Sanji Joestar

The secret escape route is not a secret The Navy captured Doflamingo from the underground port and lifted him up That's where he landed so they already know about that Ex Toys Navy soldiers would probably report it anyway

Sanji Joestar

'' These people love drama '' 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Ariix

This is why Bartolomeo hates the people of Dressrosa and made fun of them from the start, that's my goat fr

Bun_s_Life

I believe it was 3 days before, Fujitora said he rolled the dice 3 times in Mugiwara's favor and today Tsuru-san rolled it for the 4th time

Artemis

One piece unfortantly is stuck in the past for sure with these kinds of tropes. Its influenced by Akira's style and pacing of relegating background characters to just reacting frantically to certain events or actions as opposed to serving as fully realized individuals with complex traits, personalities and distinct idea's. Character depth for the main cast has notably improved in the later stages of One Piece, but there always remains a tendency to use non-essential background characters as mere narrative tools, exhibiting unrealistically simplistic reactions to force plot progression. That is something I don't think oda will ever break away from sadly. So seeing randoms or bystander characters with an IQ lvl of a toddler is a commen thing in these classic shonens. Modern stories have deffinitly moved away from this. This is why the special One piece fan letter directed by Megumi Ishitani, really surprised audiences because it effectively breaks from the conventional older shonen tropes by offering a grounded, intimate perspective on even bystander characters. The best takeaway I think is that we've simply learned to accept that broad background reactions are a classic One Piece convention. The series makes that trade-off worthwhile because the characters who actually drive the story are deeply complex, intelligent, and incredibly well-developed individuals.

Oussama Essamadi

I guess Dressrosa people learned to not trust a seemingly stranger pirate who just happened to save them from their 'ruthless' ruler.

Arkham

Ultimately, this is why I don’t like Rebecca. I feel like every arc Luffy inspires someone to courage and hope, even if they don’t get there immediately. Rebecca refuses to stand up what she believes in to the very last and Luffy has to DRAG her ass to what’s right. My queen Vivi would never.

Sanji Joestar

'' she refuses to stand up for what she believes in to the very last '' is pretty much disingenuous no? She JUST received the letter that morning and is still thinking about it while they have a ceremony incoming. If anything this is very similar to Vivi having to take a while to think about her decision to go with the crew or not( the whole night and the next morning). And the crew had to give her an ultimatum to decide because they have to leave. Except unlike with Vivi, the letter and ultimatum happened almost immediately and she still said she'd go.

Kyouki

That’s because the real princess this arc is Law 😂

C

This is such an absurd take to have. I won't write it out because spoilers, but you KNOW what happens right? And if you don't then why would you write out a short essay about something you don't know anything about

Fabulous

Unpopular opinion but I don’t like Rebecca at all.

Matthew Gilroy

Vivi is overrated Rebecca is underrated Shirahoshi is underrated and most important given Fishman Island lore and that she is Posideon. The "promised time". "Two soverigns must meet". Joyboy's apology.

Matthew Gilroy

Artemis it's the opposite bro. What C said. Also, "Character depth for the main cast has notably improved"😂 Ah yes, 'Mothering Mode' Nami, 'Dark Humour' Robin, 'Cute Merch' Chopper, 'Cutting Things' Zoro. These strawhats have been watered down to these things and were much better pre-timeskip. Props to Dressrosa for giving MAJOR characterisation and focus for Usopp, and Franky being a badass. Brook we just haven't seen as much, and Sanji continues to be the goat. Non-strawhat side characters were dominating popularity polls at the time (although some strawhats were still popular for whatever reason, like Nami)

Matthew Gilroy

Vice Admirals have been absolute frauds this arc. Bastille one-shotted by Sabo. And even worse, Maynard offscreened by Barto. Starting to look like bums now. Stark contrast to Vergo and Smoker the arc prior

Adam Vialpando

Honestly, aside from Garp Vice-Admirals have seemed like frauds from the beginning. They made a big deal of having them at a buster call. but aside from Kuzan at Ohara none of them really do anything there. They had okay showings at Marineford, but even then many were only marginally better than the New World captains. They mostly stood around, clashed some swords, or provided assists to the actual MVPs the Admirals. Hell, Smoker somehow seems lamer after becoming Vice-Admiral despite apparently being stronger. I'm sure that's unrelated but it's funny to think about.

C

You also have a bad take on the post time skip characterizations of the strawhats. I think the "Cute Merch" Chopper take is the most reductive and shallow take that I see as a litmus test if people are paying attention to the story or not. Won't really get into it since it is spoilers, but if you look at punk hazard alone that is the first time that Chopper exercised his will onto the group. If you contrast this with him in Skypiea it's quite clear the development his character has gone through. Chopper has had one of the most complete character arcs in the story from prets that has continued onto post ts. People who just see his more traditionally cuter design in the postts and can't look past it to complain about shallow characterization are ironically some of the most shallow fans of the story.

Matthew Gilroy

I don't know man. Vices were lowkey cooking pre-timeskip. We had to flee Enies and that one dude even rusted Zoro's sword. Luffy, even at Marineford, was not able to beat a Captain Smoker who wasn't a VA at the time. Can agree that Smoker "seems" weaker as a VA, but of course he's stronger than he was pre-timeskip, he's just going against powerful foes.

Artemis

To clarify, by "main cast," I’m not referring strictly to the Straw Hat crew. I’m referring to the expanded ensemble of pivotal characters that has grown significantly since the time skip. Also, you completely glossed over my initial point of non-essential background characters being used as narrative tools.

Annie

I'm SO excited for 746 hehehe

Szonin

Also the landscape changed quite a bit after what Pika did.

Matthew Gilroy

C, what a pathetic example. Are your standards that low? "Chopper developed within a 500 episode span"😂🤣 Dressrosa Usopp is what you call good focus and characterisation of a Strawhat.

C

Matthew, It's just a small example to illustrate how much his character has changed over the course of the series. Characterization isn't stuff that happens in a big moment like in Dressrosa with Ussop. That's what we call a character moment. Characterization is ever present. It is what affects the way characters interact with the world around them.

Adam Vialpando

But the thing about Enies is that none of the VCs actually did anything to warrant their presence, much less their threat level. Also the dude who rusted Zoro's sword was just a Captain. In fact, considering all the Buster Calls do is shell an island and usually does not involve any marines going ashore they could just send any marine officer and achieve the same result. Heck, the captains were the real backbone of the Buster Call. Also it's hard to judge Smoker's strength against Luffy pre-timeskip because his logia fruit ensures he will always have the advantage. Though I agree he is definitely way stronger in Punk Hazard. I just find it funny that he seems to be less of a threat despite training and getting promoted.
