How do you know when to help or walk away from a loved one?

In this Patreon-exclusive episode, licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright offer family (brother) therapy to Tonraq and Unalaq from The Legend of Korra. They talk about how spiritual and political fanaticism breaks families apart and what to do when that happens… more timely now than ever.

P.S. The Film Theory collab is coming in early December!

Yay! Y’all are covering The Legend of Korra! It’s kind of messy compared to Avatar, but it’s still beautiful and has a lot of great stories and worldbuilding!

13:59 Thanks for that. I also belong to a high commitment religon. I am constantly taking time to make sure I find balance.

I would 100% say hes too far gone. Once he abandons his children for his goals he jumped a shark

Cypher1968

I'd say he's far gone. I never want to give up hope on people because I know any of us are capable of change, but there comes a point where you make a choice to pursue this path even if it hurts the people you care about. He didn't care who he hurt because he clearly sees his children as secondary, but I've seen people look back at the end of their path of destruction and they despair that they have burned all the bridges they had before. Also nice Conclave reference Jono! I'd love to see an episode on that movie!!

In the words of the wise Iroh: "He's crazy and he needs to go down." I haven't had the religious fanaticism in my family, but certainly family not heeding words until harder boundaries (low contact) were set. But this could only be done once the power dynamic was balanced, ie. not as kids or teens. I don't think Unalok could come back given his specialization into spirit knowledge/bending, which removes all others from his consideration because *he* is the expert.

LOK is flawed, don’t get me wrong, but it’s so underrated

Also, I don’t know if you guys take requests or recommendations, so feel free to ignore if you don’t. But it might be cool to use 12 Angry Men to discuss how to talk to people you disagree with

Duaani Grey

There is good stuff in LOK but I truly hate the series overall. The new series even shows that everything she accomplished was wrong.

More Lok of stuff please I LOVE THIS SHOW

I’m of the opinion in American arguments too many people are afraid to acknowledge they don’t actually want to shoot the message necessarily - they find the messenger obnoxious so they don’t want the take extra effort to perspective take. A lot of City vs outer rural areas have this struggle when they try to force a cure all solution across the board for any spiritualism, economics, or regional regulation. The biggest fights happen when we let ourselves get flooded with emotions and misattribute where the anger is coming from.

I haven’t had to deal with this (yet?), but I wonder if taking a pause, reflecting, and shining a light ontologically would work. Something like “it’s clear to me that this is really important to you, but I worry that you have veered so far into fanaticism that you have lost sight of your values, and I suspect that my own militancy may have caused you to dig deeper. And so for that, I am sorry. I have not always shown up in the best way to engage with you on this; maybe we were both talking past each other. Maybe we both are very passionate. But I think we both share more common ground than we are seeing right now. What if we took a step back from this activated state and looked at how aligned in our values we are, and are acting?”

Yay! Love that you guys are Korra fans — it’s such an underrated show. And the score is sooooo good!

Damn what an amazing episode. I can take the learnings into the real world and inform how I show up in the world. Thank you!!

Do you have any advice on what to do when you’ve gone past the point of mourning the relationship/who you thought the person was but have to maintain contact? I’ve unfortunately gotten to that point with the bulk of my family of origin after multiple years of therapy. And it would be so much easier to let the relationships die completely, but I have one sibling that I still love immensely, and it feels like I have to pretend nothing has changed to prevent them from also being cut out, which would devastate them.

I have had to make this choice when my daughtercame out. I had to break off with my brother and his wife because they were convinced that my daughter would contaminate their children and grandchildren. The fact that we also had a gay brother didn't seem to matter but my daughter was going straight to hell and we should break off loving and caring for her. Religious manipulation at it's best. I also broke from my church over this.

Nova Villmark

This is just reminding me of how good Legend of Korra was. Time for a cozy re-watch!

András Balogh

I think Unalaq was way too far gone by the beginning of the story. If he is willing to manipulate his own father to get his own brother banished from their country out of jealousy, what even is left? A real life example would be if two brothers love the same woman and one has a relationship with her, and the jealous brother has the mindset that 'I am better suited for her, because I am (insert good qualities)'. And then he creates an elaborate gaslighting campaign to say that his brother is a cheater, and convinces not just the woman but their entire family how horrible his brother is, so he gets disowned. At that point is there a relationship left to repair?

I practice skepticism (not denial masquerading as skepticism). I listened to a conspiracy theorist talk about being one of the top five 9/11 truthers invited to investigate all of the evidence for themselves. They had access to a lot of stuff the general public does not. The went to the sites, they got to talk to families of the victims. The more he saw, the more convinced he was that he was right. Then something happened. He realized that the family members were too good to be actors, these was genuine emotions of love and loss that they were expression. He realized that what he was doing was only adding to their pain. He stopped right then and tried to pass along what he had discovered and learned. As soon as he did, he became part of the conspiracy. It was the human connection that broke him out of his conspiracy thinking. The book The Unpersuadables investigates why intelligent people hold irrational beliefs. One of his "adventures" was a Holocaust denier's tour of Auschwitz. You cannot change someone's mind, only they can. There are some people that will never change their minds. As a skeptic, I never attempt to change anyone's mind, but I will refute false claims and link to verifiable evidence. That way is someone who hasn't settled on what to believe comes across that, they won't see bad information going unchallenged and decide that that is the real answer.
