How do skilled manipulators get their way?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are delving into the dark side with Emperor Palpatine. They discuss his master plan and how he uses others to seize power and get his way. Jonathan explains the many techniques that Palpatine uses, like gaslighting, grooming, and manipulating. Oh my! You may be surprised when Jonathan proposes to step in with therapy. Though Alan struggles with the prequels (don’t forget, the prequels hurt Alan), he talks about why he likes the Palpatine story line. How many prequel memes did you spot?

So excited for this! Hoping to see Jono geek out!!

EmsieHammer

I love May. So much Star Wars. It’s the best.

Holly✌️

I received the notification on time!

IndyDrawsArt

So how DOES one tell Patreon more than 2 minutes before a drop would be, uh… better? Lol

IndyDrawsArt

Anywho! Looking forward to this unexpected thingie. Technical term. :)

Quoofle

Oooo another drop!

Emily Gravity

So many drops today! I’m happy about it

Seldanz_

What is going on? Why does it feel like this should not have dropped?

bryt.knee

Wait. ANOTHER ONE?!

bryt.knee

Lol exactly what I was thinking

Wendy Darling

Palps had such Mr Bean vibes here.

bryt.knee

Are we not supposed to see this?! 😫

Amelia from the BitchenBoutique

100%! I’m one of the weirdos who was super into the political machinations in the prequels, and how a trade disagreement was used to launch the feckin EMPIRE. Well, helped by a moody teen whose girlfriend didn’t say “I love you too” quick enough so he became an incel who blows up planets.

Holly✌️

There are no adults here (Jono or Alan)

Emily Gravity

Corrine confirmed today’s double feature is intentional on the discord!!!

Holly✌️

Was this supposed to be dropped on May the 4th?

Smidge

Padme's clothiers went way harder on this film than they had any right to.

Terpsichore

Omg this is insane. I love it.

Smidge

"EDWARD know what you want."

bryt.knee

I'm so glad I have today off to catch this CT double feature. Heck yeah 😎

Austin Bell

Christopher Lee was a Tucci. I miss him.

IndyDrawsArt

“Dew it.” xD Use this meme all the time with friends.

IndyDrawsArt

“Polish the turd and make it shine.” Lol Speaks to their skills as actors. Impressive.

Smidge

MEESA THELIOMA

IndyDrawsArt

So basically Alan is saying Star Wars universe = excellent playground lol

Wendy Darling

Alan's OTHER superpower - SW fanfic 😅

Elizabeth McDowell

Every time I see this part I laugh thinking about the Studio C sketches with Palpatine. So fun

Jameson Childress

“Playing into his hand,” I see what you did there!

Terpsichore

Car dealership late life career change. Priceless.

Kendra Jucksch

My husband said we should just clone Ian mcdiarmid…and then the infinite Star Wars trilogy sequels will be complete

Smidge

It's okay, Jono. It can happen to a guy in his 40's

Terpsichore

Fantastic. Thank you boys!

Hannah Petersen

I like the breakdown, but anyone notice the weird edit at 12 minutes with the intro again?

Anders

Star Wars at the Cantina, but it's just a bar? We got that in the Holiday Special. It was the *only* watchable part of that monstrosity. And it was only watchable because of Bea Arthur.

Anders

So here's a subtlety. Jono talks about how a manipulator is going to say "what you believe doesn't serve you." when you're at your lowest. And then he does *exactly* the same thing to Palpatine when he's at his weakest, when he's hit rock bottom. Therapists are Sith Lords.

Meg W.

“BECAUSE THEY ACCUSED AHSOKA OF MURDER!” Hahaha. Yes. Yes good Jono. Very good.

Sterling Rose Ray

Awesome job! Thanks guys. This made my day. May the 4th be with you!

There is actually episode of clone wars when senate is taken hostage. Anakin is there trapped without lightsaber (and he has to hide because he was there for padme) and he is basically John maclaening it against cad bane and his crew :D I have some issues with prequels especially with anakin in revenge of the sith, but palpatine is perfect and he is never as great after his disfiguration, because the manipulation becomes a bit too cheesy and villainess becomes a bit too moustache twirling (except short hologram moment in rebels when he is masked as old kind grandpa palpatine from prequels). I wouldn't say jedi don't trust anakin they just give him advice he doesn't want to hear so he seeks out palpatine who tells him everything he wants to hear. I mean windu is special case but in attack of the clones and clone wars windu trusts anakin, in aotc even more than obi-wan, jedi feel like anakin is ready for his own mission while obi-wan knows he's too reckless and arrogant. Windu only stopped trusting him at the end of clone wars most likely because anakin was too close to palpatine and became way too ruthless during end of war. Briliance of palpatine's plan is that he manipulated jedi into situation where they had only one path left and it was still shitty one. They had to join war even though jedi shouldn't be generals and windu's only way was to kill palpatine even though it was very dark path for a jedi. Palpatine claims jedi seek power but they only became generals in war because this was only way to save republic and he manipulated them into it. Jedi really avoided taking power because they saw the danger in it, but also didn't give them other way to defeat him, because they couldn't be part of politics and defeat him democraticaly. I'd disagree with attachments here because there is more of a mystical element of that in star wars. Even with healthy attachment you fear of loosing someone and if you're force sensitive, dark side tempts you and offers you power to save them and if you take that power it will corrupt you (quite like one ring) and twist you into something else. Luke nearly falls to dark side because vader threatens his sister. It's not about jedi not having emotion and not loving people, their power is fueled by love and care. But jedi still have too keep attachement from being source of fear. Obi-wan is great at that, he loves satine but even when maul kills her he doesn't fall to dark side, doesn't let his anger consume him he still is able to think and to do his job. Jedi mission is incredibly hard and it's based on self sacrifice but that's how it has to be for jedi to remain in light. It based a lot on eastern philosophy imho. Rejecting possesivness, accepting loss without being consumed by fear and anger.

BWAAHAAHAA! Loved the light saber bit at the end! Best Star Wars baby ... ? My vote is for ANDOR. I think the argument can be made it's the most human, most relatable, most emotional, most realistic, and most dangerous Star Wars world ever. LOVE IT!

Hunter Tober-McGivern

Love the episode. HOWEVER, if I ever have the opportunity to try and convince Alan and/or Jono on the Darth Jar Jar theory, I will be taking it!

Lisa C

Was there ever a director’s cut of Villain Therapy for Anakin, or of Therapist Reacts to Kylo Ren? And the shorter Therapy Techniques in Star Wars. Missing those earlier episodes, not sure if wnever got uploaded here on Patreon because there was never a director’s cut version for them.

Kambria

The fact that "dew it" was in the first like second of this video makes me so happy. Anytime I want to say "do it" I say it in his voice 😂

SaucyJTB

Okay, I wanted to come in here and apologize. I was extremely upset when grooming wasn't covered in the now infamous Labyrinth episode. While this was not the exact grooming that I experienced (mine went more... personal), I am really happy to hear it be covered here. I apologize, Jono, for calling you out so harshly. Thank you for addressing it in something that you actually enjoy ❤️.

Reuben McKay

Excellent episode. Would love to see a similar villain (anti-hero) therapy session for Light Yagami from "Death Note". (The 37 episode anime, please. Not the live action abomination.) He's a fascinating character study on good intentions and what power can do to a person.

CC

Have you guys thought about doing any Clone Wars themed episodes? I know it's a series, but you've made exceptions before! Also, Bad Batch is only 3 seasons 😉 Thanks for all that you do for us!!!

TheRentFan

I had just finished telling my husband how much I hated the Anakin/Palpatine do-si-do circlular blocking when Alan said how great it was. It is my second least favorite blocking, just a smidge behind having one actor turn away from their scene partner to deliver emotional lines. Neither blocking tropes have anything to do with reality and instantly take me out of my suspension of disbelief.

Kate Ackerley

I've been a member ever since you guys launched membership site and I've seen episodes that have changed my life (like a breakthrough in therapy)... but this episode changed my life forever. I will never ever be able to get the idea of a Die Hard Coruscant style movie out of my head ever!! I had never laughed harder watching CT content (and I have laughed a lot) than how I laughed with this. I love you guys! Keep up the good work and do reach out to Kathleen Kennedy... they are missing out! Yippee ki-yay midichlorians!!!

RenegadeForLife

At the 6:48 mark, our two hosts suggest a Star Wars Die Hard on Coruscant. Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 1 Episode 22, Hostage Crisis, is Die Hard-esque episode.

An ordinary Jedi - how he took something spectacular and make it mundane. Jedi aren’t ordinary and the way Palpetine flips that! Wow

Artanis

Two years late but I quite disagree with your take on attachments, or rather I think it needs to be made clear what the definition of attachment IS. No Jedi has ever said that close and loving relationships are bad. It's when they become possessive, unhealthy and damaging that they're obviously no bueno (Hi Anakin) and that is, I believe, what an attachment is supposed to represent, as George Lucas said as much quite clearly in more than one interview. Also, I think manipulating Anakin was quite easy because there is an absolute all-you-can-eat buffet of personal hubris that can be taken advantage of when it comes to him. Anakin had the training and surroundings to make better decisions, but he DIDN'T because Anakin LIKED what Palpatine was telling him 100%. He also had 23 years after his Fall to make better decisions, but he DIDN'T. Sheev Palpatine is an absolutely brilliant genius manipulator, but Anakin had agency that he gave away TO Palpy far too willingly. Other than me jumping to the Jedi's defense: This was an amazing take on an even more amazing character and THANK YOU for pointing out his evil brilliance!
