I spent my first day around Lake Como going to Italy, finding some location to shoot on. I generally go for light and scenery and somewhere secluded. Sometimes I have to settle for 2 out of three, though.
I had one day of shooting Aria Rainbow and Carillon Doll, so I made a tight-packed plan including a bit of nature, some industrial location, and a bit of urbex. Yeah, it was a long day.
We arrived at this site a couple of hours later than I had planned. The sun had just passed over the mountain above us by then, leaving the light from above and one side.
Underneath the models and myself was a sheer drop of maybe 20m to the water, so moving further out, which would have given amazing light, was not an option. I could hardly move around at all.
So I was facing a dilemma:
How much over-exposure can my camera handle? Because the only possibility of shooting here was to use what was there and increase the exposure overexposing 3-5 ƒ stops.
Add to that this this was the first shot of the day with a model I had never worked with before, so there is always some pressure to make some good images from the first set.
Given a choice between photographing or not photographing, I will generally take the first, and I did here too. Better try and fail than not try at all. And it turned out that the camera (and lenses) could take a lot more overexposure than I thought was possible without unfortunate side effects.
So this started as a loose-loose situation, but I ended up with some pictures, and I learned something new about the capabilities of my equipment.
