I frequently get requests from people asking what I do in regard to model releases.
It's easy: I make sure I have all the rights I need to be able to publish images in whatever way I think I might need.
On various forums people object about this as TFP is a no money between people and if I use images commercially blah blah.
My perspective is this:
If I don't have the rights to the images I shoot, I would never be able to publish the images in a book. or Patreon, exhibitions could be problematic, I couldn't send an image to a competition (as they require you sign over some rights to them) and even if I make a group image with two models I need rights to relicense the images as If I didn't have the rights the models would not be able to publish the images, without obtaining rights from the other model. Now extrapolate this to a larger group shot and you will see the point.
The real clincher though is this: I I do not have permission to relicense images I could not post an image on any social media as you effectively sign over some rights to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter once you do. And if you don't have the rights to do this you have a serious potential legal problem.
On the flip side it is really illegal for models to post anything on social media unless they have been granted rights to do so by the photographer (good luck in enforcing this though).
Now about fairness:
I could not make the images I do without having access to great models. It would be images of empty landscapes, or white walls The models are an important component of what I do and I want to honor their work.
I have the potential to make money on the work we do together, but so do they. In some ways it's slightly more limited as they are not able to relicense to make prints as otherwise it would undermine things like print sales and especially so for limited edition prints.
First of all I'm good at what I do and I guarantee that models will receive a minimum of 3 super good images. and I alway over deliver (I have had a couple of catastrophic shoots where I only delivered 3 shots but only twice).
There is also a timeline, a date by which I guarantee the model will receive the 3 images, there is no date on the rest.
In addition I give the model an option to get some prints of the work we have done together, something which actually may have a monetary value for them (once I'm dead and famous 😎).
And they can use the images for Onlyfans, Patreon and so on.
I use an app called EasyRelease (available on both Google and iTunes Store) and it works for me. You can easily create your own templates, and should you choose to go that way, here is a copy of one of my TF model releases.
Hope this is useful.
