How do you open up to community and connection after trauma?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are joined by world-renowned novelist, Brandon Mull, as they dive into the hero’s journey of Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy. Rocket's journey is centered around connection and healing after trauma, and Jonathan speaks to the validity of Rocket's experiences and reactions. They talk about how Guardians 3 changed their perception of the first two movies and the brilliance of James Gunn's writing, especially with Rocket.

“He didn’t chase them away. Even though he yelled at them and was always mean. And he stole batteries he didn’t need.” When we don’t think love will be granted, we don’t ask for it. I love that that’s as close to asking for affirmation as Rocket can come to in that moment. It always felt so natural

Hello there

Oh no, I'm not ready für this yet. I need to watch the movie first, cry, come back here and cry more.

Holly✌️

Alan, how did you not cry!? I was UGLY crying by the end of this

Holly✌️

Also, I never put the prosthetic thievery and the friends he lost together, but that broke me. Thanks for pointing that out.

Honestly GotG3 was the first Superhero movie I've really enjoyed in a VERY long time. Similar to how I felt when Logan came out. They told an amazing, heartbreaking, moving story that happen to be about superheroes.

I wonder if Brandon Sanderson would be interested in doing an episode with Alan and Jonathan.

Can't wait to watch this episode! I know you guys rarely do TV shows...but I would LOVE to hear you do Psychology of a Hero about Jon Snow (Game of Thrones) I know it's a long shot, but just putting it out there!💜

Ali

I watched the 3rd one last night and holy shirt I balled my eyes out

From victim, to survivor, to advocate, to hero... thank you for summarizing the journey I'm trying to be achieve.

I think this is similar to how oda from one piece sets up his stories. He has you thinking it's a cute pirate kids in an adventure and boom the feels lol

I won't say that the complaint about superhero movies isn't without merit. They provide some escapism, and some do have lessons without being patronizing. Great realization with the prosthetic limbs. GotG is often criticized for being ableist because taking limbs is viewed as a joke, when it's really a character arc.

I love the ending scene of vol. 3 with the Song »Dog Days are over« so much! It sums up the journey so beautifully. And how happy and carefree Rocket is then. Thanks for this great episode about Rocket! 😊👍🏼

That Guy With the Thumbs

I have a different story that I think explains introducing another villain that we find out is the one really responsible for the death of Peter’s uncle. Rather than taking away from the first story, I posit that it is exactly what would happen in Spider-Man. Peter finally finds peace with something and thinks it is done with, only to find out later that if he still wants justice, he must jump over yet another hurdle. Hardly any story comes out with Peter on top. Poor guy has more bad luck than anybody.
