Alan:

Hello Heroes! Merry Happy, and all the trimmings!

What I’m reading!

Words of Radiance - by Brandon Sanderson. Listen, I’ve been working on this for several months. My reading time has decreased significantly (so many kids things in Nov/Dec!) and also this book is a million pages. I read the first two Stormlight books as they came out, but then waited until the whole series was done. Now I’m going to finish them. It’s going to take me forever. I’m enjoying it but honestly? Too long. A bit bloated. Too many POV characters. Not nearly as bad as Wheel of Time at its bloatiest, but still. Could have used a significant edit, IMO.

What I’m watching!

Avatar: Fire & Ash is probably the least good Avatar (blue cat-people, not elemental magic people) film. Which means I still absolutely loved it. I love this world. I love these characters! (Yes, they have deepened into real characters, not just broad archetypes, which they kinda never were to begin with. Don’t get me started.) I want 10 more movies on/about Pandora. Get to work, Jim.

I’m gonna see Marty Supreme, Anaconda, and probably Zootopia 2 (again) this week. I love Christmas break!

What I’m playing!

The Drifter. This is a… masterpiece? It’s a classic point-and-click adventure (even on Mac!) but instead of being silly like Monkey Island, it’s dark and dour and has great twists, and the writing is great, and it’s just a solid good time. The puzzles are only occasionally frustrating, too!

Ace Combat 7. These games LOOK fantastic, but the gameplay always seemed silly to me. For context, my very first video games were hardcore simulation games back in the late '80s-early '90s. I grew up wanting to be a fighter pilot. I have played DCS (iykyk). And man, the stories are silly. And the dialogue is laughable. And the arcadey-ness is arcadey. But you know what? I’m “flying” a “fighter jet” through the air, making things go boom in a very 80’s action movie way. I’m sold.

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hello all, and happy holidays! This month I've been enjoying a lot of new films in theaters! Zootopia 2 (episode coming soon) and Rental Family were both wonderful. Wake Up Dead Man may be my favorite in the Knives Out trilogy. I'm excited for Hamnet, Eternity, and Avatar: Fire and Ash, which I plan to catch over the holiday. I also caught classics like Die Hard, The Shining, and Sense and Sensibility in theaters this month. At home I've been catching up watching Stranger Things (awesome) and reading Dickens' A Christmas Carol. I've been enjoying my time with family and loved ones. What have you all been up to? What have you been watching and reading?Love and light to you all!Jonathan

happy holidays !! have been watching heated rivalry, it's extremely healing for my younger self hehe. I love how much it's been embraced by straight male hockey fans, totally unexpected but so welcome

Man, I'd love to discuss Alan's perspective on Fire and Ash with him. I thought it was the first good _film_ in the series. I still think it could have been improved my removing a half hour, but it also could replace the second movie by bringing in the only 15 minutes of story that it didn't duplicate (better). I do completely agree that the world is absolutely perfect, and I also want to see so much more done with it. (I do have the game on my Wishlist to pick up soon.)

I recently started a Christmas tradition of listening to Tim Curry’s narration of A Christmas Carol. 10/10, highly recommend. I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on the Knives Out movies!

I saw Marty Supreme on Christmas Day. The table tennis scenes were great. My friend did not like it because it was not a happy, uplifting story and because the main character I'd despicable.

Mmm, I say this as someone who adores the Stormlight Archives, it may be best if you consider Words of Radiance your finishing point. Or maybe Oathbringer, the next one. The problems you are having with Words of Radiance will only be exacerbated as the series progresses, and I would love for you to love this series, but if Words of Radiance is feeling like a slog, you should respect your own time and find something else you could end up liking. Just my two cents, happy holidays and a serious thank you for the content you produce fellas :)

I loved Avatar: Fire and Ash, but I gotta say, I spent a decent amount of the movie yelling at Neytiri, "You do realize you're treating Spider like crap for the same reason you literally wanted to kill your husband for at first, right?"

I rewatched Die Hard, a few weeks ago. Like I said, best action movie ever! I haven't been reading that much, lately. But there's plenty of time, this coming up year. Can't wait for you guys to cover Zootopia 2! I'm going to buy it on DVD. I love my physical media! I'm rewatching The Shield for the 3rd time. Some episodes really got to me. After this, I'm planning on watching Mad Men for the first time. I can't believe, I never got around to watching it.

I've been loving the new season of Stranger Things as well as learning about some fan theories and making up theories of my own. (Lady Applejack with her kukri, the hidden key to defeating Vecna?)

Kimberly H

I also got to see the anniversary re-release of Sense and Sensibility-- so much fun to see such a beautiful film on the big screen! Even though I've watched this movie several times over the years, I still caught new things on this rewatch. Colonel Brandon, bestill my heart!

Christine

“Merry Happy and all the trimmings” is now going in my vernacular. Thank you.

Okay, you have no idea how excited I got upon learning Alan has played The Drifter. Such a well written and engaging game where I too, only sometimes got annoyed at the puzzles lol

Alan! good luck on your Stormlight Archive quest! I think you'll be both interested to know that in the last two books mental health becomes a relevant thing (I think that's no spoilers, but incentive :D) Thanks to K Pop Demon Hunter and my previous past as an manga romance/shoujo reader I wnet down the KDrama vortex in Netflix. "Dynamite Kiss" was super fun, with all the troupes of K-Rom-Dramas (cinderella, work relationshiop, love triangle/squares, some kind-of-justified lies and their following confusion, the umbrella, etc) The male lead was great understanding the asssignment on all of the tropes, jajajajaja. The female lead as also great, you start thinking she's a bit of a loser, but you see her principles, kindness and courage right away and then she shines in all aspects. A lot of accountability, positive relationships, super wholesome and the pacing is a bit slower than eastern series, but no episode is boring!

Happy everything! My husband and I have been spending the holidays on a Caribbean cruise, so we have been watching our holiday movies on television. We watched some at home before we left: Die Hard (yes, it is a holiday classic), Love Actually, Charlie Brown Christmas. Once on board, we moved on to Christmas with the Kranks, Elf, A Christmas Story, Christmas in Connecticut, Scrooged, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I mean, we need some classics around here. We need to cry a little bit, and laugh a lot. That's what holiday movies are all about. Hope all of you are having a wonderful holiday season, filled with joy, love, laughter, and movies!

Finished watching Stranger Things. Been reading Dungeon Crawler Carl and also trying to get through 1984. I've been very slowly playing through Expedition 33. Mostly because my tender heart can't handle too much of that story at once.

Castelianos!

Can’t wait for a Zootopia2 episode !

I'm a big fan of Brandon Sanderson since he finished The Wheel of Time series. His Stormlight Archives is incredible. I feel like it's one of the more original fantasy settings. I often get the impression of the world being like under the sea only on land. The books are big, but I like the change from the standard 300+/-20-page trilogies. They feel more like a TV series that has the room to breath, explore more of the character's backstories, and the history of the world rather than a movie that has to chop things to meet a time limit. It's a big world with a lot of moving parts, which is also why I enjoyed Wheel of Time. Could they be chopped down? Sure, but then they begin to fall victim to formulas. Not everything has to fall into the 3-part heroes journey.
