing them with a Grid patch is a neat move, in part because you can adapt the patch to your liking. To me, your wrappers are more interesting because the results come relatively close to voiceleading. https://musictheory.pugetsound.edu/mt21c/VoiceLeading.html Speaking of which… My “dream”, for a while, has been to create a plugin which does automatic voiceleading. Thanks in large part to vibecoding, I was able to reach that in PdLua, last year. https://in-thread.sonic-pi.net/t/voice-leading-algorithm/318/8 At this point, I should be able to do the same in VST3, AU, CLAP, and AUv3. So, in a way, your post is rekindling my interest in that project.

updated for Beta3: re-download and post feedback please! Beta3 killed some note voices early, in b2 it worked for some reason.
