Hell yeah, I've been waiting for this one!

bryt.knee

"directed by no one competent. Produced by who even knows" THE EDITING IN THIS IS AMAZING and I'm 7 minutes into it. Thank 👏🏽 you 👏🏽 Emily 👏🏽

Aeras

Oh goody. I needed this as literally minutes ago I'm having a disagreement with my mom who often responds in a volatile manner. :/

Evan Linden

I’ve never been a massive Star Wars fan one way or another, but using this as an example of modeling disagreement is super smart. I’m part of the Dropout fandom, and there’s recently been some discussion of toxicity in the group (fans, not performers). Might take this back to that group

Anna Murray

Disagree Agreeably! Love it! This is a huge green flag with my Gentleman that we can achieve this!

SaucyJTB

THIS is why I say I'm not conflict avoidant. I'm not. I just know when to walk away when I know the conversation isn't going anywhere (with a few exceptions). This, though? This is the kind of conflict that I actually genuinely enjoy. Sure, it can get heated, but if we can come back to this then bring it on. Also, for anyone who hasn't watched the Deep Dives here, this is basically what they are. This was fantastic. Emily... I love you for these edits. Standing ovation for that Afroman edit 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏.

I enjoy this episode, but I feel like I gotta share my biggest beef with the sequel trilogy. They walked right up to legitimately finally balancing the force within Rey. They have all those light side Jedi are talking to her and saying they'll be with her at the end and the emperor with his army of dark side souls are literally right there, and she's connected to them and he says he's all the sith and she says she's all the jedi, but they never have the dark side souls join the light side souls, which would actually finally balance the force within Rey as she would have all the light side and all the dark side together, but no! They just didn't do that at all. Walked right up to it and then turned around like peace, I'm out and left. 🤦

Sean Sussex

The thing with the sequels is that they didn't seem to have a plan. They had three directors write three different movies and then make them. Realised after the second that plan was horrible and overcorrection producing the worst of all 9 movies.

bryt.knee

I'm glad that Jono brought up body language because it is an important factor in communication. It's feedback I've given to coworkers when we're in disagreement and they start to close up (or intimidate?) mid conversation by crossing their arms

Anna Murray

On Leia comforting Luke..... they just blew up her PLANET! She was a prominent leader of the culture and had just been devastated in ways I cannot imagine.... Luke lost an uncle he'd only even met this month....lol there's sooooo much wrong with that scene

Kimberly H

Hmm this kinda makes me want to watch Obi-Wan. I was expecting to hate it and be very disappointed, but I feel like now I can enjoy the Ewan McGregor bits and let the rest go

Emily Little

Completely off topic - Alan, your facial hair looks like Mufasa.

I will die on this hill. THE STAR WARS SERIES ARE WAY BETTER THAN THE MOVIES.

I want to touch on the issue of "staying curious" in a lot of today's disagreements. The online space makes it nearly impossible to be curious about those who disagree with you because there is a nearly endless amount of individuals that you will encounter in an online space, and the mental + emotional capacity to treat each posting avatar as someone to be curious about gets zapped quickly. In real life, I can slow down and be more curious about the individual who has a lot of other elements to them as a human besides this topic we discovered we disagree on. But the ways in which we gather online are typically only around That Thing that is being discussed and we apparently disagree on.

I would really love to see you guys do an episode on Thrawn, examining how to be a good, effective leader. My favourite villain in the Star Wars Universe!

Wayward Ace

I do have a Star Wars related hill that I will absolutely die on. The sequel trilogy should have been Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy. It could have been done instead of the prequel trilogy, when the actors were still young enough to do it, or it’s could have been in Clone War style animation, which for that story, I would absolutely accept!

TPK

All 3 trilogies are better if you just separate them out in your brain and take them in sets. imo. They all have their good and bad points. But the prequels are the best. Not because the writing is stellar, or the effects are better. I just think the story is a better story. Could absolutely have been done better though. Obi Wan Kenobi is good. If you accept that its backbone is a character study. The rest is just fluff of how you see him evolve. The Clone Wars is great for the most part. But it’s a ton of episodes and there are definitely filler episodes in there. 10/10 don’t care which is good or bad. I love it all.

Where the hell did this beard come from?! It's majestic

I was never into the OG series but I love the new Disney shows. Every time they come out with a new series I think im not going to be into it but I end up giving them a chance and really enjoy them. I noticed you guys didnt mention “The Acolyte”, Personally I loved it but I know it gets some things wrong, tho I will say I think people are being nit picky because the Star Wars universe seems pretty messy to me and plays fast and lose for what is and isnt canon but for whatever reason fans went hard on the hate for the acolyte. Im pretty gutted that the show was canceled. This show was for the girls and I was really wanting the enemy’s to lovers plot.

BlackAdder

Personally Obi-wan is by far my favourite live action star wars series even though I was really sceptical because I thought it will be just pointless fanservice. I absolutely love Obi-wan's character jorney through PTSD and the theme of him helping people and again finding that spark that makes jedi a jedi, that love for people and need to protect them (which is summarised by grand inquisitor in the beggining). It's great how through this realization obi-wan is also regaining his power because jedi's power comes from love and compassion "In the heart od the jedi lies their strenght", it builds greatly on mythology of the force. Also I liked that it didn't make it all about obi-wan objectively failing but showed that it wasn't jedi who failed anakin, it was anakin who failed jedi. I love new characters and I love that they don't use old characters just as fanservice (mostly) but gave them meaningful new stories and ways to develop. I loved obi-wan's relationship with Leia, their chemistry was great she was great and how she also pushed him to try and to find his power was great. Fight with vader is my favourite duel in all of star wars by far, I also liked some of previous fights because they gave me obi-wan who has to fight without force just with his wits and later moments when I for the first time felt like deflecting blasters is actually hard. Also uncle Owen was great. There were so many emotional moments for me. That said I didn't like how they worked with movement in some scenes and there were someunnecessary plotholes. To surviving stabbing I'd add that those strong in the dark side survived even being cut in half though it could also be done better imho. Id say inconsistency with what force can do was always there, in OT very little was possible with special effects and in prequels everyone is already much more powerful. That scene with Leia comforting luke was always weird imho since she just lost her parents and whole planet but he lost man he knew for few hours/days. I'm probably a black sheep with andor because for me it's much more inconsistent than kenobi in quality and much less of it is good or great (or more precisely part of what is good isn't good as star wars).

Rich Brendle

I loved Book of Boba. It's a great metaphor for coping through trauma through community. You can only get so far without a tribe.

Avery Hanlon

I'm cracking up that The Acolyte didn't even get a mention. If there's a ever Star Wars story that broke the universe rules...

Ryan3000

I loved star wars as a kid but hate it as an adult, because it lost its luster due to George Lucas butchering the originals. I want the original version of the original trilogy. Some the stuff put out since then I have enjoyed, and some not so much. If others are just happy to have more star wars content, then that's fine by me. But I will always be angry at Lucas for ruining what I consider a masterpiece, and for refusing to even give fans the option of having the unaltered versions of what we watched in our childhood.

Great episode, thanks for this guys! My son and I love Star Wars, my son probably falls somewhere between Alan and Jono 😂 With Obi-Wan, I personally loved seeing his interactions with young Leia. Seeing how spunky she was, and how she started off, what a young girl could do if given the tools and resources to become strong. It’s then not by accident that she becomes a leader by ‘A New Hope’. Even though there are inconsistencies with how Leia and Luke dealt with Obi-Wan’s death, I love the feature of a strong young girl, who became a strong woman 💪🏼 With loving parents, especially a dad who raised her well, and an uncle figure in Obi-Wan who not only wasn’t shocked or afraid by strong girls, but welcomed it. I think this aspect of the series reflects current society in how some men don’t know what to do with women that aren’t completely dependent on men for survival or existence, and feel less than in front of strong women. As a female veteran, I see too often where men feel the need to put down men to feel like a man, and I look forward to the day when that is less so. Here’s to seeing more strong women and female figures in Star Wars!

Ayesha Ali

I completely agree with Alan, especially with "may the odds be ever in your favor :) Caveat, though, that I only managed to suffer through the prequels once or twice, and have only watched the first episode of any of the TV shows. (they always start the same way and I'm bored within five minutes) My sister loves them, though, and we just went to Galaxy's edge in florida which was epic.

Nova Villmark

I had no idea there was SO MUCH star wars stuff out there! So many shows...

KrissyArtist

I want this for all the major franchises even ones you agree on!

SPOILER ALERT: I wonder if the idea of Darth Vader being Luke's father came about because of David Prowse. On Netflix is (or was) "I Am Your Father," about how David Prowse was forced out and the backlash he suffered from being suspected of leaking the big reveal (he didn't). In it, they show an interview with the SW cast in which they asked opinions on where the next movie might go if there was a sequel. This was shortly after SW's meteoric rise, so Empire was still a few years away. He said it would be interesting if Vader and Luke were father and son, and the tension it would create since each could not kill the other because of their relationship. Prowse didn't remember saying it. Prowse was purposely kept out of the studio, with guards being posted, for the filming of Luke removing Vader's helmet. So, the director reshot that scene with Prowse. By that point, he had lost his West Country accent and sounded like Darth Vader.

I think some of the difference between how the Jedi were portrayed between the originals and the prequels can easily be explained, in story, as being romanticized, wanting the past to be more like how they pictured the Jedi Order should have been. (Of course when I resume watching, Jono captures this much more succinctly.) I would add, they even did not want to pass along the flaws of the past to Luke so he could have a fresh start. I did enjoy the movies, they are Star Wars after all. However, I agree with Alan, I can see what Lucas was trying to do, but it was executed poorly. When I introduced my daughter to the prequels (after the originals), I didn't have the heart to tell her that it was socially unacceptable to like Jar Jar Binks.

thebluecastle

I was expecting kind of a different conclusion to this—that you can agree on the finer (or even major) points but land in different places about what that means for the whole, as other parts of your values, personality, experience, etc interact with those opinions. I think you were both a little too harsh on yourselves there. But I enjoyed digging down into your personal opinions on something I also love (though I’m definitely more Team Alan in this subject 😬), and also the discussion about how to disagree productively!

Jennifer C

I would like more of this, perhaps with the Star Trek franchise 🙏❤️🙏❤️

Arrendis

So, something that gets overlooked a bunch about the "Goodbye... Darth" in Obi-Wan: He's not using it as a name. It's still a title, and Obi-Wan calls Vader 'Darth' there instead of Vader as more of the dismissal of him. He's letting go of the idea that this was Anakin, or even the angry, lost 'Vader' he fought on Mustafar. What's left... is just another Sith Lord. Could be anyone. Just 'Darth' whoever. And that, in turn, reframes the moment of 'Only a master of evil, Darth' in ANH into a 'you're still nothing special to me now' diss.

DontEatMePlz

Finally someone who appreciates Solo and doesn't think Rogue One was the be all end all of SW movies. Thank you, Alan!!! (personally I dislike Rogue One a lot more, mostly because the romance plot feels entirely unearned, but that's just me)

Melissa

I respectfully disagree with your omission - The Acolyte. (Was that agreeably disagreeable? 😁) We were beginning to see something they've only slightly touched on, a humanized point of view of The Sith. No evil cackles with sinister grins, no ulterior motives, just the truth. Awww, but how did Qimir see the truth? It was going to be a complete immersion into their world - the causation, the culture, the reasoning. I'm so disappointed it's not going forward. As for Andor, I wholeheartedly agree. In fact, Andor is SO good, I think it's the best Star Wars installation, ahem, even better than the original trilogy. NOW somebody's gonna wanna come get me 😄
