One Piece Discussion 9 Fishman Island Saga Podcast

nofie

I was looking on the yt channel if the pod was uploaded yet, and lo and behold, I get this notification. HYPE🙂‍↕️

Artemis

Wow that was fast.

Sanji Joestar

Great discussion and many good talking points.

Sanji Joestar

Pluton was called a Warship back in Water Seven so you knew that.

Matthew Gilroy

Agreed. Around 26:00. Arlong would never want to destroy Fishman Island. And the thing with Hachi talking to Hordy is thematically impactful because it ties into the theme of generations. Hachi the OG is trying to persuade the younger generation (the new FIshman pirates). Definitely ties in with Oda's main messaging

Iris Mit

hard agree on what y'all said about arlong/hordy, i think there is a version of fmi that i would have liked more where someone like arlong could have been the villain, but for the message oda decided to express with this arc this was the best option

Sanji Joestar

The concert and party at the end truly shines when the mermaids/merfolk are in their elements while our group are given air pockets so I do agree that the water environment gets lessened a bit. Tho Neptune did mention their island is also a checkpoint for people who want to cross over so i get the accomodation to non water beings.

Sanji Joestar

Sanji's character can be a bit rough to follow especially since Thriller Bark. I think that and FMI are his most egregious thus far. However his reactions towards Jinbe or in Enies Lobby shouldn't be mistaken with his 'perv' persona. That's a confusion that comes up often and muddies the water for what's actually happening in my opinion.(Kinda blame Oda for that flanderization) Against Kalifa for example he mentioned it's a lesson drilled into him as a kid to not kick women, while the situation with Jinbe could have happened with any other strawhat, it happened with Usopp and Franky for example on the sea train. This time it was more deeply personal since he knew Nami's story from Nojiko. But yeah overall it's just hit or miss.

Sanji Joestar

They know. That's why they said it'd require Arlong to be completely deconstructed through either an unknoxn factor or drugs which is a weaker argument.

Albanese

I stand with Lindsay on the Arlong thing

myridiann

Btw toei does a bit dirty on sanji on anime. There was a huge discussions on twitter especially from new ongoing episodes. Toei animation kinda over extend his perviness. / good discussions <3

Arkham

Carson has a great point of FI not being totally submerged. I think it’s more of a writing convenience, so Oda doesn’t have to constantly worry about the arc gimmick, but there might be something to the idea that these people don’t really belong down here. They belong under the sun. Also, if the Fishman District where Hordy and such hail from is underwater, that dark and submerged district would be a thematic contrast to the bright, airy streets and palace.

Zoodinger

Wow nice Chopper impression at 1:18:52

Sanji Joestar

Yup They can breathe underwater, the bubble and air itself isn't something they need. It's for others. The island is at a position where it's for people to cross over. Otohime also mentioned they had to settle for here because it's the only place where humans can't directly get them WHILE they have 'fake' sunlight. But if it was a better world they wouldn't even need to go that far down to begin with

Albanese

The fact that at this point some members of the crew are reduced to their most basic core to the point that as you said Sanji seems like a caricature of himself is something I felt too, a lot

Sonicluis

I love the in-depth discussion of the Arlong and I love it. But I do it oda is dam if you do and dam if you don’t. If you use arlong than we get the people who say his recycling villains. In Carson version I can easily see arlong being a top 5 one piece villain which is crazy because hody is top 3 worst villains. Not gonna lie y’all were cooking at the end with the planets. And theory, that’s what I live for.

Arkham

My counterpoint to Arlong vs Hordy is that it fundamentally changes some of the broader themes of the arc beyond the more obvious civil rights allegory. If Luffy knows the bad guy, if he’s in any way personally invested, you can no longer have this message about heroes and hate. Luffy is free of hate and saves countries because of his positive relationship with a friend, if he has a vendetta then he’s no longer a savior. Not to mention, having Arlong around naturally causes the arc to focus on Nami and now is not really the time for that. Let alone how the rest of the crew (Sanji) would inevitably react to seeing the guy. It would turn the SHs into exactly what fishmen fear. All that said, I do think we’ll be seeing Arlong again and I expect it to be a quiet, sad thing.

Krymsunn

Yall always stay cooking 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳👩‍🍳👩‍🍳, love the content

Iris Mit

i think the Jinbe thing kinda gets grouped in with the other stuff cause it's him talking for/over Nami (which in this instance probably wasn't about her being a woman but it still rubs people extra wrong compared to him doing it with one of the guys)

Sanji Joestar

Kinda yes he's always very emotional about everything but atleast that side of the conversation gets addressed before we get to a proper forgiveness as Nami tells Sanji to let it go and that's it's her say He sees her as family and got defensive for her. And we later get an duo fight between Sanji and Jinbe facing Wadatsumi as a sign of closure on that side. It's just always very misrepresented as Sanji just being a 'simp' which is just not the point.

pedro I.S

I Never saw the naming of the weapons being in order. Those 3 names are the only roman gods Who have also named radioactive elements, which makes sense considering we are talking about weapons.

pedro I.S

In case anyone is wondering. Yes there is an element called neptunium

L.Joy

Loved this! Very glad you guys ended up doing this podcast, it'll make it easier to cite all your predictions in the future.

Arkham

Big piece of advice here, you need to be very careful with the youtube comments on this one. Also, those cover stories are calling your name haha

SwaggyMan

Is it just me or does it now say the video no longer exists? I was listening to it, had to pause, and when I came back it said that

idziman

Lot of great discussion in this one! It gets me excited to hear what your thoughts are on the rest of the timeskip moving forward! Now all I need is the cover story reactions and my hype will be maxxed!!

Matthew Gilroy

At least Sanji has a reason for the way he's acting being on that island for 2 years. What's Zoro fanboy's excuses for Zoro being a caricature of himself and just "Cool swordsman"😂💀

Vince

I would love a few ranking videos from you guys I think that would be cool. A few ideas, ranking most absurd body types of one piece, best outfits, reactions to the cover stories would be cool. Now is also where the movies are worth watching when you’re out of spoiler range for them Film Z, Gold, Stampede, Red

Matthew Gilroy

Bro I've had enough of this misinformation. It's only in the newest arc and other filler material. Toei does wonders for Sanji other times too

Matthew Gilroy

The only things Boldcast has to do for now are Next arc -> Film Z Simple

Sanji Joestar

It's not misinformation tho. It's not 'only in the recent arc' either. There's multiple examples of stuff relating to Sanji that are either made up, changed or stretched out for no reason in the anime. And yes it happens with other characters too sometimes but his case is more egregious because he fits in many different scenarios as a character and can be exploited more often as runtime for that. One example would be in Thriller Bark how he rejected Lola even tho in the manga he's the only one who didn't respond. Which misrepresents how he interacts with women who aren't ''conventionally'' attractive. Another example would be how he's shown fighting the newkamas in the anime when in the manga there's no such thing. His training, in broad strokes, consisting of stealing the recipe and escaping them. The anime ignores his character traits and makes him fight them because it 'looks cool'. But is more harmful to the character. Also in FMI it was easy to tell when the anime just padded his scenes. When he saw his blood donators, he started jumping around freaked out like he was possesed. That too was added. And later they basically did a repeat of that scene. When all he actually did was get shocked and we moved on. And there's examples later on. So acting like it suddenly started recently is misleading. It's a stream of stuff that keeps piling up until it becomes a more bothersome trend. Like yes, some elements are still there from the manga, but others are just blown out of proportion and often used in the wrong frame, diverting from the focus of a scene more often than not.

Bun_s_Life

1. Leaving a strategic comment to come back here and make a list of what I think would be an interesting topic to make a tier podcast about (have more than one idea already, so I'm gonna need some time to sum it up). 2. You've finished filming the podcast at ~1.30am. I finished watching it at ~1.30am. The unexpected irony.

Jack Shadow

This is a cool idea in comparison to SH and Planets. Also, I'm interested in all your podcasts related to your One Piece content, including character rankings, design rankings, etc.

Oussama Essamadi

Fruitful discussion, this is why I enjoy watching you guys, lots of nails hit during this one.

Capitano

I don't get the "Oda already used that with the Ark Maxim in Skypiea" take. I don't see how they're the same or why there only can/should be one epic big ship in this story about pirates.

BOLDcast

It’s the type of ship being an Ark, not just it being a “big ship” There are cultural connotations and use cases for each type of ship, so to re use them when there are so many to choose from I think gives us insight into his thought process

YetiCoolBrother

...he's not a caricature of himself? Zoro was just chillin this arc, he 1-shot the arc boss early, there was not alot for him to do really. He has better moments next arc & going forward.

YetiCoolBrother

In regards to Madam Shirley, I'm gonna go ahead and just drop this theory on yall because the community produced it pretty much immediately after Fishman Island was finished in the manga back in the day: Fishman Island is 10k leagues under the sea in an alcove in the Red Line. The Holy Land Mariejois where the Celestial Dragons live is 10k leagues above the sea on top of the Red Line, directly above where Fishman Island is. So the immediate theory was that at some point, likely towards the end of the story, Luffy will destroy The Holy Land sending it down through the Red Line all the way to the bottom of the sea thus destroying Fishman Island in the process. How exactly he will do that we don't know (like still to this day, I'm manga-current and I still could not tell you) but this was/is the thinking of the community.

YetiCoolBrother

Also, I can totally understand the "it should've been Arlong" folks but I've always been firmly in the Hody camp because it would've muddied the themes Oda was going for in this arc and I think FI is one of the strongest arcs in the story thematically largely because Oda was laser-focused on it. Dealing with racism & discrimination and the legacy and trauma of it while also trying to be optimistic about the future to not pass on hatred to the next generation, but simultaneously showing that the prejudice is still a very real thing that is systemic and detrimental to them and their culture & they should be aware of that, while at the same time showing that not every Human is like that, is a very complicated & sensitive topic to really broach in a Shounen manga and I think Oda did as good of a job as possible. It took multiple arcs of set up & in the end he stuck the landing and I give him the utmost credit and respect and admiration for it, if he was a lesser writer this whole thing could've come across VERY tone-deaf & cringe & damn near offensive.

Elijah Hernandez

To me, Hody is a good example of character who only works when your only thinking in terms of themes and symbolism and not what makes for an actually interesting character. It's why I think his "motivations" being essentially nothing, can be justified through the idea that ties into the broader themes of hate being irrational and lacking substance, but it makes for a super one dimensional and uninteresting antagonist.
