The Making of The Goop Room

So Duffer 1 & 2 didn't think their lame little finale was enough, did they? They just HAD to drop a whole documentary about the making of Stranger Things season 5 that made them look like fools! From THREE YEARS not being a sufficient amount of time to write a script about a bunch of kids fighting a monster, to their inability to procure high enough quality goop, these guys probably shoulda kept this one in the Upside Down.

That said, it is a very cool peek behind-the-scenes of such a massive production and it actually provides more satisfying closure than the finale itself. They even let Schnapp make an appearance or two!

I grew up watching live tv episodes but also able to watch the “on demand” catch up for some shows. I loved when Netflix streaming started because it made it easy and fun to watch seasons I hadn’t seen or rewatch the whole series. Binge culture definitely ruined series. I think Covid had an impact too since that’s when most people consumed tons of media bc they’re stuck at home. People wanted more since they could dissect everything IMO

This is my Conformity Gate episode. Thank you Eric and Miles.

Macauly Leiher

I would love season 1-3 tracks you guys are right it really does suck that there aren’t any tracks for those seasons and it would be fun to have the knowledge of the end and the duffer jokes of it all

sus

PLEASE go back and do season 1-3 with miles 🙏 especially since the tracks are going crazy on TikTok rn

Sam Russell

I felt like a proud mama at how much goop content you guys got! And I’ve always said that.

Queen Hudson

100% agree with Eric. Even The Pitt (hbo) released last year and started airing the new season this month. However they are filming (or recently finish) the finale. Still, years in between is insane

salemisjuucy

had absolutely zero desire to watch this beyond the clips i'd seen on social media but now I must sit my ass down and LISTEN

Matty1003

Your point about shows taking way too long in between seasons is one of the biggest reasons why I love the Pitt. It feels like old school tv, there was only a 9 month wait in between seasons and there’s 15 episodes a season, season 2 started airing as they’re still filming the last few episodes, and it’s incredible

Gillian

I’ve been waiting for YEARS for y’all to watch the Netflix movie with Noah Schnapp being a creepy kid that gets tutored so now y’all are just teasing me 😅

Josh

i think the duffer going through the divorce is gonna get with his secretary linda and he becomes christian slater and stars in dirty john betty the betty boderick story

Macauly Leiher

The entire arrowverse came and went in the span of this show. Cisco makes a joke about stranger things in season 2 of the flash.

cass

The fact so many people thought there just HAD to be another episode, that netflix crashed when it was "rumoured to be released" is insanely embarrassing for the duffs.

Josh

also missed opportunity for a "i like standing next you duffer, you make me look so tough" when you asked if lucas ever hit one of the duffers LOL

Gillian

Plot twist: Micah has been the third unmentioned Duffer brother all along. The Frankie Jonas if you will.

Tarell

I hope they were offended when ppl asked about the "secret" episode.

BewareTheGrayGhost

Holy shit, my kingdom for tracks of Seasons 1-3 of Stranger Things. This was such a delightful watch (particularly whenever yall would get on the edge of your seats for #GoopWatch2026), and I'm only partly embarrassed to admit I teared up watching this documentary just as I teared up watching the finale. Like you mentioned, I'm about the same age as the kids (slightly older), and this was me saying goodbye to nearly ten years of this show, an entire chapter of my life. I probably would have cried even if it WAS the worst finale of all time, haha. Manifesting Stranger Things 5 at HHN this year!!

INSANE goop reveal

Dippity_Dip

Idk about actual demogorgan porn but there’s a popular steddie AU where Steve is part demo and Eddie is a vampire upsidedown bat creature, and I’ve seen demogorgan Steve in some.. positions. Twitter is a scary place guys

Also, if you're interested in full table reads, I believe there's one or two on the netflix tudum website

Another potential reason for shows taking too long: when there is no longer a distinction between a TV actor and a movie actor, suddenly production is being pushed back by Millie Bobby Brown needing to film Enola Holmes 3, Finn Wolfhard directing a movie, Maya Hawke doing voice work for Inside Out 2…actors aren’t really “picking a lane” to stay in anymore. Which is somewhat the fault of the production too…if you don’t give your actors a clear start date, of course they’re going to sign on to other projects if there’s no start in sight. Matthew Fox knew his ass needed to be in Hawaii by April every year to film Lost, so he wasn’t signing on to do a bunch of other stuff in between. (This is also coming from someone who was born a week after Lost premiered, so I might be totally wrong lol)

aliselv

it's absolute cinema that every time any of the cast or production staff ask one of the duffs a question, they leave more confused than when they didn't have any context at all

Alesha Kenaley

my headcanon is that noah spent hours doing a talking head about the coming out scene and then eagerly watched the doc and slowly realized they didn’t use any of it

moose tracks

The purple-haired girl who said "demo fatigure" is kate trefry who also terribly wrote the terrible play The First Shadow lol like I cannot believe they showed her saying that its so yikes lol

its truly wild they wrote a like, 45 minute epilogue and yet left SO much unfinished

A huge reason streaming tv takes so long that you didn't mention: The way contracts/renewals are negotiated. Back when TV was more frequent, the creatives would know before the end of the season if their show was likely getting renewed. Usually, networks would order multiple seasons at a time if the show is a hit, and actors would have multi-year contracts. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which came out right at peak trek popularity, was green lit for 6 seasons before a single episode aired. Every lead actor signed a 6-season contract. With streaming TV, every season is a new contract, and usually it gets announced a few months after the last episode airs. Think about how long it took for Doctor Odyssey to be "officially cancelled." They used to have, at most, a few weeks after the last episode before that show would come back in the fall. Stranger Things 5 got renewed earlier, but it was still after the last episode of 4 wrapped, and they had to renegotiate every lead's contract and such. I wrote this whole thing out and went to go check when Pluribus got renewed, and it turns out it was greenlit for 2 seasons when it was announced... so why is it taking so long?? I think they are theorizing late 2027!!!

Jada Merritt

I'd attribute the industry labor disputes for maybe... MAYBE... a year's worth of delays? Anything more than that is purely the Duffers not getting a move on + scheduling problems w/ their series regulars.

BewareTheGrayGhost

I need some film student to go full ROOM 237 by making a documentary about the most insane #conformitygate conspiracy theorists. Pluck five of them and just do ROOM 237 but for the Stranger Things fandom.

Krista

Please do seasons 1-3 again revisiting Billy would be so thrilling

Kyle Tenneson

Miles the type of guy to take his shoes off mid conversation.

Remy Theobald

the actress who plays holly did such a good job but the amount of screentime holly had compared to the og cast is insane. Honestly i feel like instead of taking holly (and the kids), vecna should have just taken mike, that way literally every main character would have been impacted and instead of trapping him in a dreamworld it could have been a really cool neverending nightmare and really kept the s4 horror elements. and it would have really impacted Eleven and Will, god such wasted potential. there are some bits of s5 i like but man the fan theories were so much better, and im not even talking about the conformity gate ones

Remy Theobald

The fact that they started shooting not just the season, but the finale as well without finishing the script is insane

Remy Theobald

i watched this documentary a few weeks ago and i was so excited to see your reactions to all the goop scenes

Vanessa

The reason why it took extra time is because there was a writers strike, then an actors strike which took almost a year all together

lexi

i have a #theory that the main reason they broke up jonathan and nancy is because the actors are dating in real life so the divorced duffer was jealous and bitter af watching them be in a long term happy relationship LOL especially because they met on the show and get to work on it together as a happy couple

Dane Yurchak

Streaming really changed TV, but tv shows used to just have good tv actors who were locked into multi season contracts with a strict schedules from the studio. Now we have big time Hollywood actors that the shows/studio have to work around them rather than the other way around.

Macauly Leiher

Eric I thought you were crazy about your Get the town to fight the baddie idea. But I just watched the gravity falls finale (the better stranger things) and it has exactly that all these characters you have grown to see and love over the years banding together to fight monsters in an awesome way. That would have been AWESOME. you could have had like Joyce’s boss from the convenience store decking a demo, that girl eleven Brained with the skate wrecking shit in that el Camino void. She is there because argyle showed up with some weed and gets a vecna stoned so that Mr. Clark can teach him about worm holes and with the power of Susie and Dustin singing the Flash Gordon Theme song He turns heal and sacrifices him self to save his little sister 11 from the big ol spider that is the mind flayer and then Joyce can be “hey kid, I know we picked on you in high school.” And then hopper finishes with Steve’s dad who yes is Also there speaking simultaneously “you did good kid” and then vecna dies in Millie’s arms as they descend from the upside down listening to Raspberry Beret.

Calum Bradley

the actress for robins girlfriend is IRISH, not British (as am I). touchy subject lol :)

Arthur Edington

I would say one reason TV shows take so long nowadays is that the bar today is different from the bar in the past. In the past, you could have cheap-looking sets and effects because the standards weren't as high as today's are. Now, because of the advancements in technology, people's standards have changed. They're no longer content with cheap sets and cheap effects; they want to be immersed in the show. So do the people who are making the shows now; they have more tools at their disposal to go bigger than they could back then. But also the landscape of tv is so different now than it used to be.

1:49:25 Miles said it really well here I think a large part of what "happened" to TV as Eric put it is simply a separation of the industry between two different kinds of mediums pulling further apart in the time of the internet, and the age of streaming/streaming services

Tyler Tennis

Honestly one of the most wholesome tracks ever

So they did make one season really fast and that was Season 2 which is considered the worst season. The actors get a lot of leeway without guaranteed renewals and the idea of showing the whole season does slow things down since you have to wait until the show is done. I agree that the writing should have been done and I'm guessing the second half was a letdown given how long the first half shot to film that they lost time and money. I would love for us to not hold these show to film standards as some bad TV effects are priceless.
