Hey all! Jono here with reviews of a few movies I've seen in theaters recently: Godzilla Minus Zero, Sense and Sensibility, and Wildwood!

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO. The first film, Godzilla Minus One, was a legit masterpiece and one of the greatest surprises of my moviegoing life. It's impossible to recapture that pleasant shock. The best director Takashi Yamazaki can do is craft a worthy follow up, and that he does!

Slightly more spectacle-driven and slightly less character-driven than the original, but still better at both than most movies. For me it was the slightest step down from the first, but that's an impossible standard. I still loved this, still had an amazing time, still think it's first-rate blockbuster filmmaking with genuine heart and soul. I love these characters.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY. I'll be blunt. It's very good, but the 1995 version is transcendant. So what happens? Amazing source material, solid casting (Daisy Edgar-Jones shines as Elinor Dashwood), and good direction by Georgia Oakley contribute to an enjoyable adaptation that can't help but pale in comparison to Ang Lee's iconic version.

My biggest complaint? Not enough color. It's SO drab, visually I felt like I was watching Twilight. Watch it if you love this story and can't get enough. But if you are just picking one, it's the '95 version all the way.

WILDWOOD. The year's best film, full-stop. LAIKA delivers an undeniable feat of both animation and filmmaking with a visually staggering, well-told, emotional story that goes to some dark places before lifting your spirits in phenomenal fashion.

I could go on and on, but to me every facet of this movie is perfect and not to be missed in theaters. Voice-acting, scripting, production design, musical score, character design, and storytelling are all mind-blowing. Make this a priority.

What have you all been watching in theaters? I would love to read your mini-reviews!

Just saw Wildwood last night - a fantastic movie!

Hi Jono! I saw Clayface yesterday: it's compelling and very well made, it feels a bit like watching The Fly (similar character beats and shocking body horror! 😲) - you'd never know it was a DC movie if the logo wasn't on it or Gotham City wasn't mentioned!

I saw Wildwood this past weekend and have been recommending it to everyone! So glad I made the effort to see it in theaters 🥰

I'm still waiting for the Sea Monsters to show up to top the 1995 version.

You should profile Maid in Manhattan!

Omen the Black Cat

Agree completely about wildwood! It was shockingly dark and violent, but meaningfully so. Big CS Lewis vibes. I also agree about Sense and Sensibility. Just watching the trailer I decided it looked too drab and didn’t see it.
