This fight is seriously one of the best things to happen in One Piece. I remember it being the only time I had ever rooted for Luffy to lose, Katakuri's inclusion is so awesome

Sanji Joestar

Luffy recognizing Pekoms despite the mask might say more about what his Observation Haki tells him now that he's gotten better at it. He did tell Rayleigh he prefers to read the people he meets first. Whereas with Sogeking he wasn't there yet.

Sanji Joestar

Luffy vs Katakuri David vs Goliath, finally concludes! The mutual respect growing between the two was a delight to watch. Mirror World as a concept and execution regarding the two of them was peak too. Love this fight so much.

Edword

The man that never falls down vs The man that always bounces back up.

Sanji Joestar

I know it was mostly for jokes, just in case, Brulee cutting herself with rocks despite the mirrors to break free was added. In the manga we just cut to Luffy looking for her and Pekoms showing up with her tied.

Oussama Essamadi

The mutual respect build with fists and kicks between Luffy and Katakuri is soooo good.

so good

QuasiRNG

It's very clearly Luffy's upgraded Observation Haki that allowed him to see through Pekom's disguise 😂

Katakuri went through a real spiritual journey in this fight huh, didn't even say "Mama" anymore and instead just called her Big Mom. Even low key hoping for her defeat one day, or rather Luffy's victory "You're seeing quite far into the future...!" That quote has always stuck with me for some reason. So damn good. Always pops in my head whenever I think of this arc

100Rainy

It's funny to think Luffy had to unlock such exceptionally rare observation haki just to look past a cheap disguise that most people could figure out 🤣

And so comes the epic conclusion between Rubber vs Mochi, and the verdict is: Rubber WINS~! Rubber always bounces back after all, meanwhile mochi over time can get quite malleable when beaten enough. Pretty accurate analogy for the outcome of this fight tbh

Envyus

He also did recognize Caesar, he just thought he was wrong when Caesar lied that he wasn't himself.

Sanji Joestar

That one's funnier cuz Cesar's disguise was just not a disguise Even his title card had Cesar in bold with a Tiny Gastino Like we can see your face, you just spiked your hair and changed clothes😂

Tony

Katakuri got dat dawgtooth in him

Explain why you think this was a clear win for Luffy? Genuine question. I want to hear an opinion from someone who thought it was.

Matthew Gilroy

Really great moments to end the fight but it never sat right with me that Luffy thought this was an earnest victory. Kind of makes me dislike him here a bit. It kind of disrespects Katakuri which is a shame because Katakuri is such a great character. Luffy fled after he lost to recover his haki, and then Katakuri stabbed himself which was the strongest attack done to him (probably took 90% of his own hp up to that point). Luffy fell first etc (admittedly getting up first). All in all I don't see how this was a clear win for Luffy. I think Oda shouldv'e made this more "clear", really reminding us of all the factors and major stages of this fight at the end, rather than Luffy thinking he won earnestly

This is one of the best fights Luffy has had so far, maybe even THE BEST to be honest. The way Oda wrote the relationship between him and Katakuri, the parallels between their similar powers and the way they care about their crew/family, both are seen as ‘leaders’ and trusted by their respective families, they are practically REFLECTIONS of each other, all while fighting in the MIRROR WORLD. Oh my god, Oda was incredibly inspired during this arc. And the fact that the battle ended in what was basically a ‘draw’ makes it even better. Obviously, as readers, we knew Katakuri probably could’ve won at some point, but his admiration for Luffy’s perseverance throughout the fight felt very genuine and well written, and Luffy wins by getting up and accomplish his goal to leave the mirror world at the promised time, it's just so different from every other fight he had before. I have no complaints, the ending was perfect.

21 episodes since Luffy first punched the mirror in the mirrorworld. Goku vs Frieza was 19 episodes in the original DBZ.

Sanji moment was great. Wish we got to see more of him this arc. He was relegated to a background character in the 2nd half of this arc, unfortunately. One of this 2nd half of the arcs many flaws. Funnily enough, this was the not the arc that made me consider Sanji to be the best written Strawhat. More greatness to come🦵🔥😉. Also, I like the very ending of this arc. It starts to feel like actual stakes again rather than scooby doo where the strawhats thwart over disaster after disaster after disaster from Yonko Big Mom which doesn't feel earned at all. Looking forward to the upcoming eps.

millecamps

because katakuri fell on his back, clearly admitting defeat. luffy won over katakuri. luffy is now strong enough to win against katakuri if they fought again, would he win 100% no, but they are now on similar level

testlunch

I LOVE that Katakuri forced himself back up just to make sure that Luffy would be coming back to see him again one day. So sweet and wholesome lol. And that it was only after Luffy confirmed it that he fell on his back to rest. Like that was when the fight was truly over, when he was sure there would be a next time. The legend of Wool Cap Katakuri is born! He BETTER be wearing that hat next time we see him.

Some fans (myself included) believe that this kiss sealed Sanji's marriage to Pudding. In other words, from this point on, Sanji is a married man. xD

Skele

aint no one think that bro

Skele

Katakuri couldve beat Luffy but after all that fighting and that last declaration he was like "alright you got it lil bro"

Skele

I remember this being a big debate back then, but I think it's clear through the context and writing that Luffy wouldve lost to Katakuri if this was a 1 to 1 match like in a tournament but that's the dragonball z way of thinking. This was a pirate battle where anything goes and the last one standing wins so in that respect Luffy won. Because at the end of the day even if Katakuri could have beat him, he didnt.

I_am_Knowledge

This was the first time I believed he might be able to accomplish his goal cause this victory was heavily earned through pain

To add to millecamps response, this was also a battle of wills and Luffy's will was simply superior. He faced impossible odds, intense physical and verbal adversity from every direction, and his opponent actively tried to crush Luffy's fighting spirit the entire time. Luffy held strong despite all that, and taking such extensive beatings and still coming back to fight is literally a byproduct of his DF powers. But even beyond that Luffy has always been steadfast in his values and beliefs which is what allows him fight as hard and as long as he does in every arc. As for Kat, he had a fair number of hidden insecurities that plagued him for most of his life. Once his layers were peeled back and his true self gradually exposed he began to fight more freely than he ever has before, but in the end he could not match up to the magnitude of Luffy's indomitable will. Katakuri went through many unexpected events in that duel and by the end he was not the same person anymore. His will and life perspective was shaken to its very core in that fight and Kat was ultimately unable to compete with Luffy's unwavering resolve to meet with his crew and save Sanji. So even if he was still physically able to continue, the fact is Kat had no more fight left in him. Luffy was down to keep it going but Kat fell back and was satisfied with this result. That's what makes it Luffy's win.

Sanji and Pudding were made for each other. Whenever they are on screen together there's a normal amount of eyes between them.

theshittycook

To say that the kiss sealed Sanji’s marriage to Pudding is a bit too much. You’re absolutely free to interpret it that way, but at the end of the day, it’s still headcanon. A marriage oath kiss isn’t really meant to be a one-sided act. At the very least, Sanji never truly consented to that level of intimacy. Not to mention, the wedding itself was essentially a staged political performance for both sides rather than a genuine romantic union. Sure, Sanji might have felt flustered or even a little lucky getting kissed by a pretty girl, but the situation is still far more complicated than some people simplify it to be. Within the context of the story, he was emotionally cornered and carrying the burden of protecting everyone around him, rather than entering the situation out of personal desire or mutual romance.

Edword

Ur alone on this one gang

rune

Not Carson pulling the Taz Skylar card! HAHAHAHA I'm already a Sanji girlie even before (what can I say I love well-written characters) but adding Taz there is just diabolical. They really cooked with the casting of the live action.

Off-screen kiss I'm dead

You're really special, you know everything about all the One Piece communities in the world, including those outside your country. You don't deserve "Palmas", you deserve the entire "Tocantins".

Szonin

That was a crazy fight!!
