Alan:

Hello Heroes!

What I’m reading!

Ship of the Line - by CS Forester. Back to the adventures of Horatio Hornblower! Took a few months off and came roaring back with all kinds of mayhem and gentlemanly derring-do. This one’s great.

Flying Colors - by CS Forester. The third book in the initial Horblower trilogy (ended up being like 12 books, all told). This one is weird. He’s imprisoned, escapes, adventures, romance, and then… the book ends with him getting basically everything he ever wanted, and… he’s depressed about it. I wonder if this was Forester writing about his own phenomenal success with these books, riches, awards, and the fact that, at the end… does any of it have any meaning? Weird ending.

What I’m watching!

Andor S2 (Disney+). It’s taking forever to get through this season, because I’m watching with my family, and we’re busy, and we’re also watching movies to prep for our next shoot. But it’s so so so good. We just watched the (spoiler) in episode 8 and HOLY CRAP (SPOILER!!!). Incredible stuff guys.

ELIO - Okay, I know we did an episode about this, and we got invited out to Pixar to talk with the filmmakers, and yada yada yada. But seriously, I’m begging you: go see this in theaters. This is the best Pixar movie in a long time (and they’ve been consistently good)! It’s so touching and heartfelt, and sweet, and funny, and GORGEOUS. Please please please go see this and tell your friends. I want studios to keep taking risks on original stories like this.

What I’m playing!

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This is SUCH a good game. Absolutely nails the mix of puzzle solving, action, and general Indiana Jones-ness required. I love the world of Indiana Jones, and this game is the most fun I’ve had in it since the first three movies. (And I like Crystal Skull and many of the other games!)

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hey all! June has really flown by for me, but I've made myself some time to go see a bunch of summer movies and do a little patriotic reading.Lilo & Stitch was fine, if uninspired and imcomparable to the original animated version. Ballerina was as good as any John Wick movie except the first one. The Phoenician Scheme is Wes Anderson lite: it's funny, it's quirky, but there wasn't a lot of meaning there to latch onto, in my opinion. Karate Kid: Legends doesn't stray from formula, but there's a straightforward earnestness to it that I dug (plus, Joshua Jackson is super charming in it). How to Train Your Dragon is a four-star remake of a five-star classic. The Life of Chuck took me by surprise with its unconventional structure, life-affirming message, and the glorious sight of Tom Hiddleston dancing. 28 Years Later is easily my favorite film in that series, grotesque and beautiful and horrifying and uplifting all at once. Elio is another strong Pixar outing and deserves to be a word-of-mouth hit.As for reading, I'm enjoying the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1776 by David McCullough, about the Revolutionary War and the formation of the United States. I'm not always "proud to be an American" and I don't "always know I'm free," BUT I adore the ideals my country was founded on. This book is rekindling my sometimes-battered desire to keep fighting for the dream. What about you all? What are your reading or watching?

June has been mostly uneventful, since I'm cracking down on saving money for my planned week-long SLC getaway around FanX. I'm really looking forward to exploring more of the area while I'm there! I did allow myself the splurge of going on quite the Jackie Chan journey! I love martial arts movies, especially the cheesy ones, and it's been an honest pleasure to watch many of his Hong Kong projects. Supercop, Drunken Master 2, and Who Am I are particular favorites. I also took myself on a self-date and enjoyed seeing Elio at Alamo Drafthouse! I cried. Many times. No shame. For television, I rewatched and finished all of Ted Lasso finally! Excellent show to watch for Men's Mental Health Awareness month. I also started Lucifer again with the goal to actually watch it from start to finish this time around. I'm just about done with Real Love in Dating by Dr. Greg Baer. Lots of wonderful insights, though it does get pretty repetitive around the halfway mark. It was also written 20 years ago, so it has been both charming and amusing to compare some of the technological changes from then and now. Overall, a good read for anyone who has ever struggled with dating... or never actually truly dated before, like me 😅.

Watching: Greatly enjoyed watching the first two seasons of Tracker, it's a fun show! Also tried out NCIS: Origins....as a long-time NCIS fan, it was a bit meh that they spent so much time on Gibbs' 'how did we end up here' because I already knew all of it, but I enjoyed the case of the week and getting to know the rest of his team, so I'll probably give season 2 a chance and see if it gets better. I'm also rewatching/catching up on the OG NCIS starting from season 15 (I cross-stitch during shows I don't have to super pay attention to and I'm really trying to get back to my current project so I went back further than I really needed to lol). Also saw How to Train Your Dragon because it's one of my husband's favorite movies, and we both agreed that it was fun. He thinks the animated is better though lol. We also discovered Wednesday on Netflix. I know. We're late. But we BLASTED through it in like three days and LOVED it, then happily noted we only have to wait a couple months for the new season! So maybe not a bad thing that we came to the party late lol. Reading: Not much reading this month because I was watching so much stuff, but I did listen to God, Greed, and the (Prosperity) Gospel, which was a beautiful beatdown of the absolute poison that is the prosperity gospel. Also am trying to do all the Goodreads reading challenges, and this month's challenge was Rainbow Reads, so I read Brighter than Scale, Swifter than Flame by Neon Yang - it somehow had too much and too little detail, made a lot of time jumps that made it feel uneven, so even though the storyline itself was interesting, I didn't really enjoy the book. I was pushed into reading The Amalfi Curse by Sarah Penner for the other summertime Goodreads challenge, which was Armchair Explorer and that was a great one! The couple of Sarah Penner books I've read thus far have been pretty great. Going to try to balance out watching and reading a little better next month, it will probably help that there will be a new set of Goodreads challenges because they give a new set every quarter and have a monthly one too.

Yes!! Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is so fun! I’m currently replaying it! Without spoilers, my favorite things about the game is the use of true historical or religious knowledge for (some) puzzles. Indiana Jones inspired me to peruse a history career and I’m so happy about the effort put into this game. Also, Troy Baker’s Harrison Ford impression is amazing!

I also have "1776" on my reading as well. Though currently I'm reading "Lexington and Concord: The Battle Heard Round the World" by George C. Daughan. It discusses how the battle came to be and the events in which led up to it. I highly recommend it.

Reading: How to Suffer Outside by Diana Helmuth Watching: rewatching the Netflix Daredevil Series because it's been years and it's so good

Reading: Anna Karenina. Holy cow. This book is a beast. It lived in my TBR pile for about a decade, and I'm honestly glad I waited to read it until I had some more life experience under my belt. Watching: Mostly, I've been watching youtube stuff. I recently started watching Kall Me Kris and Celina SpookyBoo do their paranormal investigations, which has been absolutely riveting. Playing: mostly mobile games. It's been, like, 6 or 7 years, and I'm still hooked on Stardew Valley.

I love how they keep the way they list their recommendations instead of looking uniform. It showcases their personality.

i started black sails recently and man what a good show it is

I’ve started Murderbot and it’s quite fun. Not that many episodes in though, so can’t say too much about it (but I love Alexander Skarsgård sooooo). Been reading Lore by Alexandra Bracken. The hunger games meets Greek mythology, it was pretty good! You can’t be a mythology purist but it was handled as well as it can be, I think. Basically, it’s about Zeus punishing the gods by making them mortal for a week every 7 years and mortals then hunt them (if they kill a god they inherit their power). Of course, there’s a maniac who wants to kill all gods and rule everyone and a young girl who tries to stop him. Sort of the classic YA set up but I like it lol

28 Years Later was really good , I think you’ll enjoy it Alan & Jono , I’ve watched the other 2 of those movies , I was pretty much crying into my partners hand , can’t wait to see your reviews on it 🙂

You have to watch Kpop demon hunters! Its surprisingly really good. The story is great and the songs are peak, its worth the watch.

I just watched Elio with my girlfriend last night! We both massively enjoyed it and I will be sharing the film recommendation with my coworkers and friends!

ANDOR. Trauma recovery, Victor Frakl's Logotherapy, and how various characters react to the overwhelming sense of powerlessness. Senator Mothma would be a good deep-dive character, since she's trying her best to do what she believes is right while being hemmed in by enormous social pressures.
