Alan:

Hello Heroes!

May-cember is upon us! Hide the women and children! Save yourselves! There is no pity in May-cember, only suffering! (People with kids get it) Didn’t have a lot of time for myself this month. But I did get some stuff in!

What I’m reading!

MORE Before and Afters Magazine (Various Issues) - by Ian Failes. This is a spiritual successor to Cinefex magazine, and is a great resource for VFX professionals, but also just for people who are interested in the filmmaking process. Ian does in-depth reporting, either on a film, or on a VFX topic across multiple films. He also hosts a couple podcasts, and just seems like a lovely guy.

LightBringer - by Pierce Brown. Another in the Red Rising series. This felt like a return to form for Pierce Brown, after several books of increasingly-dark-but-also-all-our-heroes-are-losing torture. I mean, I get it: Hurt your heroes. Makes the story more compelling. But at a certain point, it just got kinda too much. This wasn’t lighter, necessarily, but at least it felt like we were progressing towards some kind of endgame, instead of just piling up atrocities. What I mean to say is: I like all these books. I love some of them. This one was quite good!

What I’m watching!

Andor S2 (Disney+). I’m only halfway through, so no spoilers. This is just as gripping as the first (spectacular) season, though (again, halfway through) it seems like it’s not making as much progress? I’m still absolutely enthralled by it. Not happy about watching it as a playbook for how to undermine a fascist dictatorship, which seems increasingly relevant where I live…

The Studio (Apple TV+). Like I said, haven’t had much time. I’m still working on it. Really happy the show got a second season, I’m loving this one. It’s still incredibly crass and a bit mean, and it fills a whole I didn’t realize I’ve been missing since VEEP. Angry, venal, stupid people trying to lead large teams and do intelligent things? I’ll watch that all day. As long as the insults are creative. And they ARE!

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. I’ve loved this series since I saw the first one at 15 years old. It’s wild to think I’ve had an entire adulthood since then, and Tom is still doing all his own stunts. Anyway, it was… fine. Too bloated, and tried too hard to tie everything together from all the other films. Didn’t need that, would have worked better without it. Ethan Hunt doesn’t need everything to be related. He can just save the world one last time, then disappear into a crowd.

What I’m playing!

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. I finally beat it! 80-ish hours. Didn’t 100%, but I had a lot of fun! I’m gonna play Indiana Jones, then jump back in for the DLC. I liked this a lot! Mainly, I just liked playing video games again. It’s been way too long.

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi everyone! Wow, this month has absolutely flown by! REALLY enjoyed catching Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning with a bunch of you in Emeryville, California when we were there to film at Pixar. I love the stunts and the story really grabbed me, even at three hours long!I also finally saw A Minecraft Movie which... is definitely among the films that have ever been made. Honestly, it had some laughs, but it was also painful for me to sit through. Does that mean I'm just too old?I really enjoyed catching up on The Last of Us for our channel. Poignant, shocking, profound, and disturbing. Some good episodes coming out from that!As for books, I'm reading Schindler's List right now, the book which inspired the film. What heartbreaking and inspiring history, with real lessons for today. At Alan's insistence I finally watched Waterworld (1995), and folks, it was a delight. When it's good it's very good, but even more importantly, when it's bad it's still good! Also, Thunderbolts*! That movie fits our channel like a glove. Episode coming soon(ish).

What about y'all? What are you all watching this month?

Waterworld is a damn masterpiece. No notes. It was wonderful catching Final Reckoning with you guys! Absolutely agree that it was often bloated, and felt like they spent the first hour as a YouTube video to catch up those who didn't rewatch the original movies. However, I still greatly enjoyed it. Seeing it with the Dolby Atmos sound system was a-freaking-mazing. I was physically and mentally exhausted by the time the movie was done, yet still buzzing. Worth every second 😊.

I have been reading some Daredevil Graphic Novels and comics thanks to Marvel Unlimited plus. I have to say I am adoring the character. I have to say I think he is my favorite marvel character. Out of popular Marvel I still really enjoy spiderman. I did read the Spider Gwen comics and I have to say they are really good! It makes me want either a live action version of her or for Marvel and Sony to give her, her own animated movie. I haven't really been reading anything else besides that lately. Watching I have been watching The Last of Us season 2. Overall I like it they made some changes from the games I really liked and only a couple I feel didn't work. Some characters got more development then others. Some needed it, and some needed more I will say. Overall though I am happy with it and excited for season 3. It has been interesting seeing viewers who haven't played the game have a similar reaction to this season. It does have me worried a bit for the future of this show because knowing what happens in the game makes the story very compelling. Its not perfect I still prefer the Last of Us one but Part 2 is also really good. Gaming I have not really been gaming this month, but I am planning on it soon. I did replay a bit of the witcher 3 because of the 10 year anniversary. Still love that game. I am excited for The Witcher 4, and the remake of The Witcher 1. I am waiting in August for Metal Gear Solid Delta I am super excited for it! I've mainly been busy working on some adult things I've been needing to do, and taking some time to myself because of my mental health. May was a month for personal growth for me, but it was also some tough mental growth at the same time. Hope everyone had a great may, and has an even better June. I am glad the cold weather is gone but I am not prepared for the heat.

It was fun how Final Reckoning tied into all the other Mission Impossible movies except for 2. All that one appeared as during the flashbacks was "Hey, remember how cool Ethan Hunt looked riding that motorcycle with his long hair and the leather jacket?" That's really all we need from the second entry.

omg thunderbolts*! yes I hope you guys do a video on bob!! (side note but I'm not falling for the Sam and Bucky divorce propaganda.) I've been reading for work and not for pleasure lately, but I've been enjoying the new series of taskmaster :))

Alan, no spoilers, but once you watch 9 episodes of Andor S2, you will understand why the first half is dragging.

We watched Mission Impossible opening night because we were on vacation and had been rewatching the last few each evening, so our last evening we did the new one and enjoyed it greatly! I agree it was a little much with the flashbacks, but I thought it was quite the nod to 30-year fans. Also started catching back up on Criminal Minds: Evolution, and been going through Leverage: Redemption with the hubby. Been reading The Seven Sisters series (pretty good, some better than others), The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic (fun), The Teller of Small Fortunes (quite enjoyable!), and listened to People Pleaser and Big Dumb Eyes on audiobook, both were excellent.

Waterworld is what Hollywood *should* be looking to remake: Conceptually interesting ideas that suffered in execution. In fact, it would thrive as a limited series drama in the streaming era. Imagine them only finding land as a cliffhanger at the end of season 1?

Watching: Leverage Redemption season 3 as it comes out week to week. I love that "found family" of thieves so much! Just finished season 1 of NCIS Origins and was keeping up with Found but now it's canceled. Re-watching: Elementary because I really enjoy the friendship of Sherlock and Joan. Grimm is one I watch at least once a year. I love the twist on familiar fairy tales and the main characters are people I want to be friends with. Reading: Jeremy Renner's My Next Breath. I'm still amazed he survived all of those injuries and I cry every few pages. Matthew Perry's Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. I haven't picked it up in awhile but enjoyed what I've read so far. Nate Bargatze's My Big Dumb Eyes. I love his stand up comedy and figured this will be equally enjoyable. So far, I'm right.

Clay

The Red Rising books are pretty good! Loved the first book.

Kurt

Finally got around to watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, I'm halfway through season 1 so far and I'm liking it. No new books, just rereading DC's Doomsday Clock and The Fall of Gondolin. Gaming-wise, I'm trying to platinum GoW: Ragnarök, and it is kicking my butt like I owed it money.

Ann Brookens

No one has mentioned watching Murderbot! The books are amazing and so far the show is doing well. They are expanding on some things the books didn't and, so far, doing it well!

Beutimus

I recently read The Giver for the first time. Very though provoking for a "kids" book. Watched Thunderbolts* recently and really loved it.

I love Andor so much, and I sort of love that it leaves me wanting more even though that’s impossible. So often, it feels like tv series goes on for a longer time than planned just because it’s successful, and I’m happy that didn’t happen to Andor (even though I think it’s sort of the other way around, I read somewhere that it was meant to be 5 seasons). I’ve finished the latest season of doctor who which had some fine moments. But I’ll never get over the times of David Tennant and Matt Smith 🥲 I also read this fantastic book ”Piranesi” by Susanna Clarke. About a man who’s whole world is a huge house full of different halls, sort of like a labyrinth. He shares this world with only one other person he calls ”the Other”. The Other calls him Piranesi, but he is pretty sure that is not really his name. Still, he can’t recall his actual name either. An incredible mix of a mystery and sort of a fantasy but kind of a thriller as well I suppose? I very warmly recommend it.

Reading: I wish I was doing better with reading. It’s my goal to read more this summer! I was however gifted the first book of Stormlight Archives by my cousin, and I’ve started to read it. As a BYU student I feel it’s my duty, lol. Movies: I've been watching the Hunger Games with my sisters; before now I had only ever seen the first 2 so I'm excited to watch Songbirds & Snakes, and finish the Mocking jay movies. We're having a lot of fun with them! I also really want to watch Thunderbolts* in time for the upcoming video! TV: I really hope you make episodes for Andor and/or (ha...) Severance. I recently finished watching Andor with friends. My jaw was on the FLOOR for eps 8-10. I also binged Severance by myself to fill the void, and it was right up my alley! Definitely needs a rewatch though because I'm a little too dense to understand what was actually going on lol
