Got me at work crying since you dropped this early lol Glad you picked up on the Zoro relationship. That is a healthy brotherly relationship he has with him. To add on top of that they tag teamed in Davy Back challenge together. Sanji stepped in front to sacrifice himself instead to Kuma to protect Zoro. He was even worried for him after the Nothing Happened situation and also if you remember he was worried about Zoro on Sabaody since he knew he was still hurt because of Kuma when they were running away.

I don't think the rat was anything important, its in the manga too but its probably an Easter egg or some small mink walking behind Sanji

I love how this backstory recontextualizes so much of Sanji's character, which up until this point was just a gag – and tbf, one that over time almost became unbearable with how much the anime unfortunately overdid it sometimes – but it hits so different with the context that all that simping, and putting women on an over-the-top pedestal, all trace back to the fact that the only kindness, he ever received as a kid, only came from the women in his family. There are so many moments in the series where his trauma quietly shines through, especially on re-read/re-watch, but just to name a few: - Like how in Water 7 he got so defensive over Usopp, because Sanji could see himself in Usopp's low self-esteem, since he'd exactly been there before, and was the only one to check up on Usopp after the big fallout. - Or in Thriller Bark, where he framed his ‘childhood dream’ of the Clear-Clear Fruit as a peeping gag, when in reality it was just a boy who once desperately wanted to disappear. - Or even in Punk Hazard, when he suddenly changed his mind about helping out Kin’emon (& took responsibility over him for the rest of the arc) the moment he had heard him earnestly plead that he just wanted to rescue his son. You cannot convince me – that at least at this point in the story – that Sanji isn't Oda's favorite Strawhat besides Luffy, with how much subtle nuance he has woven into his character across hundreds of chapters, all building towards this moment... I stg we'd all have such a different conversation about this gem of a char, if it wasn't for the highkey obnoxious gag :( #sorryfortheyap

I might be reaching but I guess this also explains why no matter how bad women beat or treat him, he can’t hurt them cause he believes they are good deep down inside (which is not always the case). Just like how Reiju would go along with the bullying but help him behind the scenes.
