Captain Disillusion: Heroic Feats of YouTube Debunkery - Live at QED 2016

Self-proclaimed superhero Captain Disillusion reveals his cutting-edge techniques for analyzing viral video hoaxes and explaining them to viewers with tragically short attention spans. What visual effects tricks are commonly used by fakers? How can I make my own skeptical YouTube videos a little less terrible?

Outpox

Awesome ! :D

dbryte

Great talk umm...Captain Disillusion or Alan what's-his-name?! Well even though your goofy assistant passably gave your talk, I know your awesome captain leadership is what made it successful in the end!

Tim Monaghan

A great, well done talk. Loved it!

Matthew Zeller

This is easily the most well produced presentation I've ever seen, great work as always captain. Also you look like Josh from Drake and Josh... You silver spray-paint huffer ;-) Seriously though your content is great and I'm glad you read through the comments to see what a positive effect you have. We love you captain (Alan is pretty great too).

Thanks for sticking with the D all these years Alan, you guys are a great team. Has anyone told you that you both look quite similar?

Timmo Warner

I enjoyed this talk a lot, and it looks like it went over very well. Strangely, as a long time viewer I found the part about the music the most interesting. It's so familiar but I never realized how many elements go into it.

Glad the talk went well. Some really good acting at the beginning as for a while I wasn't sure if you were actually nervous (or had been huffing paint) or were acting. Hopefully you'll do some more live events so we all get a chance to see you in person. But the pert at the end was particularly powerful, I don't have the skills to create content like you, or the time. But by supporting you, I can help you in your goals and that ultimately means I'm (and all other patrons) are helping make the world a better place.

I enjoyed this - thanks for putting it out =D

Charlie Deets

Loved the whole thing. Your intern did great. How long did it take to practice the choreographed interactions with the video? The performance seemed flawless.

Hi CD! I liked so much this video that I decided to X3 my pledge.

Dan Root

Damn, I love PSP, that's a good move.

I must admit the captain has never made me tear up before (45:00) And I gotta say you are a master of pacing to make an engaging 45 minute presentation.

Jay Rawson

That was wonderful, I'm going to re-watch it right now. This level of awesomeness makes me proud to support you on Patreon , guess I am friggen smart dammit!

DJ Flea

That was amazing!!!

Patrick Foster

Outstanding! I look forward to CD more than anything else. I wish all your videos were 45 minutes long.

Been looking forward to this for ages - it did not disappoint. Brilliant!

Eckhart lol

Thanks for doing what you do.

He's even good at pretending to be bad at presentations. Is there anything he can't do?

Hola capitán!! I'm from Mazatlán, a small city of México, I'm not sure you speak spanish so I'm going to speak a terrible english, so please be polite if I misspelled a word :-)

Anonymous

I press "enter" by mistake, sorry, I was not finish yet, ok, what a I want to say is that you mister, you really do a great work, and I want to help you with subtitles in spanish for your oldest videos, I have time. Aaaaand that is all I want to say about that.

Anonymous

Great job. Very helpful :D

Charlie Ross

That was really fun! And, if I ever meet you in person (again), I'm definitely going to try to get more out of you about Occ the skeptical caveman. I have a feeling that would be an interesting conversation. :-)

Anonymous

What can I say, I literally stumbled across your YouTube page seeking an answer to that Russian Ghost Car video and watched your precise and definitive explanation. Next, I find myself watching your entire backlog of videos and then I'm pressing the subscribe button. That was yesterday. Today I find myself in desperate need for more and have added you to my list on Patreon. Why the hell are you so watchable????

Ali

Brilliant as always, Cap..erm..Alan ;)

Anonymous

you're extremely talented alan! your public speaking skills are very honed. great content as always.

Susan Gerbic

I'm in this video also! That makes TWO Capt. D videos this year. Of course you are using the photo I'm in as a negative, but it wasn't my photo. :-) I'm still stoked.

Yeah! That was the second burn already! Cap is starting to grind some sort of axe here...

Rob Spiess

Hang on, at 1:52 the video says ©MMMLVI which is 3056. Is Cap'n from the future? I'm sensing a mosaic of easter eggs which may eventually assemble into a jigsaw puzzle of an origin story. Or maybe it was just a spelling mistake.

After I finished making all the technical stuff of the presentation, I had about a week and a half to practice and I did it pretty much every day, multiple times a day so it would all be instinctively imprinted in my brain =S

Thanks! Interesting fact: in practicing the talk I kept going over time, but when the time came to perform for real, I somehow managed to fit the time slot perfectly. Pressure is the best motivator.

I wish i was gay and you were single and also gay and we could have a strictly non-platonic relationship

Anonymous

Thanks for taking the time to polish this one. It's a special treasure!

Gega _

So good I've watched 2.5 times

Awww, was Benny a Lionhead? He looks like my blonde, female Lionhead/Jersey Wooly, named Chubby. I live in Florida, too, so maybe they're siblings, haha. He looks like a very happy bun, loafing with your cat. Bwehh, he's just so cute. I'm sorry for your loss.
