I like how the anime (and, from what I can tell, the manga too, though I haven't read it) consistently avoids showing Genghis Khan's face. From a narrative perspective, it makes him feel less like a person and more like a force of nature , casting a shadow over everyone we meet and everything that happens throughout the story Also, if I remember correctly, the Merkits (tribe in which Toregene married) kidnapped Genghis Khan's first wife, Borte, before Toregene's flashback. That event became one of the major catalysts for Genghis Khan's campaign against the Merkits, the conclusion of which I assume we saw in the flashback, though I may be mistaken

Correct, It is also more likely than not that Jochi, Genghis's first son and first prince Jochi (who you saw in episode 2) was born from the rape of his wife under captivity by the Merkits. iirc Genghis still basically treated him as if he was his trueborn.

it should also be noted however, that prior to all of this, Genghis's mother was originally wedded to a Merkit until she was abducted by Genghis's father who then had Genghis. So it's a real long blood feud

God watching this show makes me wish you two watched Gankutsuouo: The Count of Monte Cristo too 😭 it would fit right in with the drama of this show (also it’s beautifully animated, directed, and composed)
