What I find interesting is that from observation is, in pictures I take in my garden, the background behind and beneath is often quite dark. I’ve puzzled about how I would get the effect in watercolor. Now I see that gouache is perfect for this. Thanks for this tutorial!

Debra Broido

I’ve only used gouache for final light details in watercolor. This was interesting.

I want to try this. Can you suggest a set in a beginner price range? I have been using cheap, chalky watercolors to get the effect, but it isn't as bold and takes more work.

I love this tutorial so much. I’ve been playing with gouache some, but it’s so helpful to see your technique in video. One problem I’ve had with white gouache is making it appear opaque. Watching this, I think it’s because I haven’t let the layer underneath dry completely first. Thank you once again for sharing your expertise and all the variety in your tutorials.

Terri Rocheleau

Love this. So pretty. Can’t wait to get home from out of town to paint

Maggi Marmion

You’ve convinced me ! 😊😊👍❤️

Can I use my watercolor brushes with gouache ? Or should I dedicated gouache brushes?

Trish Rowe

HI. Can you use Gouache on a canvas?

Anita

This was really interesting. Didn't know anything about gouache. How is gouache different from watered down acrylics?

Debbie Fulton

Thank you Ellen for sharing this Wonderful tutorial on painting with Gouache!!! I haven’t used Gouache since I was in Art School and then I drifted away and focused on using Acrylics. The funny thing is I used Acrylics in a way that is very similar to what you’ve just shown us. Back before my husband started showing signs of Alzheimer’s he actually called Blick and spoke with someone about what he might buy me based on the other orders in my account… He bought me a Lovely set of Holbein Gouache paints, which have sat unopened until now…. Thank you for this FUN tutorial!! I got my Gouache out and just had an AMAZING time painting these Wildflowers!!!❤️ I’m going to check out your other tutorials for Gouache on your YouTube channel!! I had so much FUN!!!😊

Ann Petrochko

I just stated experimenting with gouache over the last few weeks, so I was so excited to see this video. Please do more gouache tutorials!

Debbie Fulton

I went back into Ellen’s YouTube channel and in her tutorials she suggested not to use our good watercolor brushes because the Gouache “gunks up” the brushes after a while…. Hope this helps!!😊

Toby Kyrk

Great video. I would to see you do a beginners series with gouache.
