Alan:

Hello Heroes!

The warmest January in Utah’s history. Of course it’s the year I finally bought a snowboard.

What I’m reading!

I literally didn’t finish a book this month. I’m still working on Stormlight Archive #2. Man, it’s kind of a slog. Like, I appreciate all of you out there who are huge fans of it, but yeesh. It’s rough. Started a couple other books I’ll report on next month.

Before & Afters #45 - Sinners - It’s not a book, but this issue was over 100 pages and is chock-full of great stuff from the production and post of Sinners. I learned a lot! Before & Afters is a magazine about VFX, btw. It’s great. If there’s any you find interesting, there are digital and print copies available at the website: https://beforesandafters.com/magazine/. Highly recommend for the big movie nerd in your life.

What I’m watching!

Avatar: Fire & Ash - I love the Avatar movies. They f-ing RIP! I make no apologies for it.

BBC Pride & Prejudice miniseries! My 10-yr-old daughter had never seen it. My teenage boys watched too. We all loved it, of course, but man, my inner director was SCREAMING the whole time about lighting, framing, staging, and blocking. What a stiff, boringly shot show. 100% saved by the script and performances.

I have a huge list of movies to watch that I’m actually excited to watch before the Oscars this year. Even though I think Sinners should probably win all 16 categories it got nominated for. Normally I’m pretty blah on Oscar-bait movies. But there are a bunch of noms this year that look really interesting!

What I’m playing!

Ace Combat 7. I grew up wanting to be a fighter pilot. My very first video games were flight sims (F-19 Stealth Fighter, then Falcon 3.0, for all you ancient nerds out there). This game has great graphics, an absolutely nonsense story, sorta middling arcadey gameplay, and I’m still digging it.

Portal 2. This is my third or fourth play-through. What a great game. Man I wish Valve still made games. They were really good at it. Though I’m glad they made me a Steam Deck.

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hey all! January has just FLOWN by. I've been enjoying The Flash (the CW show) from the beginning with my son. Super fun! I never had time to get into it when it was on, so I'm enjoying the binge-watch. Grant Gustin is perfect. My local theater is doing a Hunger Games marathon this month, so I've been catching that instead of new releases which, in January, historically aren't that great. Katniss on the big screen is pretty fantastic!Honestly, I've fallen behind on reading this month, but I aim to read Stephen King's Dr. Sleep since I enjoyed The Shining back in October. What have you all been watching and reading?

For reading ive been listening to the audiobook of the Host by Stephanie Meyer. Guilty pleasure fir me but I enjoy it with my brain turned on and acknowledging the problems so should be fine For watching ive been drowning out the chaos with Godzilla films. Started with the 1954 classic and have been moving through them. Its fascinating seeing film making advance from black and white to full color and to see how film making advanced in other ways.

Just finished Ghost of Yōtei recently. Great follow-up to Tsushima imo, and I loved the revenge story tied to the game. Open world was easy to explore and get lost in too lol!

How fun! I've been reading a lot this month (10 books), mostly alternating between 2 general categories: 18th century novels written by women, and non-fiction about female intelligence agents (spies) and cryptologists (code breakers and code makers) during World War 2. Consequently, I've been catching up on the WW2 movies that have been on my "to watch" list--most notably "Dunkirk" and "Darkest Hour." BTW I agree with you about the P&P miniseries; I don't care for it as an adaptation, and don't have the sentimental attachment to it that many have (as I did not grow up watching it). I love the novel, but this feels more like reading the book aloud than an adaptation (though I also agree that Colin Firth is ALWAYS solid).

Alan, as someone else with ADHD who loves Stormlight, the audio books might be a better choice for you. I have a feeling you'll really appreciate some later arcs and moments. Though I will admit they can be a bit of a slog at times... but then also at points I was bouncing up and down in my car chanting YES YES YES half way through Words of Radiance. Also I feel you, I'm so upset about the lack of snow this year in Utah! If I'm going to have seasonal depression, I better at least get snow!!! And also Portal 2 is goated! I just finished Sunrise on the Reaping, the Hunger Games prequel. And wow it HURT. It makes the OG trilogy better and worse. Better in that it gives more depth. Worse in the way the Clone Wars TV show makes Order 66 worse. As in it hurts far more. Excellent read, I highly recommend it to fans of the Hunger Games who haven't read it yet!

QueenMelsRevenge

I've gone to see Avatar and watched the Dune movies which I've thoroughly enjoyed. And I'm on Stormlight 1! Though struggling with it because reading's become hard due to stress. Have fun and good luck you both!

Was the this 1980s Pride and Prejudice or the 1990s version. There are problems in 1990s BBC programmes because of the closure/reduction of in house productions in the early 90s so haven't got the full learnings of the BBC so lost some corporate memory. I would say give I, Claudius a go. I think it's a brilliant produced series. I've watched the whole of Hazbin Hotel, a fantastic series, as well as watching for me the much anticipated adaption of I Wish You All the Best, would recommend, a brilliant adaptation, well acted and a good directorial debut.

What I am watching this month the biggest standout for me was His and Hers on Netflix. Great murder mystery mini series highly recommend. Don't watch around the kiddos though. Reading I am currently reading Mona's Eyes by Thomas Schlesser. An art historian and author it is a sweet story about a grandpa in Paris taking his granddaughter every day after school to examine one art piece at the louve and talking about it. The descriptions for the paintings are amazing! I am also reading Supernatural by Alex Pare its an art book that talks about artwork based on supernatural things, fairytale, occult, biblical etc. Very fascinating book. Havent finished either yet but loving both.

Also playing Red Dead Redmeption only ever played 2. 1 is really good and I get why people love it. 2 is still top tier for me. Just finished replaying 2 and already want to again because I adore Arthur Morgan and his story. One of the best western stories ever in my opinion

Rebekah

I'm currently reading The Xerus Galaxy Saga by E. A. Hendryx (not my normal genre at all, but there's enough political intrigue to keep me happy, lol), and rereading several of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn books (again, for the political intrigue). My mom and I are also bingeing The Bad Batch, and we recently saw Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning.

I was happy to see Wunmi Mosaku and especially Delroy Lindo get their Oscar recognition. It is hard to believe that this is MBJ’s first nomination. He should have gotten nominations for both Fruitvale Station and BIack Panther. I don’t have high hopes for Sinners getting the wins it deserves on the night, but maybe the academy will surprise me. P&P is one of my comfort reads, so it’s in heavy rotation at the moment. I don’t think any adaptation has gotten it right and the script for the 1990s version is very weak. (They flipped the Jane/Bingley and Wickham reveals in the letter! Whyyyyyyyy?). Without Firth’s star making turn the series would have faded into deserved obscurity before the turn of the millennium. After you read Dr. Sleep, give the movie with Ewan McGregor a try. The cast is excellent.

Moon7Willow

I've started a rewatch of one of my favorite K-Dramas called Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (available on Rakuten Viki!) and feeling all the feels! I recently acquired Sunrise on the Reaping and plan on reading before the film premieres! Maybe I'll get my hands on Marvel's War of the Realms omnibus before the year ends!

Juni Rechter

Alan, now that you've watched Avatar Fire and Ash, you'll have to play the Frontiers of Pandora DLC: From the Ashes!

Jay Skylar's Stories

Please please please do a CinemaTherapy episode on The Flash! I know it's long, but at least for one of the seasons--I love that show so much and it's so ripe for therapeutic exploration. Also--Portal 2 is a hilarious and amazing game, one of my favorite childhood memories is watching my brother and my dad play it (and making loving but snarky comments every time they failed or died)

TJ Hedges

I also LOVE the AVATAR films, having watched the first one 12 times in theaters alone. xD Needless to say Pandora has my heart. I didn't get to see AFAA as much as I wanted to in theaters due to being sick back to back, but I still loved the film and cried so much during it.

Mary Flynn

I'm doing an American history reading project and read Black Flags, Blue Waters about pirates in colonial America

bryt.knee

Thank you for the magazine recommendation, Alan! I ordered my Sinners issue and can't wait to read it 😌

Kory Misun

I would love to know Jono and Alan's thoughts on Pride and Prejudice & Zombies. I avoided it because I thought the title was stupid, but I think I've watched it over twenty times now.

O-Dog

Hey! New to the chat. One film that would be perfect to feature on this channel is Tombstone (1993). In my opinion, it's one of the greatest western films ever made, with an Oscar worthy performance by Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. It could be "Therapist Reacts to Tombstone", or "Psychology of a Hero: Wyatt Earp", or "Psychology of a Hero: Doc Holliday".

Completely unrelated to literally everything in this post (just the more recent) but would you guys be interested in doing an episode on Wonder Man?? The show just dropped I see Alan having many things to talk about in the show and it's show itself is pretty good. (It's like like Loki good but good) And it got basically no ads (I have no idea when it dropped just saw it on Disney Plus yesterday). Idk what jono can talk about?? Shutting people out ?? Dude is fairly shy and reserved and over thinks things. I'm sure there's something there

Becky Leonardis

You mentioned how much you love Avatar on Cinema Therapy, Alan. Did you guys cover it? I haven't seen Fire & Ash, yet. It's on my list. I did go to the movies to see the first one at the time. I watched Memory of a Killer, the other night. I mostly watched it because Michael Imperioli's on it. I had a love/hate relationship with his character, Christopher on The Sopranos! LOL! The greatest show ever! I quote some of his lines just about everyday. LOL! I rewatched Gone Girl, Promising Young Woman and the bonus features of Brave. The Disney animators took a trip to Scotland. One of them said, it's the most beautiful country in the world. Next to Italy, of course. (My opinion) It's been warm in CA. I wish, it could be summer all year round. Go back to the beach. BTW! I'm going to watch Mad Men for the first time, pretty soon.

Hmm, I think fans generally think the BBC mini series of P&P is more book accurate, but that the movie feels like the book. I tend to agree, although I love them both. I think people often forget that a book has to be adapted to the new media, and that being entirely truthful to the book is not always the best idea. I am glad we have both versions though, they each fulfill different purposes for me 😉 don’t know if I need the Netflix series coming up.. I’m in a bit of a reading slump after Fredrik Backman’s ”My Friends”. It was fantastic, but I’m a bit emotionally drained and not ready to start a new book yet 😅 I’ve been watching ”Interview with a vampire” and it’s so good! I can’t believe people aren’t talking about it. Currently watching the Pitt weekly. I kind of love being forced not to binge honestly. I am also jumping on the Heated Rivalry train.

I finally started the manga for my all time favorite anime (Ouran Highschool Host Club)! I'm currently reading "Queer Devotion" and "The God of Endings". I watched 9 movies in January, but the standouts were: The Prince of Egypt Wolfwalkers No Other Choice
