Alan:

Hello Heroes!

Whoa kids. It’s been a whole time. Like, we have gone through all of time this month. SO MUCH HAPPENED, but the biggest thing was a HUGE crowdfunding campaign for The Vessel! Thank you all so much!

What I’m reading!

The Big Goodbye by Sam Wasson. An in-depth telling of the making of Chinatown, the classic Neo-noir film. Including tons of biographical detail of the major players, and the ongoing fallout from the film, and everyone involved with it. Fascinating book about a fascinating film.

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. A hilarious, scathing takedown of trad-wife influencers, the culture that breeds them, and everyone (on all sides) who are fascinated by them. Basically, nobody comes out of this book cleanly. If you read this book and feel self-righteous at the end, you missed the point, and missed an opportunity to laugh at yourself. I loved this book!

What I’m watching!

Mean Streets: I’m gonna be honest. I don’t get it. I have a lot of movie holes, and I’m trying to fill them. Possibly my biggest is Martin Scorcese. I’ve only seen a handful of his films. I’m going to be watching through a lot of them over the coming months. I didn’t love this movie. Or even really like it. Like, I was bored, but not so bored I fell asleep, the entire time until the last 5 minutes. I don’t get it. I do see the influence it had. But I don’t get it.

Masters of the Universe: Huh. I mean, it was definitely a movie. But did it, you know, move me? No. No it did not.

Resident Evil: This was right up my alley. I had more fun at this movie than I’ve had at the movies in a long long time. What a (gory, stupid, crass, blood-soaked) ride!

Coyote vs. Acme: Cannot recommend this film highly enough. Funny, silly, surprisingly thoughtful. It’s exactly what you want from a Looney Tunes/live-action blending movie about suing a giant corporation to get justice as a little guy (or little coyote). Also, please see it in theaters to stick it to Warner Bros (and their villain CEO) for trying to bury it.

Ted Lasso S4: Honestly, just as shaggy as S3. So not peak Ted. But you know what? Not-peak-Ted is still Ted. I love that man. More please.

What I’m playing!

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Resync: One of my favorite games of all time remade with ray-tracing and super-improved graphics? Sign me up! I’ll be playing this a lot for… Awhile.

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hello everyone! I'm so excited to be entering spooky season and fill my month with scary delights.

To kick off the season, I started reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark to our kids at night. This is a hardback compilation of all three books that I loved so much as a child. My family is LOVING it. The stories are great and the illustrations are so creepy!

In theaters this month I saw Dreamworks' new film Forgotten Island (or rather, we did as a Patreon meetup in Salt Lake City). SO much fun. Much better than I expected, with a lot of heart and truly bizarre dark humor. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

I also caught Coyote vs. Acme, which may have been slightly over-hyped in my opinion, but it was still very funny and very smart and surprisingly moving when it wanted to be. By a wide mile the best Looney Tunes movie. Yes, that includes Space Jam.

I took my wife to a double-feature of Alien and The Thing, which was maybe the best double-feature I've ever been to!

What about you all? What have you been reading or watching?

I also loved Coyote vs ACME, I watched it twice in cinemas (once as part of a triple bill with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and The Odyssey) and loved it, hilariously funny but don’t drink water at the wrong time as the first time I saw it, I choked for 5 minutes laughing at gag with the mother hen in the jury. I also saw Endgame Encore in preparation for Doomsday. It was fun watching it again in a cinema filled with diehard fans all whooping at iconic moments. I just finished reading Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Sutanto which is not my usual read as I’m more into epic gory fantasy than rom-coms but i laughed out loud multiple times and couldn’t put it down. Now I’m reading The Hunger of the gods, part 2 of John Gwynne’s magical Viking trilogy- highly recommend to anyone who’s not afraid of 600 page epics with game of thrones levels of violence.

This month Ive mainly been working havent had much time to read but I did watch some movies and shows. I rewatched the final destination movies in the spirit of spooky season, I started schitts creek which is a very heartfelt comedy. This month I read Our Strange Duet a Phantom Of The Opera telling (based on the musical) from Christine's point of view. It was everything I was wanting from this book it was amazing! It fixed issues I had with the play and the movie. (She is in her early 20s when she meets the phantom and he doesnt teach her until shes an adult. So grooming storyline is gone thank godness) it also built up the Raoul and Christine romance while still giving you the allure of The Phantom. You really get to be inside Christine's head and see whats she thinking or feeling. It also helps fill in the in-between song moments from the play which is fantastic. Highlu recommend. I have been playing Blood Of The Dawnwalker. It is my game of the year for sure. It is fantastic. If you like the witcher 3 this game is right up your alley. It is everything I wanted it to be. It wasnt without its issues but I honestly loved it. As a vampire monster fan it was amazing. It changed aome of the lore but honored a lot of the others and honestly its fantastic. The developers, concept artists, etc really did their research while still being creative. Looking forward to continue to take care of my health, and find time in between that and work to enjoy my month. Hope everyone had a fantastic September and a good time at fan x! Hope to see you all next year! Wishing everyone a spooky fantastic October!

I bought Taylor Tomlinson's book ("Actually, Nevermind") on Sunday and had completely consumed it by Monday night. I adore her as a comic, and the book was compelling and really relatable. Highly recommend.

I'm currently reading What My Bones Know. I'd be curious if Jono/Alan/other patrons have read it and their thoughts. I identify a lot with the author and her experiences, though hers were a lot violent than mine. It's been an eye-opening hard but worth the journey which very much feels like an understatement of the century for me. I'm only at part 2 Been bingeing a lot of cinema therapy as a new and happy viewer and also watching the new series of Taskmaster. Oh and I just finished playing Big Walk HIGHLY RECOMMEND its sooo good, new top 5 game for me. I bought and played it knowing nothing in advance and im so glad I did. If you're reading this stop and go get Big Walk and thank me later
