Matt

I love the Katakuri and Brulee flashback. Really lets us see into how Katakuri got to his current legend status

aaron zambonini

What a beautiful episode and one of the best OST

Sanji Joestar

Oh you have no idea how much that helps me that you're combining this arc and the next. I'll have to restructure some things, but easy fix!

Sanji Joestar

I can finally gush about how much I love Brulee. Lindsay put it best, she kept hyping Katakuri to support the persona he put into the world, but was still his secret support. Do you remember what Flampée (not Champée😭) said about the ''King of Little Sisters''. That out of 41 brothers, 40 selected her as their favorite. And she's been trying to be Katakuri's n1 too. Now we can infer who Katakuri's n1 Little sister is! Brulee is kinda tragic just through her design, she's constantly wearing a wedding dress and yet she isn't married. And the first thing she points out when we meet her is the scar on her face making her ''unsightly''. This to me implied she never got married because she wasn't 'good enough' and has now to wear this dress like a reminder. That's my headcanon anyway. Flampée's integration was really effective at making us wish for someone, anyone to understand Katakuri. It could have been Pudding for example. But Brulêe fits so perfectly. Her watching over her big bro also explains why she was there when Luffy tried to run away and she got caught again. She was still looking out for him. All the Charlotte siblings shows different dynamics of kids having to become their own 'adults' protecting the younger ones when the actual parent is just unreliable if not abusive sometimes. Heartbreaking stuff all around.

This episode has so many emotional moments. I genuinely think it was the perfect episode to bring this arc to a close. There’s Sanji comforting Carrot when she was trying to comfort him, and Pudding, who ultimately has to let go of the man who truly loved her and become alone once again with only the memories they shared. There’s also the scene where Katakuri’s younger sister tends to his wounds—the one person who always supports him, appreciates him, and accepts every side of him without prejudice, unlike everyone else. And then there’s the final parallel moment between Sanji and Zeff. I absolutely loved this episode because it contained every moment I wanted to see.

Sanji Joestar

''Gomu won't lose to Mochi'' Mochi is made by repeatedly hitting it until it takes form, but it doesn't go back to what it was. Katakuri is molded by things that hurt him and he slowly became this figure that has to put up a front for his family. Meanwhile with Rubber, No matter how hard you hit it, it'll always bounce back, taking back shape. He's so flexible he becomes almost inflexible and starts instead to shape others.

hussam abdelalim

If puddings didn't remove the memory of the kiss, do you think luffy would have left?, or maybe tried to take her with him?

charlie

The direction of recent One Piece has been incredible honestly they are doing so much to elevate the story imo

100Rainy

Brulee confirmed besto imouto! Go on take the crown from that fraud Flampe. And yeah I agree, I think it's implied Brulee stood up to those bullies to defend Katakuri when they were kids and she got cut for it

charlie

The end of this arc with Zeff and Sanji is definitely my favorite arc ending and the panel of them both there is in my top 3 panels in the whole story it really is a perfect ending imo

Zoodinger

This episode is perfect, top 5 for me. A better translation of the lyrics, including the equivalent dub lyrics, can be found here. Worth checking out: https://onepiece.fandom.com/wiki/Soul_Pocus_~Song_of_the_Queen~ Make sure the final ~ is part of the url (patreon phone app doesn't include it so if you just click it won't work) I don't speak Japanese so I don't know if it's more "accurate", but this translation makes a lot more sense Even as someone with a strong preference for the sub version, I would suggest watching this in dub too, because the better lyrics for western audiences imo make the song hit even better.

Mister Kap

Easily a top 5 episode for me, from the entire show. The music/soundtrack is unmatched. And it is without a doubt one of the best arc-ending episodes in the show. Most ending episodes in arcs (ignoring the ones that are post-arc, wider world reactions, etc) are very single-note. There is no major plot points really continuing to the very end of an arc. Typically we already beat the bad guy, probably had a celebratory feast/party, etc. It's very boiler plate. The only other analogue to this arc's ending is that of Marineford. The direction in this episode is probably among the best in the series so far. Imagine getting the conclusion of not 1, not 2, but 3 different plot threads in a single climactic episode. Pudding's tragic conclusion for her story, Katakuri/Brulee's backstory and heartwarming scene, and all over the backdrop of this epic fight between 3 great powers (the Big Mom pirates, the Sun Pirates, and Germa). The fight really just hammers down, in case you somehow missed it already, just how powerful an Emperor's of the Sea's crew really is. Even when faced with an assassination attempt from two captains of the Worst Generation, who also disabled multiple of the Big Mom pirate's strongest members, and then assaulted by an ex-warlord of the sea and his Fish-Men crew, along with an all-out war from an advanced mobile country parked right in their borders, they still hold their own. And then Big Mom appears like a force of nature, as a literal tsunami, which is no doubt intentional; yet another example of her being shown as this unstoppable titan. I know the One Piece remake probably won't get to this arc until like a decade from now, but I really am so interested in seeing this arc being re-made with updated animation and compact direction, and even a better/expanded soundtrack.

Edword

Yes as I have been saying bro the music made this arc the best for me since I also love musicals too. My top 1 arc to this day ignoring the pacing issues for some moments. Its funny in hindsight I guess thats why Brulee was also near Katakuri and Luffys fight girl loves her brother got kidnapped twice during and after the fight cuz she as she said this episode shes always watching him lol

Zoodinger

Pasting the dub lyrics from above for the lazy people: Soul Pocus, Soul Pocus Echoes of the heart as we depart It weighs heavy on our mind, the friends we left behind Let the tide take me away, as the ship so gently sways Sing a lullaby for the battle scars of yesterday (Interlude) Mama's on her way, what a day! Flower! Wearing borrowed smiles from those who traded their humanity Twisted lies like vines that wind so gently around me Songs seducing us so sweetly Soul Pocus Mama's greed set the stage for this cruel tragedy For all her family The prince from a fairytale Princess in a wedding veil A puppet show for certain Hiding tears behind the curtain Even sweet nectar that draws us with its flavor Hides a wickedness that's difficult to savor Tempting candy, laid out grandly Rots your soul like a cavity Hidden feelings locked away Can only cause dismay In someone else's play (Interlude) Bow to the candy queen Or face the guillotine There's no room here for mercy If you want to be free (Interlude) Soul Pocus Soul Pocus When selfish words can hold us You're lured by a cake slice Though it's better to think twice Soon enough you'll see how much that you must sacrifice There's no gain here, power reigns here All is ruled by fear Bring a treat here, make it sweet dear Or you'll find your end is quite near Tempting candy, laid out grandly Rots your soul like a cavity Soul Pocus Childlike to a flaw, Mama Give your lifespan and breath Or do you wish for death? Soul Pocus This is the queen's Last song

100Rainy

I'm pretty sure the favor was just a kiss and she erased it from his memory because as much as she'd like to, she knows a committed relationship with him would be doomed as long as her mother is around. Sanji also has his own adventures to continue and doesn't want to keep him from that, he would absolutely fight to bring Pudding along and she doesn't want to burden him in that way. It also shows a tremendous difference between herself and Big Mom. Unlike her controlling mother who's unwilling to let go of anyone or anything useful to her, she's willing to let go of the person most precious to her if it means they can be free and happy. Pudding was also incredibly attached to her sisters Lola and Chiffon but she learned to let them both go too for their own peace and happiness, it's a similar deal with Sanji here.

When will the podcast be?

Good directors can genuinely make or break the quality of an episode, for anything not just One Piece. A lot of the content here could've easily just fell flat and not hit the way its supposed to. I'm so glad the staff behind this ep were prepared to send this arc off with all the care and effort it deserved Whole Cake Island has it faults just like with any arc, but my god what an absolute magical experience overall. Really holds a special place in my heart, it's legit some of Oda's best work since Marineford imo

Artemis

If you loved OP up to this point, this is when the show stops being just a regular anime series for the shonen demographic and catapults into its sensational mainstream popularity. Modern seasonal anime at the time was delivering theatrical-quality animation almost every week (like My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho, or Demon Slayer), and Toei clearly realized that One Piece needed to look like a prestige show to maintain its status. Hence why select episodes in this arc (in terms of visuals, sound design, and direction) have a movie-like quality to them. So, this arc is kind of the first taste of that level-up within Toei's production team. We have been waiting for SO LONG for you to make it to this point and I can't believe you are finally here. I am super excited to witness the rest and make it all the way to the end.

Artemis

Oda loves his gag tropes, but this episode proves Brulee has a genuinely tragic, human side to her. Honestly, the Big Mom Pirates are some of the most well-realized antagonists in the series I think. They aren't just one-dimensional villains (like most supporting villains in previous arcs were) they’re a deeply dysfunctional family with genuine depth, hidden layers, and fleshed-out backstories. This won't be the last we see of them for sure.

Artemis

The conclusion of this arc proves why when oda wants to write something truly deep and compelling, he knocks it out of the park. Focusing so heavily on the shared trauma (the princess and the crown prince) aka Sanji and Pudding, and letting them find their own ways to heal, gives the story so much emotional depth imo. But the real stroke of brilliance is how it elevates the importance of cooking. Before this arc, cooking was delegated to a simple role of the ship but now oda has incorporated it into a major story arc where his skill and experiences were put to the test. Sanji making that cake highlights a beautiful, universal truth in One Piece. No matter who you are, friend or foe, everyone gets hungry and the cherry on the top. Ending this whole saga with that stunning visual parallel to Zeff completely brings Sanji’s journey full circle. It is genuinely brilliant writing. If not for the pacing issues of the anime, this arc is honestly one of my favorites in just pure execution.

eichiro "i dont write romance" Oda

FuzionNinja

idk if anyone mentioned but the reverie arc is short and has a lot of flashbacks. Itll be a pain to watch it while skipping flashbacks so i would recommend one pace just so we can get all the good parts out of reverie and move on to wano. Just my thoughts but do wtv is easier for you guys

지원

i agree

Capitano

We don't know if they were in Big Mom's territory or if Big Mom even had a territory when Katakuri was that young. Katakuri is like 48, so the flashback is set almost 40 years in the past.

charlie

wouldn't it be just as easy to skip through the flashbacks

It's a common take I see with Sanji and Pudding's arc finale that she erased the memory of the kiss/final request because she doesn't want to burden him, and that he will surely feel responsible/want to take her with him etc. But I think he will still go even with knowing about it. She did more for herself than for him. To me, Pudding took the memory because it was another selfish request from her, and that she thinks deep inside, that she doesn't deserve any of it. She felt like she just takes and takes from him, and his kindness. Up until the end she was not truthful to him, or managed to do what she wanted: to apologize about all the things she's done. For me it was more of the tragedy that even at the end of the arc, they were never in the same page. Sanji left thinking that Pudding was just tolerating him, with that interaction of him thanking her for playing the role of his fiancee. He is aware of how she acts in front of him, the love-dazed stuff, but I feel that he is rationalizing it as some form of acting, with his own internalized low self-worth. He did finally take baby steps in this arc but it was more of the platonic and familial kind of love. By the ending it felt like it was how Law viewed Corazon's love, like rationalizing it and finding reason in it. Sanji doesn't think Pudding has any reason to feel that way towards him, vs say Zeff and the Strawhats who have known him and have accepted him. It's nice to think that Pudding feels she just takes and takes, while Sanji only gives and gives. They really need to work on that since it should be both ways. TLDR Both of them have this feeling of being undeserving of love. And the arc is their first step into healing from that and self-acceptance, but romance is just not for them... yet. okay thank you for coming to my ted talk byeeee

rune

I just wanna add how fun it is to have the prince/princess and knight roles were played in this arc. I love how it switches up and how it's shared throughout WCI. At the start it was Sanji (prince) needs saving from the knight (Luffy). Then in the wedding, it was Sanji (knight) saving Pudding (princess). After the wedding, the knight role was shared between Luffy and Pudding (and by extension Sanji). Then after the Katakuri fight, it was back to Luffy (prince) being saved by Sanji (knight) at Cacao Island, a really good conclusion from how the arc started.

Porco

Most times the directing is absolutely awful but this was quite alright

Dax22

ik u said the sanji getting nosebleeds from underage women as a joke but in this case sanji is 21 and charlotte is 16 as well 😭😭😭😭😭 i just prefer to wipe it from my memory im ngl

Matthew Gilroy

Just to say, the Reverie Arc in the anime is like 80% flashbacks per episode. Most reactors watch the edited version that is just the manga adapted material. Also, that final episode is top 5 final episodes to an arc. Wish more people talked about it more. Toei cooked

SomeoneElse

Pudding is genuinely one of my favourite characters and that moment between her and Sanji is super high on my list of favourite moments in the whole series. It's so well done. With nearly 1000 episodes of character building for Sanji behind it, the whole dynamic (including the wedding and his reaction to her eye) could only have been pulled off this well because of the character that Sanji is. It's so tragic for him to forget that a woman genuinely loved him despite how little he values himself after his upbringing. LOVE IT

Oussama Essamadi

Sooo many nails were hit this episode man. And for the arc to end on the Zeff/Sanji split screen is so on point given everything that happened. The scene with Pudding ridding Sanji from the favor she asked him speaks to me on so many levels. I love the silent film direction they went with.

Oussama Essamadi

We all should lmao. Atrocities are coming our way.

Dizzt

I'M SO EXCITED FOR WHAT'S COMMING NEXT

Matess

While it has some obvious problems, Whole Cake will always be one of my favorite arcs. Concerning Reverie, you will for sure either need something like a timestamp or just straight up use One Pace, it would be for the best.

DefensiveOnion

...I had no idea and you know what, I'm gonna need the Knights Moralis to wipe my memory as well right now

Krykee

This arc in my opinion is the start of Toei actually giving One Piece its full attention. Animation picks up immensely, they get a plethora of new music that is put together very well, the character development of characters that have been with us since the beginning and the “newer” straw hats like brook. And the antagonists become so much more complex. Peak arc. Get ready for more peak

Monkey bing bong

Miyuki Sawashiro's performance as Pudding is excellent.

Veritas

They accidentally animated Brook with a tongue just for the hungry gag at the end, oh well lol

Joking on Zoro aside, in all seriousness, I simply can't comprehend how people do not view Sanji as the Vice Captain, and I'd even go as far to say the strawhat Luffy is bonded to the closest. Like seriously. Sanji has had by far the most focus out of any strawhat Post-timeskip. In 2nd place, and highly underrated, is Usopp, given his role in Dressrosa. Sanji was the lead of the Twirly Hats when the Straw Hats were split. Sanji was the one and only strawhat that got an expanded backstory. Sanji is the one who interacts with the arc's characters the most. Sanji is the one where Oda actually dabbled in romance via Pudding. The first arc focused on a Yonko has the very final last scene focus on Sanji and Zeff. I just simply can't understand how people can view Zoro like they do. Oda just places so much importance on Sanji, writing wise, focus wise, and even in strength wise he is in the Monster Trio so Zoro doesn't stand out in that department either. And guess what, Sanji even gets BETTER from here. Which is crazy given the trajectory we're going with the, uh, Kaido conflict and what "land" we're going to. *Cough* *cough*. Oh yeah, I'm going to have a LOT to say in the future regarding the Black Leg in that arc in comparison with the Green Guy's and SBS-related things *cough* *cough*. No spoilers until it's time to discuss🤫

Emm Eff

Definitely one of my favorite episodes! This arc is so great, plus the musical element chef kiss!!!

Szonin

I use this song to cry myself to sleep. Better love story than Romeo & Juliet, damn you Oda.

Shioplet

And how she’ll never forgive the Straw Hats for messing with Katakuri not because of all the “kidnapping” and “forced” labor they put her through 😭

Degenerick

“One Piece’s directing is often one of it’s biggest downfall” oh boy wait til wano and after 🍿☕️

JoyBoy

Gosh I loved soul pocus what an ending

Combatnoodlez

my food got cold because i couldn't eat while crying so much 😭😭😭😂

Daniel Assis

Man, this has got to be one of the best episodes of the series so far. I swear, the soundtrack is phenomenal, and the ending of this arc is so unique. It was already amazing, but then we get Pudding's flashback and the Brûlée and Katakuri scene, just the cherry on top we didn't know we needed. It's episodes like this that remind us why we love One Piece so much. This arc is criminally underrated!!!!!!!!

Daniel Assis

Wow, never thought about that, but it makes sense, it jusr makes me love Brulee even more!!! She is amazing!!!

beannie

i sob like a mf with soul pocus, this is probably in my top 3 endings to an arc, so beautifully orchestrated

Sammy

This episode adapts Chapter 902 in its entirety. it's a top ten chapter of the whole series for me and the anime does not disappoint. Whole Cake is an arc that has its highs and lows (especially in the anime with the extra padding to the already rough parts of the manga), but the highs are so incredible. One of the things Oda is kind of infamous for is his family annihilation tendencies. Lots of dead parents. So we finally get an arc revolving entirely around the impact parents have on their children, both good and bad, and I think it's just so emotionally incredible. Especially the closing shot. Ending it on Sanji and Zeff is just so perfect. Zeff was not a perfect dad. Way to reliant on physical punishment and he taught Sanji a troubled view of women, but it's real and good, and it is so important to who Sanji is today. I tend to rate Sanji as my least favorite Straw Hat because his troublesome aspects are really hard to overlook, but I still love him so much. He's a good chef and a good person, and this arc did him so much Justice. Him and Pudding are OTP btw.
