LAUGH TALE!

In order to say "Laugh Tale" in japanese you'd have to say RAFUTERU, which is exactly the island's name but on its own it doesn't mean anything in japanese, so the new translation (instead of "Raftel") is an actual reveal and done on purpose by Oda as far as i know. Kinda hard to explain, hope it makes sense. (side note: a proper translation for "laugh tale" into japanese would be "waraibanashi", which is used in Bink's Sake ...)

The difference between where you guys are currently at and what's happening now is like night and day. Don't ever feel like you are at the end because it's crazy how the story keeps getting better. Even now we are still getting reveals of stuff that happened hundreds of episodes ago. Lol it's crazy.

Japanese has three writing systems, Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Katakana is used when talking about foreign words in Japanese. Throughout the manga the last island name was always written in Katakana. Since Japanese does not have the letter L or GH, it ends up written as Rafuteru. If you don't know the context, it is almost impossible to know what foreign word it is referring to. Heck, it might just literally be "Raftel". However this was a play on words by Oda, and he reveals what it actually is in this episode.

Genghis Baan is legendary... I don't think I've registered that as a one piece name until now lol

Others already explained it. But Raftel is what people in the world have been calling it. We never knew how it was spelled. Think of the Roger Pirates telling someone about Laugh Tale. Then that person tells someone at a bar orally about Laughtell (that's what he thought it was called), then the 10th person goes around talking about Raftel. It's a game of telephone, information only in oral communication. Laugh Tale is a weird name for an island to begin with. Oda took advantage of a quirk of the Japanese language. Rafuteru is just sounds forming a made up name, it doesn't have any meaning, unless one knows the English word it's trying to imitate.

Bro you should have seen the theater reaction when LaughTale spelling was revealed in the movie. It’s not confusing if you know how Japanese works. A lot of gets missed and unfortunately gets mistranslated and not as deep for the western or non Japanese speaking fans. Oda loves his word play that gets hints and hidden stuff that is not able to be translated for the non JP speaking fans
