I think the translation may be a bit weird for the line about Luffy never saying goodbye. He usually says "See you later" which is sometimes translated as "goodbye" or just "bye". In this episode I think what he meant was "I've never said goodbye to someone I want to see again" like you guys assumed.

About the part where you said "when he waved goodbye to everyone at his hometown" - i think this is a translation issue, luffy normally says something like "see you later" which in japanese they have a few expression for, in english they always translate it into "goodbye" ... sorta like nakama and friend.

I think that Luffy showing restraint isn't really a new thing. Vivi and Shanks both made pretty big impressions on him. He showed restraint at Drum Island when Nami was sick and Vivi got shot in the arm by the town guard, and at Kuja Island when his friends were petrified. He didn't fight back against Bellamy either. You've got to be a Celestial Dragon level asshole and seriously threaten Luffy's friends for him to go off on you

It’s hard to forget sometimes that Chopper is an animal, even though he shares humanistic traits in the story for the sake of the shonen but animals are not able to differentiate very well what different human's look like so yes Carsons assumption on that is pretty spot on.

Luffy showing restraint is an intentional portrayal of his growth and you’re supposed to look at it that way. A lot of this is the result of some of his training and the trauma he experienced 2 years ago. So, you can say that he is more consciously aware of his surroundings which in turn has probably changed his behavior patterns and how he approaches certain situations.

Luffy using Conqueror's Haki to handle those hooligans never gets old—perfect crowd control. Zoro shattering the crew's dreams while casually talking about fate as his scar was revealed was epic. Sanji barely survived two years with Ivankov, lol. Regarding his eye, he's finally showing the other side of his face, making him look oddly different. It's interesting how his newly revealed eyebrow swirls differently compared to the other.
