In my ArtNude lighting guide, I'm showing one example of diffusing a direct light. At the end of the tutorial, you see a short snippet of this video explaining what it does.

I've attached one of the resulting images in this post so you can see the real effect of what this light setup does:

It's a 2x2m /6x6ft diffuser panel (you can make your own in wood and put diffusion filters on), but a commercial one like the Manfrotto model I use is easier as you can better tilt it and bring it on location. You don't need wheeled stands, but using at least one certainly makes using it more manageable.

As you can see in the video, I'm using a deep reflector here, and I'm shooting it at the diffusion panel from the back, so there is no or minimal direct transmission through the diffusion panel. Using a deep reflector, I can better control the light, so it only hits the diffuser and doesn't spill all over the studio.

Using a diffusion panel like this creates a soft but still distinct light source that accentuated differences in shape.

Also, I have a couple of Black Foamcore boards to restrict light spill on the background and model to create clean shadows.

And I use a gridded lamp like a beauty dish to illuminate the background, again without having too much light spill.
