A few episodes ago, you guys talked about how we could have explored the G5 dynamics before they got betrayed to at least feel that reveal. However I'd like to present a different perspective on that again. Very early on, Smoker dismisses the possibility of it being any of his 'meathead' lackeys and that it must be someone besides him and Tashigi. That reduces the pool of possibility so much that whoever is introduced next gotta be the culprit. Just like how evident the ''master'' 's intentions ate So what's the real point here? Well, looking at Brownbeard and his men, the ex prisoners, the children and now the G5 soldiers, the emphasis is less about the betrayal itself but the reaction of those who got fooled. They lacked the mental/ physical strength to do things on their own and a figure appeared and helped them ( through deception, lies and manipulation ). It's almost cult-like to some degree. And obviously the first step is complete denial and rejection of that possibility until it hits them right in the face ( quite literally with Brownbeard ).

Brownbeard already said that the dragons the SHs have encountered are "artificial life-forms" that Vegapunk made. It's probably some gene editing stuff like Lindsay suggested.
