Alan:

Hello Heroes!

What did I even do this month? Is it March? Are we even real? Spending free time writing, and shuttling kids around to various activities, so not as much to report this month.

What I’m reading!

David Lean by Kevin Brownlow. This is a biography fit for the man who directed Lawrence of Arabia. It’s huge. Detailed. Maybe a bit too long. But you know what else it is? Gripping. I’ve got a whole list of David Lean films to watch and rewatch now. What an incredible filmmaker, and what an interesting, flawed, incredible man and filmmaker.

Before & Afters #33 - Andor S2. More B&A. I love this magazine. This issue covers all the practical stuff they shot, that was then digitally enhanced and stretched. One of the reasons it all feels so real and physical. If there’s any you find interesting, there are digital and print copies available at the website: https://beforesandafters.com/magazine/ or on Amazon.

What I’m watching!

Project Hail Mary. I love this book! And you know what: the movie is also very good. I have a weird nitpick about it that really affected my enjoyment of the movie, but I think I’m alone on weirdo island with that one. Gosling is perfect. Rocky is even more perfect. And the cast back on earth is great.

Buster Keaton’s Two-Reelers. I found a Blu-ray collection of all of Buster’s short films (that still exist). I mean, feels silly to say it, but what a genius. Dude literally invented 30-50% of cinematic grammar for comedy and genre stuff. Still gets used all the time. Still (still!) nobody has done it better. I’m really excited to dig into his features. I’ve only ever seen The General and part of Spite Marriage.

What I’m playing! Still!

Nuclear Option. This is a flight sim (pretty arcade-y) that allows you to drop nukes! Fun! It’s actually really fun and kinda deep, but I don’t really have the rig for it. Still enjoying it though.

Half-Life 2. This is my third or fourth playthrough. What a great game. Man I wish Valve still made games. They were really good at it. Though I’m glad they made me a Steam Deck. This is basically just a copy-paste of my reminiscence about Portal 2.

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hello everyone! How is your March going? What have you been up to? What have you been enjoying?Me, I've really enjoyed both HOPPERS and PROJECT HAIL MARY in theaters. All the people who say "I don't go to the movies because there's nothing good" people no longer have an excuse. If they ever did, in my experience there's almost always at least one good pick at the multiplex. But these were both first-rate!I've been getting back into BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, which to me is somehow both super beloved and not loved enough by the general public. I think it belongs right there with the best TV comedies of all time. Phenomenal cast, belly laughs every episode. Andre Braugher (rest in peace) as Captain Holt is a revelation. Now that I've seen the movie, I'm going to read the book version of PROJECT HAIL MARY. Excited to get further into that world! What have you all been enjoying?

What I am watching: Bridgerton Season 4. It was good over all but I am also sick of the typical rake gets fixed by great girl tropes. I am currently/just started Daredevil Born Again Season 2. Already this season is much better than the first. It definitely has a message that it is telling and I am here for it! Granted we are only one episode in I am excited. I am planning on rewatching Like Water For Chocolate season 1 on HBO because I dont remember it with season 2 airing right now. Also watching Shrinking season 3 can I just say that I adore this show! Harrison Ford is basically playing himself in a lot of ways and I love it. Reading: I didnt do a lot of reading this month. Tried to read Phantom Of The Opera, and did not care for the book. Gave up on it about more than halfway through. Andrew Loyd Webber was correct on it being "bloody awful." I think the play really took the interesting elements of the story and honestly made it better. I am about to start Enemy of My Enemy by Alex Segura its a daredevil novel. Comic book Character novels can be either really good or really bad. I have come across both from Dc and Marvel. Im excited to see how it is and hoping its good. Speaking of comic books thanks to a promo with Marvel Unlimited I am going to continue expanding my comic book reading. Planning on more Daredevil, Spiderman, and other street heroes/team ups. I have a list of books I am planning on reading as well. I plan on reading The Odysessy translated by Emily Wilson which is the version Christopher Nolan was inspired by for his adaptation of the film that is coming out in July. Gaming I deleted and restarted my island on animal crossing new horizons because of the update. Other than that not a lot of gaming Im waiting for some new releases that I am excited about to play. Hope everyone had a great March. Looking forward to April I have some exciting things going on then and things to watch!

Films & shows I'm enjoying: Star Wars Rebels (rewatching this with my mom who's never seen it, quite a lot of fun) and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (I don't watch many R-rated films because I very much dislike gore, smut, and language; but this one was very well written and had very little content I was uncomfortable with). Games I'm enjoying: I'm well into my first playthrough of Jedi: Fallen Order, and quite enjoying it. After spending my childhood playing low-budget mobile games with extremely clunky graphics, the graphics in this game look absolutely amazing. XDD I also found a few mobile puzzle games that are (oddly enough) improving my focus in other areas. Books I'm enjoying: I'm currently reading Timothy Zahn's Hand of Thrawn duology for the first time; y'all, the way he writes political intrigue floors me just about every time. This month I also found the first novel to bring me anywhere close to tears... Fates Defiant, by Brigitte Cromey and C. M. Banschbach, which is a NA Greco-Roman fantasy novel about two gladiators. I finished it in a day and a half, and then spend the next week or two blubbering about it to anyone who'd listen. (If you like Hunger Games, you'll love it. And even if you DON'T like Hunger Games, like me, you'll probably still love it. Freaking amazing book. It's honestly the most heartrendingly beautiful depiction of human trafficking and the resulting trauma that I've ever seen, anywhere.)

Oh man i was actually hankering for b99 myself!! The founf family dynamic in that show is astronomically hilarious XD

BlackAdder

I really hope that there will be some episode about Brooklyn 99. There is quite a lot interesting themes, ideas and storylines. Holt Kevin relationship would be really cool :-D

I finally got to see all the Best Picture noms this year in theaters, feels good man; and I’ve seen GOAT and No Other Choice, which were both great. Slowly making my way through The Office, hoping to actually finish this time since got around halfway last time. Been playing Marathon pretty much any time I can find it, and I can’t stop thinking about it afterwards. It’s been so addicting and I can’t wait to carve more timeout for it.

SaucyJTB

First: Brooklyn 99 is a perfect show. Second: I'm dying to know what the nitpick for Project Hail Mary is 😂.

Jake Schnackenberg

You guys should check out “The Pitt” if you haven’t already done so. The show is amazing and shows what it’s really like to work in emergency medicine. And one of the main characters struggles realistically from PTSD he developed from working during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Katharine Kroeber-Wiley

OMG, you're only just discovering Buster Keaton?? prepare for an absolute joy-ride, although The General really is his best movie. He is a wonder.

Sara Wagiström

I’ve mostly been reading this month, but I did make time to see Project Hail Mary in theatres and I’m so happy about it! I’m convinced Ryan Gosling can do anything. And I think it balances ”a grand space adventure” so well with also being a story about friendship and really nerdy things. I loved the soundtrack too! Will you be reading the book or the audiobook, Jono? I’m not great at audiobooks myself but I’ve heard this is a great one. I finished reading Wuthering Heights and I actually kind of loved it. A dark book full of horrible people, but it reeled me in. Might go see the new movie now. Agree on Brooklyn 99 - it’s my comfort show 😉 I always come back to it

CinemaTherapy

Jono here. I asked him. He said [SPOILER] when Rocky catches fire to save Grace, it's much clearer in the book what's happening to him.

SaucyJTB

Huh, interesting! I thought I had a good grasp of what was happening, but I'll have to read the book to truly know. Thank you!
