When I travel, I always allow for contingencies for shooting.

I've learned that shit happens.

You can plan all you want, but on occasion, things does not work out as planned:

  • Someone is having a picnic at your planned location,
  • The weather does not play along,
  • You encounter 100+ police officers out on a drill training their dogs (yeah, I've encountered that once on a shoot).

In any event, I prefer having a plan B (and a plan C and D is never a bad idea either).

So one of the things I do when I travel is trying very hard to find photographable housing. It means the accommodation is frequently more expensive, and I spend a bit more time researching, but I prefer that over losing a shoot day.

In this case, Elena Cojoianu and I were driving from the Lake District to the Peak District. I had three locations plotted in on my GPS, and all of them were teeming with people as we arrived late afternoon.

So we drove back to the accommodation as I had booked a room with a massive bed, a good window, and a nice bathroom and shot there.

Lighting is natural light only, so this is as easy as it can be.

And it is of course not the same as shooting in nature, but it's not that bad either.

The next day at dawn, we managed an outdoor shoot for about an hour before it started pelleting down.
