Fisher Tiger backstory > Ace, Luffy, sabo backstory. In terms of Pacing and Enjoyment

Envyus

He both let Arlong go and released him from prison.

Jeremy

Didn’t think y’all would drop , appreciate ya’ll taken time away from the real world /personal things🫡🫡

Sanji Joestar

Very good discussion as a whole Can't wait to see where this all leads In universe it's been 200years since Fishmen have been considered 'people' so even if we know the reality is completely different to that. Them being allowed a place at the world summit is the closest they get to having any form of impact. And as mentioned the World summit happens every 4 years which is why Otohime mentioned the ''oddly specific'' numbers you guys pointed out the other day. Tiger's heroic actions kinda jeopardized the diplomatic side of the problem. Worth it but yeah...

Sanji Joestar

And yeah the long hair guy(Strawberry) has bandages all over it because that's actually his skull. Sbs about that topic lol " Q: A question for Oda!! What are the insides of Vice Admiral Strawberry's head? -P.N. Mami Oda: Vice Admiral Strawberry has appeared on several occasions such as the Buster Call in Enies Lobby and the Whitebeard war, as I recall, but on those occasions he has been wearing a hat, I believe. Although we would think "Oh what a long hat", in the recent flashback of Fish-Man Island, it was shown how the bandages on his head twisted up to the top. In other words, yes. Strawberry is a person with a long head. It isn't his hair that is long. A "long-headed human" with a lonnnng skull is the correct answer. He is very good at headbutts. "

Sometimes we need a break from watching Sometimes watching IS the break we need 🙏

Sanji Joestar

On the wall of Kizaru's office there's a board saying '' Unclear Justice ''. I think many comments mentioned it by now but each of the admiral has a form of justice attached to them. They've been namedropped at some points during the show too. " Q: Mr. Odacchi, I have a question. It's a serious one! In volume 63, page 144, there's a partial message behind Kizaru. Aokiji's motto is "Lazy justice." So what are Kizaru's and Akainu's and Odacchi's mottos? Please tell me. -K. Z. K. Jones Oda: What? Mine too? Well, here's what they are. Akainu Absolute Justice Kizaru Uncertain/Unclear Justice Aokiji Lazy Justice I love Anpanman. Well, anyway, if you have a lot of free time, you can think about what I meant by that. I love Takashi Yanase (creator of Anpanman). Akainu's justice involves his eradicating all forms of evil, as shown by the destruction of Robin's hometown of Ohara. At the time, Aokiji based his thinking on "Burning Justice," But through lots of thinking, he resorted to his current "Lazy Justice." Kizaru probably saw everything from a distance and chose whatever he thought fits best.

Matthew Gilroy

The Fishmen WERE seen as human at this time. Thanks to the decree made 200 years ago for Fishman Rights

Matthew Gilroy

Why are you dogging on Queen Otohime so much when King Neptune "Bum of the Sea" has stuck his fat fish ass down on Throne-sama and ain't done SHIT for 20+ years😂

Jeremy

Preach 🗣

Matthew Gilroy

It was never stated that we as the audience are "supposed" to be on Queen Otohime's side. Before he recalls the events of the flashback, Jimbei says he wasn't sure which of the two were right (Tiger or Otohime). The point of the flashback is literally to communicate history. This is basically a history lesson. And also why some people don't like the arc. It's educative and informative rather than the typical Shonen storytelling. Regardless, I don't see how it's better to die and live a depressing life like caged animals rather than taking a risk and living freely. Just my personal opinion

100Rainy

Loved the discussion, even the criticisms. There's lots to respond to of course, but it's best to save it until the end of the flashback. Glad you guys are overall liking it so far though, Jinbe and Arlong are handled especially well here imo.

Ultra Ball

I’m excited to see how your thoughts evolve.

hussam abdelalim

Please note that with her "super empathy" she knows exactly what people really want, the are just too scared

Oussama Essamadi

While not necessarily making you "like" Arlong, this backstory does really re-contextualise a lot of Arlong. Carson, you were talking about Kong, Commander-in-Chief of the World Government.

Coqnbauz

MAJOR DISAGREEMENT (still love both of you though): Otohime doesn’t NEED to remind the fishmen of the historic oppression and persecution they have gone through. They ALL know. She’s not leaving anything out. She just wants to start the push for better relations. She’s not saying that tomorrow everyone will be happy and everything will be great. She’s urging the populace to start it NOW so that in the future they don’t have to deal with this anymore. All she’s asking for is for her people to sign a paper that will allow their kingdom to be represented in the World Summit; to normalize relations with humans Idk why you’ve decided that she wants them to go up to the surface right now and hug a human. That’s LITERALLY not what she’s saying at all. Her entire argument is that by signing the petition, Fishman Island will be allowed a seat at the World Summit which will get their foot in the door and allow a Pro-Fishman voice at the literal world negotiating table. This move would give their people more leverage/power, they would have a say in world affairs, they would have the ability to sway other kingdoms to their side (making the world a lot safer for fishmen), AND the Marines would be obligated to protect the island. What Fisher Tiger and the Sun Pirates did was great and their contribution to Fishman history and self-esteem cant go unnoticed , but because they had no real power they couldn't accomplish much. It was literally them vs EVERYONE ELSE. They were just slinging rocks at a titan (the World Government). Most of the world sees the Marines as a positive force so them actively sinking Marine ships probably didnt help either and Jimbei even recognizes this. Otohime is equal parts idealist and pragmatist: she's chasing her ultimate goal, but she fully understands the steps she needs to take to get there. She knows that there will be hardship before reaching their destination (freedom under the sun), but each stone placed on that dirt path will make it easier to place more stones down, eventually creating a path that bridges the gap between their oppression and their salvation. She's definitely not just some out of touch, spoiled Queen or a fool.

ideo

By definition yes. But the people still discriminate them as if they were mere fish lol

Oussama Essamadi

Keep cooking mate, I ain't eating though 🙏🙏

Matthew Gilroy

EOussama I remember you defending Enies Lobby and it's writing with cp9 (especially Kaku) and Lucci's backstory. If you want to be stuck in the past and eat those leftovers, instead of this gourmet meal with meats and cheeses that Oda is giving us in his interesting and bold first post timeskip arc then you do you👋🏾

Ty

Always love your discussions, thanks for all the time you put into this. Jimbei may be a whaleshark fishman but he still is my 🐐

Coqnbauz

AND she's reflective of Fishman Island (weak but with a deep yearning for something more). Even at this point in the backstory, she's a phenomenal character. OH AND you can argue that she's more well protected than someone in the Noah district, but if a human had to choose between her and any other fishman, THEYD CHOOSE HER SO SHES EVEN MORE AT RISK THAN A LOT OF FISHMEN. AAAAAND she doesnt think her way is the only way to achieve freedom. She allows/sanctions Fisher Tiger and the Sun Pirates to do what they want. Instead of deciding for her people, she goes out onto the street without guards to PERSUADE them because she knows change can only happen when you're WILLING to change. Fishmen are NOT in the position to just sit and wait for the humans to have a change of heart, they need to change or else they'll continue to stagnate or get into an even worse situation.

Duffy the Nar Slayer

When it comes to the Marine hierarchy and where The Warlords would fall into it if they were actually ranked members, I would say the Warlords would fall just under The Admirals but definitely above The Vice Admirals. Warlords don't really have a position of authority in the Marines; they can't really command marine soldiers. The title is more a position of reverence and power. But ranking the strength and weight of the position, they definitely rank above the Vice Admirals. None of The Vice Admirals would be able to handle a Warlord. With the exceptions being Garp and probably Tsuru.

Fabulous

Otohime is a spoiled brat. She wasn’t born rich, living in her fantasy world. She just happened to be rich and the queen but bot an actual leader. So gullible and naive it pisses me off. Anytime she is on the screen i just want to skip the part. I almost forgot how much i disliked her when i watch fishmen for the first time

Vlee

Lots of love for you guys, hope the day goes well <3

Matthew Gilroy

Oh god and that annoying Jamon shit as well😂

BOLDcast

She said “sign this to relocate”

BOLDcast

We’re not upset that’s she wants change we’re upset that she is getting drunk and blaming the lack of forward progress on her own people when she is the one with the power to change things. Yes it is admirable that she wants change to be democratic, but the stage isn’t set for that radical of a move and she is putting all of her people in grave danger and suggesting this too early. By saying “she can’t wait for people to have a change of heart”, you’re implying that we expect her to wait until a magical change manifests itself in the hearts of the people on the surface but we never argued that. It’s not even that we think her ideas are bad or that it’s not a future worth striving for. But she is gambling with the lives of the children she wants to protect by wanting to move the island before measures are taken beforehand to make sure that they won’t be invaded and enslaved. There are more ways than one to achieve what she wants, but the way she’s going about it is reckless, and not reckless in a “stubborn visionary who refuses to compromise on freedom because she’s so empathetic” kind of way Also you say “she’s a phenomenal character” at the start of your reply comment, again stuff like that implies to me that you think we don’t think she’s a good character, which isn’t true.

BOLDcast

Wait clarify for me: Was the petition about movie fishman island to the surface and relocating? Or was it like you said, about joining the world summit? Maybe we’re just genuinely confused but I’m pretty sure when the signatures were introduced it was because she was already going to the world summit and was wanting to show them the signatures while she was there. (Then she couldn’t go because of fisher tigers actions)

Sanji Joestar

The petition is for relocating Fishman Island at the surface (not necessarily around Mariejoie tho). The petition is intended to be brought up during the World summit aka Reverie. But following the Sun Pirates actions, it's now impossible for a few more years until the next one when they'll be allowed to attend.

BOLDcast

Okay so we weren’t wrong about that detail If you think crying and blaming your subjects for not wanting a radical change they aren’t ready for is what an admirable leader does, then I don’t know what to tell you She could have spent her time better rather than dying of a broken heart after people disagreed with her. She could have established relations better with other islands before putting forward such a radical relocation in a climate where they are likely to be sold and enslaved. She put all of her eggs in this basket and literally died when it didn’t work. She should have accepted earlier that this course of action wasn’t the best way to spend her entire political career and made changes in other ways. Try changing the hearts of the humans rather than ask your people to take a deadly risk with their children as the first step. Neptune could have done more as well, but I imagine people don’t hold Neptune to as high of a standard because he isnt claiming to strive for change and then doing the bare minimum and blaming the people for being short sighted. He’s not the best, but he’s not claiming to be a ‘holier than thou champion of progress’. She puts the scrutiny on herself by being an activist, it comes with the territory

BOLDcast

I will add that it SEEMS that she died of a broken heart but we haven’t watched past this episode so we don’t know if that’s true I’m just going off her seemingly sick and dying in bed surrounded by her children

Coqnbauz

Yes the petition was for relocation but, from what I understood, it’s not to immediately move up there. It’s more of a display of intent to normalize relations and become closer. It’s a petition so show that Fishmen have the desire to live underneath the same sun as everyone else. Basically “we’re interested in cooperation, are you?”

BOLDcast

Again though, she said “sign to relocate” I think it is also what you’re saying, but it seemed pretty clearly to us to be about moving the island.

Sanji Joestar

I think the best option is to just wait and see how things unfold since this is an ongoing backstory. What's intended by relocation isn't strictly defined either.

Coqnbauz

Yes, I agree that she shouldn't have gotten drunk and lambasted everyone, but she is literally doing what you're asking her to do. You want her to establish relations with other islands: she has a ticket to the World Summit, that's what she intends to do there You want her to try to change the hearts of her people: she does that every day by going out on her soapbox and trying to persuade them/ demonstrate that cooperation is possible. As an activist in a position of power she's literally doing everything in her power to affect change (minus legislating it). The petition isn't an on/off switch, it's just a display of want or intent. That's what most petitions are. They aren't going to just swim up to the surface and live on an island given to them by the world government tomorrow. They will have to negotiate their terms (which will probably include protection from pirates and slavers) and over time Fishmen will relocate there if they choose to. It's a non-binding agreement. Its true that she's potentially endangering her people, but the ONLY people that go to Fishman Island are pirates and slavers BECAUSE they're so isolated culturally, politically, and geographically.

Coqnbauz

Well...yeah lol

Coqnbauz

In Episode 541 Otohime says: "Even though its impossible now, think of 10 or 15 years from now. For the next time we can participate in the World Summit" So it seems as though she understands how big of an ask this is and that in their current position, relocation was impossible, but the petition would lead to further cooperation between Fishmen and Humans as well as future invitations to the World Summit.

BOLDcast

whether or not the common citizens of fishman island want to participate doesn't change how the world sees them. It can help, but acting like that's EVERYTHING she could be doing is wrong. She spent 15 years asking for signatures and then threw a tantrum when it didn't work. What was the WG going to say? "Oh, you got X number of signatures from the subhuman fish race that we enslave and view the same as animals on your change.org petition? Well then that's that, slavery is over, lets move you all to the surface!" The fish people are afraid of humans, but whether or not they are afraid of humans isn't the limiting factor in their freedom since the humans are the ones enslaving them and treating them as less than human. So how does this petition actually change hearts and minds? This is the most 2017 twitter activist change.org aahh thing I've ever seen and you can't honestly believe that this is how race relations work. She's communicating with her people which is good. She is valuing their opinions and honoring them which is good. She is going out herself and saving humans from shipwrecks which is good. But you cannot honestly expect me to say "She did the best she could" after seeing her: A) beat her impoverished citizens for stealing food for their 10 starving children (who had food until human pirates stole from them). B) Spend 15 years asking for meaningless signatures on a bill that the Celestial Dragons would not care about C) Cry why she didn't get her way and blame her people for being cowardly when all they wanted to do was keep their children safe. She was not some perfect leader, and I don't expect her to be, but YOU'RE the one who took issue with what we said in the video as if we were so misinformed and not paying attention and missing details. She absolutely IS NOT doing what we said, she is doing the most one-track-minded approach. Here is the main point we're getting at in the discussion of this video, and I ask simply how you disagree with this following statement as a distillation of our opinion on this situation: "Change doesn't happen in a straight line and its foolish for her to expect her people to stick their necks out with no assurances of safety." If you don't disagree with that statement, then we don't disagree.

Richie the Lion

Otohime had a point. It's not explained well enough, but at this point Fishmen kingdom is a part of World Government. They have a seat at the table. Slavery oficcially outlawed by WG, except Celestial Dragons, but for them there's no difference between humans and fishmen. All beneath Celestials.

Coqnbauz

Please please please don’t try to talk down to me about race relations, I’m a first gen black-Caribbean american 😅😅 idk if you’re maybe reading too far into things or just misunderstanding what I’m saying I really don’t want to attribute malice to you It’s not JUST about perception, it’s about real tangible power that they can be working to achieve instead of sitting at the bottom of the ocean waiting for racists to turn a new leaf By cooperating with humans more, she hopefully lessens the amount of animosity between both groups, gains actual tangible power in the WG, gains allies from the other kingdoms, gains access to resources they didn’t have before, they gain protection from pirates (the main people actually coming down, kidnapping, and enslaving them), and she establishes a path towards peace (or at least a better peace than what they had before, which was NOTHING) Change OUGHT to come from outside but before it happens, you can change things internally She’s not asking them to completely cast aside their prejudices garnered over centuries of abuse and discrimination, she’s asking them to put it aside for a single second so they can sign a simple piece of paper that will hopefully help them in the future This is the EXACT reason Fisher Tiger died feeling such an overwhelming shame: he wasnt able to cast aside his (understandable) hatred for a single second so that he can receive a blood transfusion and he paid the price What could she be doing instead? The WG is literally willing to LET THEM ATTEND THE WORLD SUMMIT, THE GATHERING OF LEADERS ACROSS THE ENTIRE WORLD The petition isn’t an on/off switch, I never stated it was, and I’m not sure why you keep acting as if that is what I’m saying ???? It’s strange It’s not some magical fix It’s not the only thing she’s doing, she’s actively trying to educate the next generation about humanity, she’s having public dialogues with her citizens about the subject, she’s willing to let everyone speak and be heard I disagree: it’s not that big of an ask, it’s a petition that can be rescinded at any time by the Fishmen if they want. It’s not a binding vow You referred to it as a BILL??? Why do you think it’s permanent? There’s no indication that it would be, theres no indication that it would be signed into law immediately, and that’s not how petitions work in real life.

BOLDcast

on the last point you straight up avoided what i was saying and pretended to contend with it like most of your replies so far. and now I'm "talking down to you about race relations?" This conversation is going nowhere Take this conversation back to twitter where it belongs

Coqnbauz

I’m sorry but you literally did talk down to me? Idk if you forgot your previous comment but you implied that my grasp on race relations was absurd and/or laughable I noticed you edited that out of your last comment and now you’re playing dumb about it. Again, very strange thing to do… I noticed you’ve avoided discussing what she actually said in episode 541. Her quote demonstrates that she indeed understands that change doesn’t happen in a straight line. So idk what gripes you have with her at this point. She understands where everyone is coming from, she knows it’s a big ask, she’s doing everything in her power to make change, and she understands change doesn’t happen in a straight line So these aren’t actually criticisms of her I agree slapping a poor guy is a bad look and wrong but in the context of a Japanese manga/anime it was supposed to be a “motherly” disciplining or gag, that’s why the guy gets up and is all smiling like “thanks Otohime, I won’t do that again ! :D “

Coqnbauz

I adore your reactions, I wait for them every single day, but its just strange to me that you would act like this about the race relations comment that YOU posted. You can't just edit that out of your comment and then act dismissive about it when I respond to it. Its either that you posted it, realized that you shouldnt have, and then edited it out or posted it, got called out for it, and are now trying to hide that you did post it. Noticed another edit on your last response, what you posted before was "and now I'm "talking down to you about race relations?" This conversation is going nowhere and you're taking it there quickly". Need I remind you that YOU started the entire discussion about understanding race relations? Must be why you edited that comment lmfao

BOLDcast

Okay if you feel that I was being disrespectful, then I have no problem apologizing for that. I didn’t mean to be condescending But if you’re all of the sudden keen on referring to my previous comments then I’ll refer you to the last part of my most recent comment: If this is the type of conversation you want to have, then take it elsewhere

Coqnbauz

In the most respectful manner and fashion possible: how am I supposed to reply to you if I can’t refer back to what you said previously? Thank you for the apology. I apologize for spamming replies, I’m not trying to debate-bro you into liking Otohime more than you do I’m just genuinely confused as to what more she could possibly be doing ? It seems as though you have a lot of critiques of her activism, but I’m not sure if you’ve provided any alternative actions she should be taking ? I agree completely that she shouldn’t be drunk posting on main and boxing civilians in the streets Keep on with the reactions, both of you are chill and better than 70% of the OP community (the powerscalers that can’t read to save their lives)

BOLDcast

I would love to engage this topic further But I don’t feel as a participant in this conversation that doing so would provide either of us with any meaningful takeaway To be clear as well, I only deleted or edited things in my previous comments before I figured you would have seen them, not after, because I wanted to make myself as clear as I could and they were things that I was worried would be taken the wrong way or would distract from what I was saying.

Coqnbauz

Glad to see the previous reply was deleted! It was a good discussion. Take care and I wish y'all the best!!

Alex Hajir

I do think Otohime is meant to be portrayed as a naive idealist. I am of the opinion that a little naivete is okay, and perhaps even a good thing. Both her and Fisher Tiger are layered characters with flaws. Otohime's are made very obvious, whereas we don't learn about Tiger's until his death. I think your reaction to her in this episode is shared by many (but not all) fans, and I also think that is intentional on the part of Oda. Like you said, this is a very complex issue. I am a very big fan of the way Oda explores this issue through the characters of Fisher Tiger and Otohime. They have the same goal, but very different approaches, and they both complement and compete with each other at the same time. Oda likes to present multiple viewpoints when he explores the theme of an arc, and often leaves the discussion without definitively concluding that one side is in the right, and as a longtime fan I view Fishman Island as the primary example of this. You both are excellent reactors when it comes to discussing literary themes, and I very much appreciate your nuanced and detailed discussion of the arc so far! Keep up the amazing work!

SomeoneElse

It's probably not necessary to mention this, but signing the forms doesn't mean they all have to go and live on the surface immediately. It's a step toward cooperation with the World Government and rights by law They are getting enslaved NOW. It happens already.

Artemis

Wow there are a lot of interesting and deep compelling arguments and discussions in this arc already. Love to see it🙂 I think personally the main take away that I gather from this is Otohime is a fundamentally flawed character, her approach to achieving equality amongst humans and fishman has its shortcomings for sure and that is an intentional thing written by oda. We are not supposed to look at this as her defining excellence in leadership qualities like a white knight. We are only supposed to understand that what she is attemping to achieve is just to ambitious of a goal to achieve harmony in a world shackled by its tolatoraion control, and ultimately, she failed. If you try and defend that, then you are clearly not paying attention to the story. What we understand is Otohime aimed to break the cycle of hatred and prejudice by fostering understanding and empathy between races, believing this was essential for true and lasting peace. How ever, her approach was overly idealistic as some have commented in here and naive, particularly considering the deep-seated hatred and prejudice against Fish-Men. Her efforts focused too much on long-term goals and not enough on addressing the immediate threats and discrimination faced by Fish-Men. Also, she tried to sought out change within a system inherently biased against Fish-Men and her efforts were ultimately futile because of the existing power structures in place. Despite her failures, there was an admirable quality about what she tried to achieve, so that being said, her vision for racial harmony and her unwavering commitment of forgiveness had a MASSIVE impact on the people that knew her, and many were influenced by her idealogy. The main point of belief was to present the notion that not all humans are malicious and that is something Jimbie would take with him as he joined luffy in the Paramount war. I am going to leave it with that as there is more to this story, so keep watching until the full flashback and then you will get a broader picture. But really, this arc is just so good and there is so much nuance to the writing of the characters at this point in oda's story. When things are more contentious like this and it bolsters deeper conversation amongst viewers, you know its really gripping and engaging. Not just "turn your brain off" shonen stuff.

Artemis

Probably the most accurate analysis here.

Artemis

You clearly are missing the whole point @fabulous. Your supposed to feel some what divisive against her reasonings of achieving equality but its not meant to make you hate the character or the writing. Its a constrast with Fisher Tiger's action approach Vs cooperation and ultimatly both of their idealogies combine together and become major influence for those that want to pass on their beliefs. They are both historic figures in the world though because of what they tried to achieve.

Mo za

When a captain becomes a warlord their crimes and their crew's crime is kinda forgiven that's what I understood from this flash back, I could be wrong but I don't think jinbe had a choice to release him or not it's either all or non kinda thing.

Cheddah Slammer

Funny because she has parallels to real world historical leaders. In this case Martian Luther King Junior.

Cheddah Slammer

I just think I have a different look at Otohime. For one when I first watched this I was all for her, and all against the populace of Fishman island. They think their safe down their at the bottom of the sea, and just accept the fact that some of them will be captured by stronger pirates. So the threat that you think she doesn't know is all to real. Just think that the populace was more Naive that their going to be safe. Were I pictured Otohime as more of a realist, lets try to get protection, and go somewhere safer. Remember they are at the bottleneck of were all Pirates go if they want to go to the New World.

Artemis

Actually he has, but thats all oda wants to show us now.

Matthew Gilroy

We're talking about what the show has shown us up to this point

boredbeck

Otohime is an idealist, Tiger is a realist...and it's natural to see the realist better. "Optimists are the reason planes are invented, and Pessimists invented the parachute." Otohime really is naive, Carson is right about the comparison regarding the twitter activists lol.

Tony

I don't think Kokoro felt that way in Water 7, otherwise it wouldn't make sense as to why Tom is able to just walk freely for years and people not ever talking about his race. It could've happened but it's never implied in the story for water 7

tavuntu

"Maybe they have reasons to take their signatures back"... yes, and that is the whole point. They don't see the purpose of the signatures is for a greater good and if they want it back because of some humans messed with them, they're totally missing the point. And this is the whole point of the fish man arc (making peace with humans because of the GOOD humans). So yup, the Queen's reaction was totally justifiable in the context that Oda is setting up.
