Alan:

Hello Heroes!

Spring is in full swing, which means I’m constantly worried that I’m not doing enough gardening to keep my green-thumbed wife in love with me. Which is silly. Because I’m gorgeous.

What I’m reading!

The Faith of Beasts by James S.A. Corey: The second book in their series about humanity getting captured by a giant, voracious alien empire and their attempts to survive captivity. Or possibly even destroy their captors! It’s a very fun world from the same writers (two dudes sharing one pen name) who created The Expanse, which is one of my favorite sci-fi universes ever.

Livesuit by James S.A. Corey: A little novella giving background about something that (I assume) is going to play a much larger role in the third novel in this series. Not strictly necessary, but it was a fun, quick read regardless.

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers: Guess this is just sci-fi month. Though this I would classify as "cozy sci-fi" since it kinda feels like a mystery novel set in the English countryside with drizzle and ivy-covered houses that have a lot of nooks. Hard to explain, but somehow this feels like the cyberpunk/spacefaring version of that.

What I’m watching!

The Lady Eve (1941) - It will shock you to learn that this certified classic of the rom-com/screwball genre is… really really great! Highly recommended. Preston Sturges at the height of his powers, an incredible cast, headlined by Barbara Stanwyck being an absolute murderer. I loved this movie. So much I immediately bought the Criterion Blu-Ray (physical media ftw babeeee).

Sheep Detectives - DELIGHTFUL! COZY! FUNNY! Amazing what a good script, a stellar cast, and a director who cares can do with a movie. I mean literally, it's amazing. I'm amazed every time I see a movie this good. Also, cozy is turning into a theme here.

Man on the Inside (S1) - I hadn't been sleeping on this show. I mean, c'mon, it's a Michael Schur show starring Ted Danson, of course it was going to be great. But I had no idea how great it would be. The answer is: a lot. A lot of great. You should watch this show. Then call your grandpa and see how he's doing. Then watch season 2.

What I’m playing! Still!

Dispatch - This is basically an interactive TV show? A bit hard to describe, unless you’ve played it. But I actually really enjoyed it. I’m going to play through again and try a bunch of different choices. Fun game, but VERY R-rated.

Dave the Diver - What a weird game. It’s a delightful little scuba-diving mystery game, but also you help run a sushi restaurant? Like, this sounds like something I should kinda hate, but I’m really enjoying it! Very cozy, and nicely sun-drenched and tropical feeling. Maybe I need to just move to Margaritaville?

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hello all! How has May been going for you? I've been enjoying heading to the theaters all month!

Devil Wears Prada 2 I enjoyed even more than the first one. I felt it allowed the characters to grow in natural ways that were true to where you'd expect them to be 20 years later. It had less bite than the original, but more warmth. A bit less devilish perhaps, but the healing journeys were appreciated.

The Sheep Detectives was delightful! Fantastic cast, many laugh-out-loud moments, and a "Babe-meets-Agatha Christie" vibe. Perfect gateway murder-mystery for families, but honestly super enjoyable for any moviegoer.

Mandalorian and Grogu is a lesser Star Wars film in many ways. It lacks the epic scope, high stakes, and emotional resonance of the series' better entries. BUT (and this is very important): it's super fun. Light and breezy adventure with fantastic creature effects is a great matinee to start the summer.

At home I've been reading Joshua Coleman's When Parents Hurt: Compassionate Strategies When You and Your Grown Child Don't Get Along. It's a guide for parents who are estranged from their grown children and want to build bridges. I'm excited, as this is a bit of a blind spot for me research-wise. Looking forward to filling the gap!

What about you all? What have you been enjoying this month?

I watched Obsession earlier this month and it was absolutely incredible. One of the most deeply upsetting movies I've ever seen, and I say that in a complimentary way. Excellent commentary on nice guys and men who feel like they're owed affection by the women in their lives. Probably too intense to cover on the channel but nice guy syndrome was already pretty thoroughly explored in the Megamind episode. From a filmmaking standpoint, there's incredible use of blocking and shadows throughout it, masking a character's facial expressions so you're left wondering what their intentions are. It's filled with dread throughout the entire thing and doesn't rely on cheap tricks to scare you. Inde Navarette gives one of the greatest horror performances ever as well that I really hope garners Oscar attention. It's a must see for fans of horror.

I also went to see devil wears Prada 2 in theatres and we enjoyed it so much! Just started reading ”Katabasis” by RF Kuang and while not as theoretically thick as her other works (looking at you Babel) I really like it. It’s about a scholar who ventures to hell to bring back her professor from the dead, and takes a lot of inspiration from other such work (Divine Comedy, tragedy of Orpheus etc). I think I’m in the right place to enjoy it as I have been through a rough patch and I believe that is the metaphor here. Also read ”Yellowface” by the same author, very interesting read. Recommend that one too.

I finished a book series I lost track of in middle school, The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann, its art based magic system is awesome and I love the characters and world building, it’s such a fun read. I’ve been playing Minecraft like crazy but that’s what I always play and I’ve been watching a show called The Burroughs on Netflix that show goes SO HARD it’s insane. The writing, the payoffs, the twists, the characters always doing shit that makes sense and isn’t stupid decisions made just for plot progression?! Awesomeness. I want to say the story is well stitched together but that would imply I could find the seams in it and I can’t it’s written so naturally, like, yeah, that character would do that in this situation, that makes perfect sense!

I read The Sheep Detective years ago, and I was talking about it to my mom. When I saw the trailer and saw who was in it, I knew I had to watch it. The book was so good.

I saw Sheep Detectives as well, it was delightful when I could hear what was going on. Went to it at a drive in theater with some friends and between our car battery dying at the mid point and someone’s truck being louder than necessary it soured my time a little. Been playing so much Marathon, 45 hrs isn’t much compared to others but it’s a lot for what my schedule has allowed. (Free trial on June 2 for the curious.) There hasn’t been much reading for me, though I started Magician’s Nephew recently because I’ve only heard the audiobooks for most of the Narnia series as a kid. It’s proper reading time now, very excited

Should add the "Dungeon Crawler Carl" book series. I just heard of them and have been DEVOURING the audiobooks

Ha! I'm also reading through The Expanse right now! Been playing 007: First Light, also. STRONGLY recommend!

Man on the inside is incredible) I’m anxiously awaiting the third season. While you’re on Netflix you guys should make sure you watch Remarkably Bright Creatures. It’s a great movie.

Another vote for Dungeon Crawler Carl. The audiobook version is sublime! Jeff Hays (the narrator) is out of this world with what hems able to do with his voice. The story and world building is excellent. Recommend the entire series.

May was great! Busy, but great! I went to a local music festival. I also teach French, so I've been busy with lessons and grading. This summer, I plan to see lots of great events and read lots of great books by participating in the Seattle Public Library Book Bingo! Hopefully I'll fill out the entire card this year! I also created "The Wishbone Challenge." Whether or not any of you watched the show Wishbone on PBS growing up in the 90s, how many of the books featured on the show do you have on your shelf? I'm VERY excited for the documentary "What's The Story, Wishbone?" On Instagram, I also plan to read and/or reread these classics for the rest of the year and make posts where I’ll talk about the books featured on Wishbone, my thoughts on them, and how the episodes adapted the stories for children. I just love sharing books and encouraging others to read, just like that dog (RIP, Soccer). And speaking of books, I would love to start a Cinema Therapy Book Club. Not sure how to make that happen, but I would love to talk books with my fellow Cinema Therapy fans. :)
