To me, it doesn't feel like Sanji's brothers are trying to atone in any way, but them saving him feels more like them acknowledging him. They might still think he's a failure, but they at least see now that he's no longer that same "pitiful worm" that would be better off dead

JoyBoy

Personally I never interpreted Judge crying as any kind of redemption. To me, it was more like Oda making him finally face karmic retribution for everything he’s done. Everything he built crumbling around him, It was a real “yeah, fuck you!” moment toward Judge for all of his actions. Without actually needing Luffy or Sanji to beat him up physically.

Vinny C

I feel similarly to Germa saving Sanji as I do about Crocodile helping in Marineford. I don't necessarily think it's supposed to be redemption for the things they've did, or that it means they're good, but I think it's just a bit of moral complexity, and that bad characters can have sympathetic feelings. I also think it's a bit of like a Lord of the Rings thing (Frodo sparing Gollum is what ultimately saves him) where Sanji going out of his way to help Germa when he DID NOT HAVE TO, is what saves him in this moment.

Vinny C

I think it's a pretty strong recurring theme in One Piece that character's will help someone to their own extreme detriment, and that help will end up saving them in the long run.

Michael DeArmas

Mont D'ior isn't really stupid for falling for Germa's fake voice. Nijii was literally copying the Big Mom Pirate guy's voice EXACTLY. When you guys were watching it you thought it was just a bad impression, but he was literally 1 for 1 copying his voice using Germa tech.

Miguel Nobre

I disagree with yall saying Oda trying to do a redemption thing with Judge because that scene of Judge crying is just Oda showing us how pathetic he is,has nothing to do with you feeling sorry for Judge

Cheddah Slammer

Its up to interpretation, but I always thought that Judge was doing this because he felt he owed Sanji for saving him, so now that he saved Sanji their even.

I personally took it as the brothers finally acknowledging Sanji, albeit in a very evasive roundabout way. They picked on Sanji for plenty of horrible and unjustified reasons in the past, but most especially because he was always so weak and timid which their father hated. Now after all that took place in this arc they kinda have no way of disputing just how much he's changed in that regard. Plus everything they always abused him for is what ultimately saved them in the end. So I suppose they're simply showing in their own way that their opinion of Sanji has improved if only slightly. It's certainly not a redemption scene for them imo, but rather just a small bit of closure for Sanji before he finally leaves Germa for good. I will say though, as One Piece is often all about romanticism and poetics you might even take this as a miracle of Sanji's kindness. The only child to most resemble their late mother, a sweet butterfly effect of her act to save at least one child, an unborn Sanji, from their father's experiments. It all led to this moment where his good nature somehow stirred some genuine emotion in these tragically modified kids. It sounds nonsensical but it wouldn't be the first time Sanji's touched the cold hearts of demons. He was introduced after all giving food to a starving ruthless pirate and that same pirate had a profound change of heart not too long after. The themes from the Baratie arc have circled all the way back to this one and I think it's very intentional.

rune

This. I don't know if it's the anime thing because whenever I watch reacts they seem to pick up the same thread of Judge being redeemed whereas I didn't really get that when I first experienced the story via manga.

rune

I agree with all the comments before me about Judge, and just adding that (to me), the Germa's return in this last stretch of the arc is somewhat similar to Chiffon's resolve of paying back the Straw Hats by seeing it through til the end. So them making sure that the SH got away from BM pirates kind of seals the deal of that "payback" for what happened in the wedding. They do not need to be turned into good/better guys, just adding a layer of pride/code. I expect them to have that at least anyway, being warriors and all.

Sanji Joestar

I think you're forgetting a few things here Yes the brothers are modified to be unfeeling and cold HOWEVER We do see signs of them having in some way emotions that transpire, when they saw Nami for example. If they didn't have any they wouldn't care for things like attraction. There's also a scene during the wedding where Yonji looks like he's reaching to grab a berry for a kid bear. Anyway, my point is: if the surgery failed for Sanji due to Sora poisoning herself. Who's to say that sabotage didn't affect the other kids either? What they mostly lack is empathy imo. During the flashback we see the kids constantly wanting validation from Judge and constantly trying to be worthy of his approval. That one scene of them all hugging while Sanji's in his cell is another example. The real problem is still Judge. Whether the kids are fully unfeeling or not, they could be made into better people if their parent guided them that route. But he didn't. He festered horrible behavior and the need to bring Sanji down to look better for their father, in the end hurting Sanji. Even Reiju feels guilty for failing her brother. Here, it's not excusing Sanji's abusers but showing a bit more complexity to the sibling relationships that a parent screwed. Your horrible family doesn't suddenly become your friend and everything's fine, the damage's still done which is why Sanji remembers them horribly. Unlike Reiju. And it's not a way to redeem Judge, because he still isn't the one helping here, the siblings are.

Sanji Joestar

Also yeah Mont D'or didn't fall for a bad impersonation. Niji physically copied Nosstarte's voice. You could see his power on his hand.

귤🍊

I find Oven's reaction to Katakuri being defeated kinda sweet, he was so outraged and angry, like of course, that's his triplet :')

Sanji Joestar

Also I do think their portrayal overall did suffer from the anime as the narrative interest dwindled due to the focus on the super sentai aesthetics for multiple episodes, especially around-after the castle escape.

Extra Crispy

I feel like Germa just has a weird stilted sense of honor tied up into pride and them being strong. Like judge at least feels he’s beholden to his homeland and his ancestors, which is what drove him to creating a massive clone army in the first place. Sanji saved them which created a debt and also challenged their pride as they were saved by a perceived inferior. Later they step in and save Sanji to pay off that debt and also show that they aren’t weak and also kind of as an acknowledgment that Sanji isn’t weak either. Cause germa only respects strength, we see this clearly when judge refused to help Sanji in the past because he was weak. So germa bothering to help the straw hats here is them acknowledging their strength.

Degenerick

the trio don’t actually feel emotion but they finally acknowledge him with some sort of respect

Oussama Essamadi

I definitely comes off as weird and unprompted. I have always seen it as them sticking it up to the Big Mom pirates for trying to pull off one on them instead of actually "caring" about Sanji out of the sudden. Although, the Anime really does create confusion with how it was all directed.

Mister Kap

I think for Sanji’s brothers, it’s more of a middle ground. I forget if it was stated explicitly, but I feel it was implied well enough that the brothers don’t have literally no emotions. Certainly we can see them have pride and arrogance, for example. I think whatever emotion they have for eachother and Reiju, they just extended to include Sanji as well, whether that’s some sort of familial respect/acknowledgement or something else. It’s not even much of a headcannon or anything either, as it’s not like we see them in flashbacks being sociopathically evil to eachother or Reiju. It’s more like they never considered Sanji as an actual family member and so treated him differently than they treated eachother.

SomeoneElse

Germa not feeling emotion has been kinda bullshit from the start. I think the correct interpretation is that they don't feel 'weak' emotion. They weren't afraid of dying at the Tea Party, but they have been enjoying things and laughing about stuff all along. If they were emotionless, they wouldn't have enjoyed bullying Sanji. Maybe Judge ordered them, or maybe they gained respect for Sanji, or they felt that they owed him, or maybe Judge's science was simply not so great. Maybe it's okay to be a bit ambiguous and leave you wondering. The idea that a man like Judge could master the human spirit is a bit lopsided anyway

rune

Yes to all! The anime watchers (I observed) have always this kind of question regarding their emotions and redemption etc. whereas it was a bit more clear cut when the chapters were rolling in the manga (from what was my experience, and what I seen in the chapter threads' discussions). I'd like to think if they can single out that attraction feeling as well and keep that intact because at the end of the day Judge cared about blood and lineage (like HIS blood and lineage) and so procreation was always on the table. Because if not, he could have just Moria-style his way and kept creating ultra enhanced clones.

Sanji Joestar

Yeah, Judge being a failure even in suppressing their feelings only seeing what benefitted and praised him. While Sora tried to save the most she could.

Matthew Gilroy

I agree with Carson. No Oda, I will NOT feel remorse for GERMA😂 for disrespecting the best written Strawhat and Vice Captain AKA Blackleg Sanj🦵🔥 After Whole Cake, I hope a pair of baseball shoes fall from the sky onto their heads. They put them on but are soon arrested and taken to court, where they learn the shoes belonged to real-life Seattle Mariners outfielder, Ichiro Suzuki, originally to be given to disabled children as a gift. Upon hearing the Germa brothers say (truthfully) that the shoes fell from the sky (due to their lack of emotion and common sense😂), the judge flies into a rage, disgusted by the fact that these "heroes" would stoop so low as to steal from children less fortunate than themselves. They are quickly deemed guilty on circumstantial evidence of stealing the shoes and are sent to a juvenile detention facility for six months, Bitchsmoke Judge's objecting to the incarceration falling on deaf ears. However, four months after the Bitchsmoke brother's arrest, the true criminal confesses. The criminal was a professional burglar, who, after stealing the shoes, was afraid that he would be caught because the shoes were so famous, and dropped the shoes down a ventilation shaft on top of a building to get rid of them. When word reached the facility the brothers were being held in that they had been wrongly condemned, they had already been physically and emotionally drained, and they are almost too weak to even move because of a string of strange events that occurred over the course of their incarceration. For instance, Yonji tripped while walking in the field of the facility, (on a hole, and his hand was impaled by a knife that had been buried there sometime before. Yonjj would find out the next day that the knife belonged to another inmate who had been hiding it, presumably to threaten other inmates. As a result of this, the detainee bullied and beat Yonji regularly. His hand wound was finally treated two weeks after the fact, but worms and pus still infested the wound. As a result of this, Yonji fell into a fever and nearly died. Another occurrence is Ichiji urinating on a decrepit wall that crumbled and revealed the skeleton of a long-dead woman. He fled the scene in confusion. And Niji may as well be named Niji "Natsuki Subara in episode 15" Vinsmoke, as he is now an empty husk, not sure how to even function without following orders from Bitchsmoke L. Sludge

"and also show that they aren’t weak and also kind of as an acknowledgment that Sanji isn’t weak either" I agree. Personally I think that plays a big part in it. Less so they've changed their own views, which they presumably can't do. I think it's reinforced by the way they kept putting him down in the end during the escape. Sort of a way to say "hey, yeah, you saved us... but now watch how it's really done" and to also show in their minds "you couldn't have done this without us".

Matthew Gilroy

The Bitchsmoke brothers and Bitchsmoke L. Sludge disrespected the Vice Captain of the future king of pirates. No remorse⛔️🙅🏾‍♂️ If it was towards Cabin Boy I'd allow it

testlunch

Good point. We do kind of take it at face value that Judge's experiment just succeeded 100%. Granted he has all kinds of crazy technology, but if we learned anything from this it's that he is far from a perfect "genius".

testlunch

This is just me, but I think the scenes of Sanji's brothers saving him and having their moments is less meant as a redemption for their character and more for Sanji's emotional journey. They are still his brothers after all, who were fucked with horribly before they even had a chance.

Will.Har310

I think Sanji’s brother’s actions are mainly hollow, and the emotional aspect on Sanji’s end mainly comes from the fact that even if they don’t really care about him, he’s still being protected by and on the side of his brothers for the first time ever.

Jack Shadow

The thing is not the inconsistency of Oda's writing, but the fact that Oda never confirmed that Sanji's brothers have no emotions. Sora took medicine when she was pregnant and was carrying all three children, not just Sanji. Medicine clearly worked mostly on Sanji, but you can't deny there was a chance that medicine worked on all the brothers in some way. This is why Oda showed how Niji and Yonji cared about Junge or Reiju when they were attacked by BM, while Ichiji didn't have any emotions. So you can say that medicine worked on Niji and Yonji, too. Ichiji could be the only one who avoided this effect.

Skele

The ethics and philosophy behind human clones are still up the air. Can you really call them human? is their life really worth it? A person born without feelings, is that a really a human? Oda has shown time and time again with the scientists of One Piece that science progresses at a much faster rate than ethics can keep up. Vegapunk creating cyborgs, Caesar performing gigantification, and Judge genetically modifying life. The scientists of One Piece don't wait for the world to catch up to them they act on their own will.

Krykee

My interpretation of them supporting Sanji and saying their goodbyes was more about the three brothers finally acknowledging him as being strong enough to be their “brother” but as you noted it’s a hollow level of respect. That’s why it’s so hard to believe them helping him out bc all they care about is strength and their image. Reiju however is the perfect foil where the goodbye actually felt genuine and emotions were genuinely there. I think Oda made it this way to show the difference between the ones who constantly put him down and the one (Reiju) who let sanji spread his wings to break out from the abuse and torture of his soulless siblings

Krykee

And also as a viewer it allows you to feel how sanji felt during each of the goodbyes. The brothers were cold, heartless and belittling to the end but there was still the vaguest ounce of respect that sanji felt towards them for reciprocating what sanji did for them at the wedding. With Reiju it was the last push he needed to once again separate from the family, knowing that Reiju is in a much safer position than she was during the wedding and also giving Sanji the reassurance he needed to know that she’ll be okay and that he made the right choice to stay with the Straw Hats

jahschwa

I don't see a reason to attribute kindness to the brothers; at most there's a begrudging respect because at this point Sanji has demonstrated that he's strong (physically; mentally they still think he's weak). The only reason they're helping him is because (a) Judge told them to and (b) getting Luffy out alive is the biggest blow they can deal to Big Mom. Destroying a large part of her fleet is just a bonus; Luffy and the Strawhats getting away is an absolute INSULT. We could also zoom out a little and look at Germa as a commentary or deconstruction of super heroes; because they're so cool, it's so easy to want to side with them. Because they're so close to fitting the tropes, it's so easy to project emotion onto their actions. To be fair, I'm not certain that's what Oda actually intended, but that's my head canon.

Capitano

I don't think Oda ever tried to make us feel sympathy for Judge. I think Sanji's statement towards Judge after he saved them encapsulates that.

EJ

Hindsight 20/20 etc., there is a scene in a future episode (they've prob already seen) where it's clear that Judge does not deserve the redemption lol

C

yeah, it was the same voice actor

Szonin

I think everyone hates Judge and Oda set it up like that.

Rojo

I think I slightly disagree with the comments. I do agree judge isn’t completely redeemed but I do think we are supposed to believe that this event might be the beginning for a change of heart for his character. Not enough that I nor sanji should forgive him, but enough that there is hope he could be a better man some day for reiju.
