Alan:

Hello Heroes!

July was a crazy month for me. Lots of family trips (reunions and whatnot) along with the usual stuff like writing a movie. Still managed to read and watch some stuff though!

What I’m reading!

The Making of THE SHINING - by JW Rinzler & Lee Unkrich. JW Rinzler wrote the best behind the scenes film books I’ve ever read. He passed away (cancer) a few years ago, and this was his last book. It’s a masterpiece of depth, information, and storytelling. About a movie that I don’t like, and a filmmaker I think is probably the most overrated filmmaker in the history of the medium. Reading this book didn’t change my mind. What a wild ride that was. I just got more and more annoyed, the entire time fascinated by the navel-gazing and overwrought nonsense of it all. Yeesh.

The Professor and the Madman - by Simon Winchester. The true story of a convicted murderer, an American, who contributed more citations and quotations than anyone else to the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary. I learned more about philology than I ever thought I’d want to know. And I’m glad I did. This was a stupendous read! Highly recommend the audiobook. It’s read by the author, who has the most British voice I’ve ever heard in my life. I’ve been to England multiple times. This man wins.

Pacific - by Simon Winchester. I was so charmed by the previous book that I took another crack at this author. He attempts to tell the entire story of the Pacific Ocean, its peoples, and its place in the present and future of our world. And he kinda nails it. Seriously. I know Winchester is a bestselling author and has been for a long time, but I’m just discovering him, and you know what? I think I’m going to read every book he ever wrote.

What I’m watching!

Andor S2 (Disney+). Finally finished it. Then we watched Rogue One. The show is some of the best television ever made. Seriously. I don’t think it’s just recency bias talking. It’s a towering achievement. Rich, complex characters. A complicated, but understandable narrative. Gut-twisting tension. Solid humor (though not too much of it) even before K-2SO shows up. I’m excited to go through the whole series again, probably in a year’s time. I love this show.

Rogue One - I did enjoy Rogue One more on this watch than I have in the past, but the show can’t save the movie from its flaws. I’ve talked about this before. I think the film has a GREAT first half. And a very good second half. I just feel like they’re two different movies. Jyn and Cassian make a HUGE change halfway through, that’s unearned, and frankly doesn’t work for me. There’s a lot to love in that movie, but as a whole, it’s a bit of a failure for me.

What I’m playing!

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. I heard a rumor that there was a remaster in the works for this game, and because I’m dumb, I thought, “Huh. I haven’t played that in forever. I’ll just take a look.” I’m like 20 hours into it now. And yes, I will buy and 100% the remaster when it comes out, even though I’ve just played the game a ton. Why do you ask?

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi everyone! Jonathan here, in the middle of a cross-country move. So forgive me for being short and sweet this time. Great month for movies! Jurassic World: Rebirth had a mediocre script and weak characters but was saved by excellent actors and Gareth Edwards directing the hell out of the action and suspense. Superman was everything I hoped it would be as well as so many things I didn't know I needed. Probably my favorite movie of the year so far. I cannot wait to do an episode on this. Fantastic Four is another episode waiting to happen! The cast is great, but Vanessa Kirby steals the movie. Powerful and wholesome family dynamics anchor a really fun Marvel movie.Right now I'm reading Uncle Tom's Cabin, which had such a huge influence on the abolitionist movement of the 1800s. I've heard about it my whole life, but this is my first time reading it. Very profound. What about you all? What are you watching and reading this month?

So so so so glad Jono liked Superman!!! After the Christopher Reeve episode, I was so curious what he would think. Cannot wait for that episode

Surprised by the idea of a Black Flag remaster. I played the PS4 version a few years ago and it didn't seem particularly out-of-date graphics-wise to me? Then again, I'm more of a patient gamer, so I might be out-of-touch with the cutting edge stuff. Hopefully they'll also cut out some of the mandatory sneaking missions

I saw Superman four times, a first for me since Inside Out, the fourth time being my first theater double-feature since I was a teen to see Fantastic Four that same day. I can absolutely say that Superman is my favorite movie of this year so far. I cried all four times seeing it. Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm in Fantastic Four had me bawling in the theater and the entire hour and a half drive home. Both such wonderful movies. Can't wait to see the episodes! I also watched Arrival for the first time for the channel. Thank you for bringing my attention to a movie that perfectly captures my communication kink and why it's so important to me. I finished Real Love by Dr. Greg Baer this month. While repetitive, the core message of the book is profound. I have been doing what I can to try to implement it in my own life, along with the other books I have read since discovering you guys. Thank you for all the things. Here's to hoping August is a little more smooth sailing for us all, and I look forward to seeing you guys in the land of corn!

YAYYYY SUPERMAN YAY!!! i went to see it with my dad (a huge Christopher reeve fan) and he LOVED it, I heard him whisper "wow" when there was that beautiful shot of superman in the cloud of dust, and he sounded like a little boy :') i feel like me and my dad were simultaneously ourselves and our younger selves while watching it. a lovely experience :))

Jono, I am once again going to recommend that you pick up All Star Superman. It's not a long graphic novel, you can read it in a couple hours, but it is probably the greatest Superman story ever written, you can get the collection on Amazon, and I think it will PROFOUNDLY stir you emotionally.

I highly recommend that you read this book: “The Secret Life of a Cemetery: The Wild Nature and Enchanting Lore of Père-Lachaise" by Benoît Gallot. This has been one of my favorite books of 2025 so far. Gallot has been the curator of Père-Lachaise since 2018. Whether or not you’ve been to Paris, you may know about Père-Lachaise. As we know, many tourists visit there because it is also home to the remains of numerous famous people (examples: Jim Morrison, Édith Piaf, Chopin, etc). However, what is lesser known is that Père-Lachaise remains a functioning cemetery to this day, working with all people and families on many funeral-related operations. Gallot provides facts and information about the origins, history, and lore of Père Lachaise, but I love how he also discusses the animal and plant life surrounding the area. In 2011, the Paris City Council enacted a biodiversity plan that required all Parisian cemeteries to stop using pesticides. Since the removal of pesticides in 2015, the cemetery has become a home for a variety of plants and animals. A place that is mainly associated with death is filled with so much life. It’s also part memoir in a way because Gallot comes from a family of funerary stonemasons, and he writes about how he ended up at Père Lachaise. I cannot recommend this enough. I plan to buy the original French copy as well. Check out his Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/la_vie_au_cimetiere/

The pain of hearing Alan say The Shining is overrated

What I am Reading I am currently on the Daredevil Bendis comic book run and loving it. I have also been keeping up with the Witcher comics which I have been loving as always. Playing- I am finishing my 100% completion of Spiderman on PS5. One of my favorite games of all time, and probably one of the best Superhero games as well. Very much reminds me of Batman Arkham City and Asylum. Highly recommend for anyone who is a spiderman fan. Also lots of fun easter eggs for street level superheros who live in New York. Probably going to move onto Spiderman 2 until later next month when MGS Delta (Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake) comes out. Going to try to read more novels. Watching I finally watched Superman in theaters on Sunday and I have to say I loved it. I am a huge fan of the Christopher Reeves Superman films (1 and 2 mainly) it very much had that same tone while being a more modern film. I noticed James Gunn was inspired by the animated Superman show, and Smallville and I love that you can feel that in this movie. Definitely one of my favorite DC movies of all time now. This is Superman! Its probably going to be my second favorite Superman film just below Superman 1. I finally watched the spiderman 90s animated show and I have to say I loved as a DC comics kid growing up I missed out on a lot of the marvel shows and now I am trying to catch up. I get the hype now. Same with the comics Marvel and Dc both have really strong comic book stories just find a superhero you like and I promise you someone on the internet will give you a reading list. Hope everyone had a wonderful July, and a exciting August. Cannot wait for fall!!!

I think The Professor and the Madman is called The Surgeon of Crowthorne in the UK. And yes, speaking as an English person, Simon Winchester does have a very British voice

I want so much to want to watch Superman and Fantastic Four, and I just can't because my husband and I both have such bad superhero fatigue. I kind of can't stand to watch superhero movies that we already love it's so bad. Hopefully there will come a day when we're past it but Marvel and DC just aren't welcome in our world right now tbh. Reading: LOTS of books because the new quarterly Goodreads challenges appeared! I also have discovered T. Kingfisher. I feel similarly to what Alan said about Simon Winchester - I think I will read every book this author has written. Swordheart, Nettle & Bone, A Sorceress Comes to Call, and Thornhedge - all by T. Kingfisher, not a bad one in the bunch and I have more by her in my TBR pile. Also read Elder Race & Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky (can only do his standalone ones, when it's a series he suffers from bloating every book ever). Also got on a Rachel Hauck kick - Meet Me at the Starlight, To Love A Prince, and To Save A King. Joe Abercrombie's Half a King, Half the World, and Half a War were a bit dark and dreary but still a fun ride. Sprinkled in between all these were A Fellowship of Games & Fables - J. Penner, Freelancers of Neptune - Jacob Holo (VERY fun, reminded me of Firefly!), Misery Hates Company - Elizabeth Hobbs (will continue reading this series for sure), and The Housemaid - Freida McFadden (it knocked out two of the Goodreads challenges and was an interesting read but I probably won't do any more by this author - you can only do that twist once). Watching: Still working through my rewatching of NCIS. Hubby and I watched Doom At Your Service which he loved, said it was his favorite K-drama he's seen thus far (it is in my top 5 too). We started one of my #1 K-dramas, While You Were Sleeping (yes I have two, no the tie cannot be broken lol). I also JUST finally caught up to the Mean Girls musical and WHERE HAVE I BEEN! That movie was hilarious and fabulous and I really wish I'd gone to see it when it toured through our city!

Reading: How to Suffer Outside by Diana Helmuth Watching: Andor Season 1 Playing: Red Dead Redemption

I've just read, of all things, a Magic the Gathering supplemental fiction, "Edge of Eternities." A touching tale of a poor space pirate who's spent years and all but their most unreasonably loyal crew looking for their cat, with a fascinating backdrop of a curious star system with a multitude of species inhabiting five or so planets and the two galactic superpowers fighting over its failing sun which they variously want to turn into a black hole and revitalize for religious reasons - these religions both portrayed as well underbuilt, compassionate, enlightened philosophies trying their best to cope with the heat death of the universe. Featuring much fewer magical card games than you might think.

Superman is now on my top 5 favorites list. In a way it's a therapy for me. So many reasons why that is, but I don't want to bore anyone with them. Supes has been there for me since I was 8, and he always will be. I plan on seeing the movie a few more times. It's that flipping good!

Mary Flynn

Philology and murder? I need to read that book immediately!

I've been on a big CCR binge since watching the Trainwrecords episode on their final album. I read both the unauthorized history of the band and John Fogerty's memoir 😅 And, of course, listening to their music.

Recent movies I've watched are Superman, Fantastic Four, and Together. Together was a brilliant and terrifying horror movie. Also really liked Superman. My boyfriend and I have K-Pop Demon Hunters on our to-watch list. Been reading through the 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' series. It's a wild trip.

I think the issue with rouge one was that the had a great idea great acting with great characters but forced it all into a movie runtime. That why some part feel unearned or rushed andor the show had some room to breath. It make me wonder what rouge one would have been like if it got to be a 3 episode arch. Know that when it came out a live action Starwars tv show was a crazy idea and it had to be movie. And I love the movie, But how good Andor was makes me think about all the possibilities that could have been for the story.
