wow 47 min is crazy !! thank you

Dreamknight942

Big mom’s backstory is so well done, eating mother Caramel and the kids is wild

Aidan

Love when the discussion is long

ImZeaT

Them: This is my favorite arc so far, I don't know how this can be topped! Me (knowing what's to come): Hmm... Yes, yes, I agree... 😈😁🔥

Richie the Lion

Lindsey is on the roll with predictions in this arc.

idziman

That's a length you love to see!!

Skele

Surprised no one's said what croquembouche actually means

Monkey D.offy Lucci

CP0 went to Dressrosa and literally said ‘FAKE NEWS’ about Doflamingo’s resignation.

Envyus

You have actually met John Giant a few times.

UsoppEnjoyer

There’s also a popular fan theory that Big Mom subconsciously uses Conqueror’s Haki here to paralyze Caramel and the kids which explains why at least one or two of them didn’t run when they saw her begin eating people. That or she simply ate too fast, unable to distinguish the Semla and the hands giving it to her. Either way definitely creepy and an amazing almost grimm brother’s-esque backstory.

Bar Ban

I feel like the 66 from germa ties in with big mom 6 birthday for that reference to 666. Where big mom represents the supernatural evil a devil disguised as a human amongst the “lambs” which is why the school is called that and then the human evil which is Judge. The human evil tries to make a pact with the supernatural evil as we’ve seen in many different stories. Then the devil shows his fangs after using honeyed words to make you do pacts and takes you for everything you’re worth then consuming your soul and “flesh” like perospero said in the earlier episode.

Sakarael

The amount of media literacy you guys have compared to the average One Piece fan is actually crazy. That discussion was just as peak as this episode!

Fabulous

Epic discussion!

Sanji Joestar

100% convinced the spectacle Carmel and the world government put up back in the day even included her manipulating the climate to first make it rain then only make the sun shine down on her alone!

Sanji Joestar

Isabella who ??? The WG truly has no limits when it comes to exploiting, enslaving and grooming unfortunate people.

Sanji Joestar

Carson hit it on the nail This is the first real backstory that touches on so many different elements that are growing in the background.

A

Let’s go

Sanji Joestar

Since I speak french I forgot it's not as obvious to everyone The name is quite old but it's formed of the words ''Croque'', ''En'' And ''Bouche'' as far as I know. Crunch/In/Mouth 😭 Basically it sounds like "Crunchy in Mouth"

Sanji Joestar

The amount you guys predicted from a glimpse of the Mother Carmel picture kinda blew us all away The picture was barely visible and you picked up the nun outfit and all the speculation that followed. The Live Action did give away 'some' context but even still the speculations were off the charts, i was shocked lol 💯👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Sanji Joestar

Yeah the anime added that effect but it does make a lot of sense

Sanji Joestar

I did have my own theory on what happened with the devil fruit when this chapter dropped. I guess we'll see.

100Rainy

Oda was in his bag this arc no doubt. So much brilliant writing around Big Mom and yet some fans always fixate on one or two of her flaws and call her a trash-tier meme villain I really can't stand it lol, she's genuinely one of the best characters in the whole story man

100Rainy

The way the little croquembouche bites got more human-sized as Linlin kept eating...freaking cold chills every time

Oussama Essamadi

“What a lovely birthday” the narrator is in on it and I can’t be convinced otherwise.

SomeoneElse

Tears blurred her eyes and the Semla she was eating got bigger. Rest in pieces 😭☀️ The way you guys both connected a lot of dots in this episode was really great. You guys belong in this fandom! You will have a lot of fun once you're caught up with all the theories and speculation.

SomeoneElse

21:36 was HILARIOUS. The relief you guys felt seeing the kids and then "NO"

Sanji Joestar

At 14:05 i love the sliiiight dark aura emanating from her in the flashback execution. It's barely noticeable but when you see it you see it

Sanji Joestar

By the way John Giant is the first giant we see in the story Right after Arlong Park we see him when the Navy is doing their salute. But because of perspective and close-up shots we couldn't see his actual size. He was also involved during Marineford. He was the giant that clashed blades with Whitebeard before he tilted the whole island.

DaniP

Eating kids as they fly into heaven as funny animated hearts as low-key haki sounds are put into effect, waking up to broken clothes/chairs/tables…. Yh I think it’s better her memory is suppressed/clouded tbh

Artemis

Carson acknowledging oda's genius is all i wanted to hear.

ideo

THANK YOU CARSON THIS BACKSTORY IS PEEEAAAAAK

Artemis

You mean oda.

Ariix

Linlin's backstory is so good because everything just CLICKS. The way all her current traits are shown to have come from her best days in her childhood, the way everything is left vague enough to be creepy but clear enough to be convincing. Even other characters like Mother Carmel; the reason why the kids were so important to her, why she always prioritized looking good and keeping trust in front of them (instead of raising them properly with consequences), it all makes sense once we get the reveal.

ImZeaT

@ednapls who?

Thomas Hommel

couldnt disagree more but yeah, everybody has a different taste. especially with this story being so good, i was so disappointed with the later conclusions

Matthew Gilroy

It is clear that the main themes of One Piece are that of dreams and reality. Also, the One Piece world DIRECTLY reflects our own, based on one simple fact - Reality is harsh. Let me break this down: It is interesting if you notice that the World Government have been the MAIN cause of the Antagonists' current state in the two most recent arcs. Doflamingo wanted to tear down the world ruled by the World Government. He wanted to destroy it, destroy the world created 800 years ago, and live in the brand new world created in the aftermath. At the end of the day, Doflamingo wanted to be free, free from the Celestial Dragons' oppressive rule. As for Big Mom, her inherited will and dream is from that of the filthy snake Mother Carmel. Her dream is that of freedom. To unite all the races. To tear down the barriers of oppression and make all the races free. It has beautiful thematic ties to Fishman Island. But as we know, the World Government doesn't want the many races of the world to live in harmony. We've seen how they get human traffickers to hunt down rare species like the Fishman and sell them at Human Auction houses, or simply bring them to Celestial Dragons to use them as slaves how they please. Even before the World Government's official creation, we've seen how one of their soon-to-be families, the previous rulers of Dressrosa - the Donquixote - treated the Tontatta once they found out their existence. They oppressed them and treated them like slaves. Big Mom's dream is quite tragic, and Mother Carmel does not believe in it. Mother Carmel is rooted in reality. Shs understands the harsh reality of our world, and accepts it. She practices oppresion, and she herself is oppressed under the reality created by the World Government. I may be painting the World Government as evil, but I will come at it from an Attack on Titan perspective. We don't necessarily know the MORALITY of the situation upon which the World Government was created 800 years ago. Why would all these kingdoms agree to want to ally against the one Ancient Kingdom? Was the Ancient Kingdom the evil one? We know the Ancient Weapons are powerful, particularly Poseidon. Were the Ancient Kingdom going to use these Ancient weapons in a potentially dangerous way? Everything is still so morally ambiguous regarding the creation of the current world 800 years ago. What we do know is that the current world created by the World Government is oppressive. And it's oppressed some of our favourite antagonists. To re-iterate my main point, it is clear that the main themes of One Piece are that of Dreams and Reality. By the end of the series, will the strength of dreams be able to overcome our harsh reality? Or is it foolish to dream while one is awake? To repeat again, the One Piece world is very similar to our own world based on one simple fact - Reality is harsh. It will be interesting to see how Oda ends this whole thing.

A

Yeah this was also peak for me as well but I think we’re in the minority

A

Good thumbnail candidates in this one

Dancing Viru

I felt those tears too Carlson, when the chapter came out... the giveaway were the occasional, human-sized "croquenbouche"....because there were no human-sized ones on the plate....that was just the visual interpretation of what Linlin thought she was eating, during her crave frenzy... (as a way to censor it for children of course)

Szonin

47 minutes?? I am strapped in.

Matthew Gilroy

37:26. Yes. The World Government did not just erase different races' histories in the past, but are also trying to erase their cultures in the present

Matthew Gilroy

The under-appreciated backstories are actually the best ones. Fisher Tiger and Otohime Kalgara and Noland Rebecca and Kyros Masterful thematics and writing. That actually embody all the themes of One Piece as a story, most of which are Real-life themes. But of course the average fan doesn't care. Big Mom's is of a similar vein. Not quite on the same level of quality as the ones listed above, but Oda's writing approach is the same, as in it's not a more standard shonen tragedy like Robin's, but instead presents very interesting ideas, messages, and themes. It demands the audience to pick their brains and engage with the material on a subtextual level.

Szonin

While this was an insane flashback I do like some others more. Sanji's new backstory and Law's flashback are just more emotional for me.

Szonin

must be his observation haki

Bootyman555

There will be more backstories that you like if you like this one

BTImelesS

My god even when you are saying something correct you are toxic. "the average fan doesn't care". Seriously, I'm sure there is grass somewhere outside your basement, go touch it.

Combatnoodlez

As a swede these 2 episodes about the Semla is so funny. they have been a thing here for centuries and they are still very popular today. we have a day called fettisdagen or fat Tuesday where the whole country eats semlas. Bakeries and cafe's compete to win the best semla of the year for each city 😂. Anyway i don't think this has been talked about or asked about in the SBS but im pretty sure Oda did some research into our history here. one specific story comes to mind. we had a king called Adolf Frederick who especially loved semlas. one day he had a huge feast and ate an extraordinary amount of food. for dessert he ate semlas. in fact he went into a "semla craze" and ate 14 of them and then died, earning the nickname "the king who ate himself to death" I don't know if Oda took inspiration from this event but i'd say its more than likely and if so i find it really interesting how Oda took this real life death by gluttony or i guess death by semla and turned into Big Moms backstory and making it even more sinister and gluttonous😂

Edword

Yeah lindsey has been locked in the whole arc

Sanji Joestar

Idk if it's a coincidence but Linlin's backstory starts on Chapter 866, titled '' Natural Born Destroyer ''

Samrathpal Singh Thind

John giant is the vice admiral who got one punched by whitebeard during marineford

Skele

Everyone else was blind sided by big moms backstory but they wouldve called weeks ahead if it had been real time drops

Mo za

Mother caramel reminds me of Mother Theresa

JOSHUA BOULDIN

Now every time I watch this episode I imagine the kids at the teaparty screaming there lines in a "please don't" tone. Like "Please don't, we're friends aren't we!"

charlie

amazing discussion. It's funny because John Giant is the first giant shown in the story but it's impossible to tell that he is a giant he is shown in episode 45

Matthew Gilroy

Relax. You sound like I pulled an Araki and murdered your pet dog

Matthew Gilroy

I'm not being toxic. It's a known fact. The average fan loves Lucci and calls Moria trash. Even though Lucci's backstory is Oda at his most shoddy, while Moria as a character is genius, representing the themes of willpower and what it looks like when someone loses it. The same is true for Hordy Jones, even though Hordy represents the effect Racism can have. It can consume the targeted with hatred and rage, even if they themselves have not been affected personally. A similar theme to the Attack on Titan Marleyans, but for some reason the average One Piece fan calls Hordy Jones garbage. "Skypeia Skippers" are also a very common breed. To turn our attention to Whole Cake, Big Mom is a hated villain. Many fans hate the character. Many fans hate upcoming antagonists too. All the examples I listed have one thing in common. They have subtextual writing that brings in real-world themes, that for some reason the average fan does not care about, or labels "trash". Probably due to reading comprehension reasons, or that some fans simply care about Power Fantasy over relatability. You can't argue against what I'm saying. This is objective evidence I think I made a comment at the start of this whole saga that Big Mom and another antagonist are a test by Oda on the audience's reading comprehension, and that most fans failed the test. The comment got a lot of likes. So don't spout nonsense and claim what I'm saying is toxic. What I'm saying is honest. Sorry you couldn't handle my honesty in critiquing the anime and manga community

Monkey bing bong

I do really like the implications. It's a great way to write something truly horrible without making it explicit.

Suppy

Deff top 5 backstories, so much lore too

Leighton

There have been some great reveals and twists up to this point, but Big Mom eating everyone was probably the first time I was legit shocked by OP…let out an audible “Holy shit!”

Alex Recorde

The lightning when Carmel was saving the giants from execution was probably her power too, just like Big mom has zeus today. I think is worth mentioning this since you 2 talked about being fate or something

Christopher Charles scott

This story is so tragic that I always thought that they ran away cause she was to hard to deal with and they distracted her with food to run away. I never thought she would eat them damn. This arc was so good that I watched it really fast as well.

BOLDcast

What about me!!? IM LITERALLY THE ONE WHO GUESSED THIS STUFF

Ty

Pudding wiped our memories

Juan Sebastian Mercado

I love this discussions, the things you're talking about makes me so excited for the rest of the series

Chase Turman

Also note that the first time she's introduced in the ark shes going on a rampage over the same desert Caramel and the kids gave her and kills her son in the process.

ivan reyes

I notice it once she started to eat the sweets with both hands were before she would use one hand per piece. That was a small clue to know what she did.

BashCat

I thought those last couple seemed a lot bigger than the rest when she is eating

David P

I’ll be honest Carson. You have been on top of your game lately. It’s such a treat to see you enjoy, analyze and predict all this stuff !

BTImelesS

"You can't argue against what I'm saying. This is objective evidence". Is it? You 've presented 0 evidence, or at best, hearsay that you mention. Again, go touch some grass, it's ok. And again, I called you out not for what you were saying, but for how toxic you are being. I specifically said "even when you are saying something correct". But you ignored that didn't you? Your argument was that you are not being toxic because "it's a known fact"? Get off the internet, get off the twitter and reddit communities and you 'll meet fans that are not as toxic as online fans, I can promise you that. You think if you go into a con and you see someone dressed as big Mom or Hordy Jones people are going to them telling them how much they suck? Also, hating an empty character as Hordy Jones doesn't meet one hates their writing. You can hate a Nazi as Judge for example and still appreciate the messaging behind a character. BUT THAT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER. You are literally calling out fans and being judgmental in your comment preemptively, that's what makes you toxic. The context of your "arguments" doesn't matter, although you talk in a matter of fact way all the time with again, 0 evidence, just empty statements. But even if you did have the evidence it wouldn't matter, that was the whole point of my comment. So again, take a deep breath, it's going to be ok. Go outside, touch some grass and let others fucking be. You are not the gatekeeper of Oda's work.

Matthew Gilroy

You spent 4 days in your mother's basement to come up with the most nothingburger comment in the history of Mankind. Maybe YOU need to get off your mother's teat and touch some grass.

tavuntu

"What a lovely birthday"... Always gives me chills.

tavuntu

Oh boy, that will be your favorite back story for now but we'll see about that later on :) (I'm up to date with Anime and Manga)

boredbeck

FUN FACT: in the manga, this scene actually had a panel where it zoomed out on the island while Linlin was eating Croquembouche... and there were japanese sound effects for screams of fear. LOL

boredbeck

This discussion is BLOWING ME AWAY on how good it is...theories, the themes, the storytellinfg...some I never even thought of before.
