Heres a short overview:

This presets outputs single monophonic notes.

I explain how its wired in the video.

Try and play around with the probability modules in the Grid.

Change the playback speed with the scaler to get some odd timings.

Use bend, pinch & mirror to get some subgrooves for the melody.

Exchange the polysynth in the FX box for your own synths / vsts.

Download the preset here and leave me some feedback.

Thanks for the patch and for the explanations. Relatively clear and it could inspire some variation, say replacing this “pick the top note” idea with something more random or more meaningful. Watching these, I’m really thinking we need Bitwig to release a MIDI grid. Your Grid Note Out utility is neat, but we want flexibility and clarity. Shouldn’t be that hard for the first-party dev to do. The other part, which might require quite a bit more work, is some form of encapsulation. At this point, it’s what differentiates the Grid from several of the other grid-based software modulars. What you’re doing with a patch like this is actual coding but it has to go against some pretty obvious coding guidelines as you should probably generalize the note trigger probability routine instead of reproducing it for each pitch in an octave. (I’m not a coder but I realize this is the kind of thing which can make a big difference in deeper coding.) Not to say that your patch is hard to understand. It’s remarkably clear, under the circumstances. Just that Bitwig GmbH could help us make much cleaner patches.

Hi there! I watched this yesterday on YouTube and realized it is probably better to leave comments and questions here. First off, thanks for the great videos — glad to support you on Patreon. I’m relatively new to Bitwig — I’ve used Logic since the Emagic days and dabble in Reason and Live but Bitwig is the first tool that has captured my imagination. It seems like a wonderful compliment to Logic as the two are good at really different things. So I’m slowly starting to learn my way around, and your videos are great help. I’ve taken the Melody Maker and added some tweaks and changes to get something truly inspiring. One question I have that may be very simple: How do I take the Melody Maker and wire it so it starts with a key press, and the root note is determined by the keyboard? I am sure there’s a way, but the keyboard input modules are giving me some trouble. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks! That’s a hell of a lot simpler than I was making it! I’ll give it a try...
