Alan:

Hello Heroes!

The dog days of summer. I like dogs. I like days. Why don’t I like August more?

What I’m reading!

Ancillary Sword - by Ann Leckie. Hard sci-fi in a weird distant future universe populated primarily by humans, with sentient shipboard AIs. I read the first book in this series a few months ago and was intrigued. The story in this one was… not what I expected. The world is a grand space opera, and this book was a much smaller, almost procedural story on one outpost world. It was fun. But a weird way for our main character to spend her time.

Project Hail Mary - by Andy Weir. I love this book. I’ve read it before but decided to listen to it on my roadtrip to Iowa for the shoot we did with Beck/Woods. And man. What a great book! I’m confident the movie will be great too, though I will no doubt be sad about all the stuff they’ll inevitably have to cut out to make their runtime.

The Way of Kings - by Brandon Sanderson. I read this when it first came out. But I’m back. I only read the first two books, then decided to wait until the whole series was done to actually read them. Too long waiting between books to keep up with it. I like these books, though not as much as most other Brando Sando stuff. Feels bloated to me. But I still really like it!

What I’m watching!

I honestly don’t remember anything I’ve watched this month that wasn’t for the show. I’m so so so tired. (Just got back from driving 40+ hours in 5 days. I’ll be fine once I sleep another 2 nights.)

What I’m playing!

Sail Forth. It’s a delightful little indie game. I’m sailing around occasionally fighting pirates. I have no idea how to progress in the game, and I kinda don’t care.

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi everyone! August has flown by with a cross-country move, my kids starting school in a new state, a Cinema Therapy shoot, a Mended Light shoot, and a trip to Davenport for a CT event at The Last Picture House. With all of this going on, I've not had much spare free time for movies, TV, or reading!BUT I did see The Naked Gun and a sing-along-screening of K-Pop Demon Hunters. The former was very dumb but got me laughing a lot. The latter is hilarious, inspiring, and full of catchy tunes (yes, an episode is on the way). As for books, I just started The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley. I look forward to learning more about this central figure of the Civil Rights Movement. Maybe I'll pair it with the Denzel/Spike Lee movie.

What have you been watching/reading?

Reading: Sanderson, also! I'm slowly making my way through Isles of the Emberdark while ignoring my teetering TBR pile lol. Watching: I watched quite a few movies for the first time this month. My favorite were some Japanese movies that were being shown at Alamo Drafthouse in honor of the new game from the creators of Ghost of Tsushima. I adore martial arts movies in general, so to see Lady Snowblood (1973) and 13 Assassins (2010) in theaters was AWESOME. Oh! And The Chosen. Suuuuuch a great show. Hanging out with you guys in Davenport was a blast! Loved helping out with the line again and meeting more fans. It's a genuine blast to hear people's stories 😊. See you guys again next month at FanX!

Also, I usually am not into KPop, but I absolutely enjoyed KPop Demon Hunters so much! Great story, great themes, and the soundtrack SLAPS!

August has been an interesting month for me for sure. This month I watched You're Friendly Neighborhood spiderman which is amazing! The animation is incredible with a great homage to spiderman comic books. This show fixes the problem I had with the Tom Holland and Tony Stark Relationship. (Highky looking forward to Brand New Day by the way). I also watched the Extended Cut of Spiderman No Way Home. I have to say it is superior to the Theatrical cut. It adds some much needed scenes that fix some of the plot in my opinion. Also another fun comic book cameo scene for comic book fans. Highly recommend if you like the original. Also watched the extended cut of Dances With Wolves also superior to the theatrical release. This movie is flawed for sure but still enjoyable I feel but I understand people's issues with it. It is similar to Lord of The Rings in that it cuts a lot of important plot points that is not in the original release. I have been showing my friend The Indiana Jones movies, he has never seen them before. It is so fun to re experience a movie series I love through the eyes of someone who hasn't seen it. Reading I have continued my comic book reading. Daredevil Bendis Run is amazing. And I am finally almost finished with it. I have taken a small break and have started reading Spiderman comic books. Notably the first appearance of spiderman, The Night Gwen Stacy Died (Omg shattered my heart.) Also kind of wish Sam Rami had Gwen in the first movie in ways. Sorry not a huge MJ fan. I also read the first appearance of the Punisher as well which is great. (If you can't tell I am trying to be prepared for Brand New Day). Other than that havent read any novels just havent been in the mood but I am considering reading one going into September. Playing I have finished ny replay of Spiderman, and am Finishing Spiderman 2. I am going to take a break because of Metal Gear Solid Delta coming out tomorrow. I am super excited for this game it is very nostalgic for me. I watched my dad play the metal gear solid games growing up so they will always have a special place in my heart. Looking forward to September I have multiple things to look forward 2. I hope everyone had a great August and has an awesome September!

I've been reading Project Hail Mary, too. I had a marathon of the Mission Impossible movies, including the new one. I watched the season premieres for Peacemaker and Alien: Earth. I haven't been playing much that I haven't played already in one way or another, the Oblivion remaster, Guardians of the Galaxy. The one new game that I played is the Battlefield 6 beta. I'm liking it so far, but I'll probably wait until it goes on sale to buy it.

I just finished rewatching Peacemaker Season 1 before season 2 comes out-still a great show that gets better with rewatches. Twisted Metal on peacock is also great. I’m currently reading 2009’s Superman: Last Son of Krypton run. Great story about supes finally getting his krypton community, then figuring out he doesn’t belong there either.

Oscar Cervantes

I read project hail mary more than two years ago and that's what got me into reading again. Saying I'm hyped for the movie would be an understatement. Also just finished Wind and Truth. Not as good as the others but a lot of crazy events happened to finish off the first arc for the stormlight archive series

Holly✌️

Oh, I'm about to go on a trip and wasn't sure what to listen to since dark romances are probably not acceptable traveling literature. I have listened to Project Hail Mary it's an excellent book, maybe I'll listen to that one

I know what you mean, Alan, about the Way of Kings compared to other Sanderson stuff. I'm 3/4 of the way through and it nearly all has just been exposition/background info. I hope the rest aren't as....just okay?

Reading: A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens Watching: The Punisher (TV Series) and finishing up Daredevil (TV series). Playing: Red Dead Redemption (it takes me a while).

Mishkadias

Movies: I watched “The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of The Desert” for the first time in honor of Terence Stamp (RIP) TV& reading: Finished watching Silo (finally) and couldn’t wait for more; so I read the Trilogy: Wool, Shift, and Dust. The Apple TV series is different enough from the books that it’s worth both watching and reading. It honestly impressed me. Playing: Sonic x Shadow Generations. This scratched an itch I didn’t know I had since SA2 came out in 2001. Got me back into Sonic games and I bought Sonic Frontiers on Ebay for my Switch.

Jessie

I just read "All Systems Red" by Martha Wells. It's the first novella in the Murderbot Diaries and it's so good! If you like Sci-Fi, you will love it. If you don't like Sci-Fi, which I don't, you will love it!

Mary Flynn

I finished the Chronicles of Prydain. I really enjoyed them, but I wish I'd have discovered them when I was actually ten! I also finally watched Get Back. A lot of futzing around, but also completely fascinating?

I am SO excited for the Project Hail Mary movie and will be SO sad for the things that will be cut, but I'm super hype to see Ryan Gosling in this! Flurry of reading the last few days as I finally got in some of the books I was waiting on to complete this quarter's Goodreads reading challenges - Murder By Memory (meh), A Resistance of Witches (read it in 3.5 hours because I COULDN'T STOP), The Tainted Cup & A Drop of Corruption (fascinating world and series, reminds me strongly of Sherlock Holmes with a dark twist, definitely recommend), and now a re-read of Into the Real and Through the Storm so I can read the new book in the TransDimensional Hunter series! Very excited for that. Another book I read this month that I strongly recommend is The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst, it's another superb cozy fantasy and I loved it. Haven't really watched much of anything new BUT my husband and I did (somewhat reluctantly) sit down to watch Thunderbolts and we were pleasantly surprised by how much we liked it! Right up until the cut scene at the end where Marvel just could. not. resist. throwing in a nod to the other movies in the universe. And then we got annoyed at the whole thing all over again lol. Oh and I watched Murderbot on Apple TV and FINALLY a book series to TV show adaptation that a streaming service didn't completely screw up! Very excited for another season of that.

Sarah Rodrigues

I don’t know if either of you have read The Hunger Games books but if you haven’t I’d recommend adding all 5 to your reading list (Trilogy —> Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes —> Sunrise on the Reaping) because they’re much more fleshed out than the films are able to express and the internal narratives of the characters add so much important context ☺️
