Mr Dude

Thank you!

Luffy got his Plus Ultra Moment! Tsugi wa...kimi da. Luffy in Udon is one of my all time favorite portrayals of his character.

Matthew Gilroy

Oda was in risky water with the ending of this. Luffy got humiliated by a top tier, and the same top tier got knocked out by Kaido's subordinate. Only fodders remained, so how would Oda give us something for Luffy? Well, it was a writing moment, not a powerscaling one. The mistakes of Whole Cake were not repeated. It was not Luffy fighting and struggling with Queen for 15 episodes and then Luffy somehow magically gets stronger and wins. Instead, Oda just got the powerful figures the fuck out of there and gave us a character writing moment instead. Messy, but it could have been so much worse

Ty

Luffy vs katakuri is one of the best written fights in one piece. Just because it was drawn out does not make the writing on it bad. Saying Luffy magically gets stronger completely ignores the whole point of the fight.

Matthew Gilroy

It can't be one of the best written fights when the intention of the fight changes halfway through. Regardless, this speech here is much better, and makes me think and reflect more than fucking snakeman. It makes me reflect on Luffy's childhood, his momemts in Sabaody, and his fight with Doflamingo, to name a few

Matthew Gilroy

This entire Udon prison training with Ryou really shows Luffy vs Katakuri's weakness. The whole of Wano actually. It feels fucking real. Unlike the 2nd half of Whole Cake which was a manufactured narrative where Oda played it safe as hell (minus the final episode which is amazing)

Something to remember is these plague rounds are infecting people with a disease, not poison. While the mechanics of it don't seem to differ much from how Magellan's poison/venom worked, I don't think Luffy's considerable poison resistance is really a factor here. It's more just his general resilience.

Bro Carson was killing me this episode LMAO

Episodes like this remind me why Luffy is the eternal GOAT, not that I needed reminding but just tanking the plague to stop the prisoners and pulling out this speech to inspire them. Man.

Sander D.Castle

Lol "Luffy just gets stronger and wins" *shows a 20 episode fight that's all him learning his opponents technique through trial and error*

Sanji Joestar

'' magically gets stronger '' You can't make an analysis of this scene if your basis for comparison is completely wrong to begin with. Luffy taking over Udon is also not a comparable victory to him taking down Katakuri. It's simply just a different resolution because he's not here to take down these guys but rile them up. This is trying too much to make writing connections that don't exist to justify a criticism about Whole Cake that still doesn't make sense to this day.

These episodes aired during October 2020 and the manga chapters were published about 5-6 months earlier during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. It really hit different during those times.

SomeoneElse

The prison segment is the worst pacing-wise and then another portion quite a bit later but again I think you'll find there's so much good stuff happening that you're excited about that even during those moments you won't be bothered

Artemis

The ending of the Udon arc stands out as a masterpiece of Luffy's characterization here. What makes it one of my favorite moments is how Luffy shatters the prisoners learned helplessness. Instead of just fighting their oppressors, he takes on the deadly Mummy virus himself to show them his resolve. Speaking directly to the broken samurais and the present Red Scabbards, he delivers this incredible speech about what freedom actually means to a country like wano who its lowly citizens and slaves have never felt before. Wano is filled with subtle narrative threads that demand close attention, but the climax of Udon Prison is where the core thesis of the entire story lays itself bare. It perfectly distills the grand theme of One Piece which is luffy refuses to be a traditional savior like other protagonists who just fights their battles; instead, he forces the oppressed to reclaim their own agency and i love that about it. Its highlighted strongly here. As always great writing by oda!

Mister Kap

As I recall from looking up the chapters per episode in each act, it showed an improvement each subsequent act of wano, so it should only improve from here.

Matthew Gilroy

Rewatch the fight. It seems everyone that agrees with you has forgotten, and that's fair. He gets demolished for 15 episodes, and then there is an abrupt moment where Katakuri says (paraphrasing) that he doesn't consider Luffy to be weaker than him. It makes no sense given the past 15 episodes, and then the remaining fight Luffy is suddenly competing to an absurdly higher degree. It is jarring

Matthew Gilroy

But there's no need to taint Wano discussion with the 2nd half of Whole Cake. Let's just enjoy Wano for now. I should never have brought it up in my original comment that was essentially praising Wano

Daniel Assis

Well for me there was no mistake in Whole Cake, but your comment is not gonna age very well by the end of Wano anyway so... whatever haha. (Not to mention Big Mom conveniently losing her memory and Queen being able to take her down)

Matthew Gilroy

Daniel you sound incredibly salty, and you're spoiling by setting expectations. All for what? Because you couldn't handle a minor critique in a comment that had an overall tone of praise?.. This is the 1st comment I've seen from you, and you should be embarassed. Delete your comment.
