Alan:

Hello Heroes!

August! The kids went back to school. I worked a lot on a script. I read so many things.

What I’m reading!

Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. I bought the books from Brandon Sanderson’s record-breaking Kickstarter campaign (that he ran the exact same time as my Moonstruck campaign! The jerk!) and I’m finally getting around to reading them. I liked Tress. Charming. Felt like a spiritual successor to The Princess Bride and Stardust. Which, if you didn’t know, make a great double-feature.

The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England by Brandon Sanderson. A rare sci-fi book from Sanderson. Of course, because it’s Sanderson, the character stumbles into the one parallel universe in the multiverse that has actual magic in it. But the rest of the premise is very fun sci-fi, with a Jason Bourne-style amnesia plot thrown in. Also in first person, a rarity for Sanderson. It’s fun! Honestly, very much the kind of movie I’d like to make.

V for Vendetta by Alan Moore, drawn by David Lloyd. I haven’t ever read the graphic novel. And I gotta say, I actually think the movie is an improvement. There are a lot of side-bits that don’t add much to the story, and I’m really not a fan of the art style. It’s very early '80s but also quite muddy. I don’t really care for it. Still a masterpiece of feeling the oppression of a fascist regime. But I think the movie (and Andor, holy crap!) did it better.

A lot more that I don’t have time to write about. Mostly Hollywood insider stuff. What can I say, I’m obsessed with movies, and the people who make them.

What I’m watching!

Not a lot of movies this month that aren’t upcoming episodes. I’m trying to get out to see Gran Turismo and TMNT Mutant Mayhem this week, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Poker Face. It will shock you all to learn that a murder mystery show by Rian Johnson (Knives Out, Glass Onion, Brick) and Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll and a hundred other things) is really, really, REALLY good. Super-fun. Twisty. I love that it’s basically an anthology show, where the only character who carries over episode-to-episode is Lyonne’s lie-detecting Charlie. Can’t recommend highly enough. It’s almost worth getting Peacock for. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Better Off Ted. This was an under-appreciated gem in 2009-2010. Super-funny show that somehow is completely absurdist and totally nails corporate America. Which I guess tells you everything you need to know about corporate America.

The Afterparty S2 is still humming along. I don’t know if it’s not quite as good as S1, or if it just doesn’t feel like as big a magic trick, since they already did it once. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still spectacularly good. Just not… life-alteringly good?

What I’m playing!

A delightful little indie that came out in early release on Steam (PC & Mac! Yay!) called Thronefall. It’s a base-building RTS that’s really simple to control but deep and fun. And it’s only a few dollars! Strong recommend from me for the chill vibes paired with exciting action. I know that sounds impossible. But that’s what’s so great about Thronefall!

And…

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi all! Been a great month for enjoying things! I've been getting reacquainted with Psych, a show that always cheers me up and makes me laugh. Just started Monk, as well, so I guess I'm in a 2000s crime-solving comedy kind of mood. In theaters I recently caught Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Mission Impossible and loved all three for different reasons.I'm reading TIny Habits by BJ Fogg right now, about how to start small and consistent to create big change in your life. I'm also starting Brandon Mull's Fablehaven series with my kids, which is just delightful.

What have you been watching and reading this month?

Well, I’ve read maybe 8+ books this month? Lots of fantasy and romance books. I really enjoyed the ACOTAR series (A Court of Thorns and Roses) by Sarah J Maas and Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Watching? Well, I’m watching Ahsoka. I never watched the animated shows so it’s interesting hearing the discourse. I’m enjoying it. I’ve also seen TMNT (amazing animation and the voice acting is wonderful), Blue Beetle (fun romp from DCEU), and I made myself watch Nope. As I’m not a horror fan this wasn’t too scary and was definitely interesting. And Barbenheimer, of course. Ohs! And MI 7.1. It was fun! Inventive train sequence.

This month I've been reading Braiding Sweetgrass, a very nice popular science book about indigenous worldviews on plants, place, people and how they're interconnected through reciprocal relationships which gave me some hope for a sustainable future with our environment :) Also the Bookeaters - how love can make us monsters - and right now I'm reading Frugal Wizard! I like the light-hearted reading, and twist on modern people being wizards with technology being magic Sanderson uses here. I've been watching Good Omens season 2 and in a bit of a bind regarding what to watch next. Playing It Takes Two on the Switch with my partner, lovely coop game with cool different game mechanics every level :)

I haven’t been reading as much lately, maybe it’s all the games and movies. The other night, I watched Aladdin (2019) for the first time since theaters and it’s still fun but not as good as the original. Going to see Slotherhouse tonight, killer sloth in a sorority. The full Barbenheimer was my goal for National Cinema Day and it was accomplished! Also saw Blue Beetle (fun time), and The Wind Rises (one of my favorites) last week. There’s also No Hard Feelings, The Eight Mountains, and Dazed and Confused that I saw as well. It’s been a variety time for my film consumption. My gaming lately is a rotation of Marvel Snap, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XVI (Holdy moldy!), and Fall Guys. Diablo 4 fell off hard for me after the story was done.

Alan you are going to LOVE the next of Sanderson's books omgg it was one of the best things I've read!! Also Psych is a favorite of mine 😂 I just finished Yumi and the Nightmare Painter (as mentioned above, the next in Brandon Sanderson's Kickstarter series) and Family Business by Jonathan Sims who wrote the Magnus Archives.

Reilly Willoughby

Alan, I can't wait for you to get to Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. It's one of Brandon's best books.

Jono, we listened to Fablehaven in the car on a vacation roadtrip and it surprised me. The whole family really liked it. I'm reading and writing my first publishable book. Editting has begun on 80,000 words. By the end of the work day, I might be able to read a bit of the Dresden novel, Skin Games (book 15, I think?). I'm not always successful though. I did read Midnight at Blackbird Cafe by Heather Weber a couple of weeks back. It is a fantastic, easy read. It's a sweet story and just what I needed about then. We've been watching Only Murders in the Building S3 and Orville (again) on Hulu. I'm looking forward to the return of Wheel of Time on Amazon.

I was on a hiatus from reading but getting back into it this month with the dramatized adaptation of A Court of Silver Flames, as well as the dramatized adaptation of A Court of Frost and Starlight and the regular audiobook of A Court of Silver Flames, all by Sarah J Maas. I'm really enjoying the dramatized adaptations by Graphic Audio because of the production quality of the narrator, voices of all the different characters, sound effects, and music. It really helps me get immersed into the world. I think they also have done a few Brandon Sanderson books so Alan might enjoy them too!

April Peacock

I loved the Fablehaven series. Might need to dig it out and read it again.

Nancyjane Bailey

Jono, I have always loved Psych. I liked USA's "blue sky" shows: Psych, White Collar, Burn Notice, and Covert Affairs. (Royal Pains may fit in here, but I did not enjoy it quite as much as the aforementioned shows.) If you have not watched White Collar, check it out.

Kate Larson

Jono I love Monk!! I'd love to see you react to his psychological issues and maybe even how his therapist helps him. My mom and I have watched through it together 3 or 4 times and we just love it!!

Trying to tackle Stephen Kings Dark Tower series again, especially since I heard rumors of a future show. Been playing Outer Worlds and just finished watching One Piece. Which my husband and I were blown away with how good it was (we both love the anime) especially since we had the lowest expectations going into it.

Vikki Gray

Fablehaven! Next you need to read his following series DragonWatch!

Ever since seeing "Oppenheimer," I've been hoping to see an episode of it on YouTube, especially because Oppenheimer was...well, a real person. I guess this NYTimes article is the next best thing! ...will there be a "Therapist Reacts To Oppenheimer" at some point? A guy can dream!
